Eagerly counting the days down until the end of the season, as much as Wenger is denying bringing in any new faces, I am sure most of us have, in the back of our minds, conjured up a transfer list of ones own for the coming season.
Reading about Baptista, who is eager to return to Spain, thankfully my prayers have been answered, now the only problem is, sorting out the 'small' problem with a senor Jose´Antonio Reyes. Once a fee can FINALLY be settled on we can finally move on. We seem to always get the short end of deals when selling off players, remember how long it took, Real to pay up when they bought Anelka and Juve with Patrick Vieira?
The current rumour bouncing around here in Germany is that Arsenal are interested in German international left back, Marcell Jansen, who is currently under contract with struggling Bundesliga team, Borussia Monchengladbach until 2008. Though he does have a clause in his contract, should they be relegated, which seems just about done and dusted, he could move as a free agent. He would be a good addition, a left back who is 6ft 3in, could come in quite handy, added to that, he can cross! The other left back rumoured to have Wenger’s interest is, Lyon’s Eric Abidal
Then the one who has been tipped by most Arsenal sites, Franck Ribery, a player who has a very direct approach, unlike Hleb who tends to slow the pace of a game, when urgency is needed. Even though Niklas Bendtner returns from his loan spell, Arsenal still would need another striker, possibly a genuine goal poacher, a David Villa or Fernando Torres wouldn’t be bad, though ofcourse, would be priced out of our range, though just up Chelski’s alley.
A player who has caught my eye, not a big name and I am sure not a massive price tag, would be David Nugent from Championship side, Preston North End, he seems to have the real appetite for goal and who knows if Wenger feels like bringing in more English talent, I don’t think he would go wrong with Nugent.
In the goalkeeping department, with Lehmann surely looking as if he will stay on another season, it also would not be bad for Wenger having a keeper lined up for the season after next. Though there are a good few around, in my opinion, Buffon would be ideal(though again...expensive), he seems calm in most situations, looks solid in one on one situations and seems unflappable in the air and I rate him alongside Petr Cech as the best in the world.
Once again in the various tabloids, it seems some would want to stir up chaos, after David Dein, decided to call it a day. All of a sudden, THE SUN mentions, Wenger will leave, our big names will leave, then again like most stories, just another cooked up one. Listening to Peter Hill-Wood on Arsenal TV, he seems unfazed by the rumours and has stated that should Wenger need funds in the summer there will be a hefty transfer kitty for him to make signings, no reason to go into panic.
After this weekend’s North London Derby, it is then just 4 more games of this torrid season, the players can then hopefully nurse whatever niggles. The likes of Henry, Walcott and Van Persie can come back next season, even stronger and added to that, hopefully Arsene, bolsters our squad (with a few new players) adequately to tackle the new season.
