As we approach another trophyless season, I do feel that season 2007/08 should bring some drastic changes along with it. Of course, my opinion would sound far fetched, but that is my opinion anyway. It is all good and well giving the kids time to mature but we should also see that we have some quality not only on the pitch but the bench as well, as most of our rivals have, nowadays.
First of all, the subject of the managerial reigns...Arsene Wenger is a great manager, with a good eye for spotting talent, though on the flipside of things we have become another Ajax Amsterdam, moulding youngsters into stars, only to sell them off after a few years, without really given a real break in the Arsenal first team.
I just feel Wenger should take up a job at the club as a Sports Director and handle the managerial side of things to someone new, someone with a fresh approach to things, especially from a tactical point of view, as we can't defend to save our lives, especially at set pieces...it has become actually very painful to watch when we concede corners or free kicks in and around the box...one always expects the worst. Unlike in the days of Adams, Bould, O’Leary, Keown and co. , where the opposition would have to work their socks off just to get by the centre backs.
Secondly, the likes of Aliadiere and Baptista, should be allowed to leave and returned, respectively. The amount of time Wenger has spent giving the likes of Aliadiere, who clearly has shown he is not up to scratch when it comes down to playing in the Premier League, yet he has been around at Arsenal since he was 16 and never really made a real impact.
Taking Julio Baptista on loan was another error in judgement, this guy is anything but a "BEAST" as he was known in Spain, he gets bumped off the ball all to often and his shooting is disastrous and that is just being kind! I find his decision making at times baffling and sometimes the areas where he decides to shoot is also very questionable.
I think with Nicklas Bendtner returning from his season long loan spell at Birmingham, then also adding some decent firepower up front, with the likes of Klaas Jan Huntelaar from Ajax and perhaps someone like Fernando Torres from Athletico Madrid, we can finally have some true goal poachers in the Arsenal ranks for the new season.
When one thinks how, our boys have been struggling without Henry, Van Persie and Adebayor (bagging the goals), attempting to depend on Baptista, Walcott and Aliadiere on getting us the goals, that clearly was wishful thinking. Of course Walcott has time but Aliadiere and Baptista have in the past months moaned of not getting a decent chance in the squad, now we have a pile up of injuries/suspensions to our strikeforce, they get their much awaited chance and now these two look anything but true goal getters.
As an Arsenal fan it is a bitter pill to swallow, watching the midweek Champions League minus Arsenal or the odd weekend with the FA Cup, again, minus the Arsenal! Though it is now the case of biting the bullet, seeing that we consolidate our Champions League position, win our game in hand, stuff Pool over the weekend and have some breathing space between us and the Scousers and hope somewhere down the line Chelsea slip up as well.
