As the international week has well and truly taken over, I thought I would turn my attentions to our squad options and one position in particular.

Arsene Wenger has assembled a squad brimming with attacking quality from the experience of Andrey Arshavin to the youthful exuberance of 18 year old Jack Wilshere. Even with the usual growing list of players in the treatment room, Arsene must still be scratching his head during his training sessions, wondering about which group of players he will select come the match day, at least in the offensive part of the pitch.

When Robert Pires decided his future should be elsewhere, Arsene acted quickly. In May 2006 Arsenal swooped to seal the services of Czech play maker Tomas Rosicky who was plying his trade in Germany for Borussia Dortmund. The German club had broke the transfer record for Rosicky in 2001, spending €14.5 million for his services. Arsenal being Arsenal managed to secure the deal for roughly £6 million, an absolute steal.

He went on to star at the 2006 world cup, his biggest highlight was probably scoring two wonderful goals against USA which would have left many a club envious of Arsenal's early business.

In season 2008/2009 Arsene Wenger was hit with an abundance of injuries to attacking players, we had dropped out of the title race and our fourth place spot in the league was under threat from the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham. When the January transfer window opened, Arsene entered the market for a creative play maker to add some quality to the squad. Andrey Arshavin lit up the 2008 European Championships and was chased by a number of top European clubs, none of which managed to acquire his signature. His club Zenit St Petersburg had placed a price tag on his head that was clearly to heavy for other clubs to lift.

In January it was a different story. Cash wasn't as freely available to clubs and Arsenal were pretty much left alone to negotiate with Arshavin's club. It went right down to the wire and Arshavin eventually became a Gooner, signing for an Arsenal record fee of £15 million.

This season Andrey Arshavin is first choice on the left side of our front three, at least so far. We haven't as yet had every single member of our attack fit at the same time but as it stands the Russian is a starter. Tomas Rosicky has produced his best football in a number of years, this is the first time he has come through a pre season and remained pretty much fit and the results are showing on the pitch.

Arshavin remains an enigma, produces the goods in the last third of pitch only a few times a game but when he gets it right, it often leads to an assist or a goal. Andrey Arshavin is our top goal scorer with 5 goals in 10 games yet he finds himself on the periphery of the game time and time again. You would be forgiven for thinking that we were a man down at times when our passing game hasn't clicked and we are not dominating the ball. Often our number 23 gives the ball away with a sloppy pass and it also seems as if he decides when he feels like working back to win the ball, yet in games where it is tight and a goal is needed as in our recent defeat at the hands of Chelsea, his absence from the game becomes apparent.

It is difficult for Arsene to remove Arshavin from tight matches as he knows one little movement in between a full back and central defender followed by a slid ball or a snap shot from the edge of the box could yield goal scoring results.

It must be said though, that although Arshavin does not often grab the game by the proverbial scruff of the neck, he has increased his work rate off the ball when we are not in possession. It is not as consistent as some of our other players in that position but it is an improvement of last season.

Tomas Rosicky appears to be the polar opposite to Arshavin. He has flown out of the traps this season, recapturing some of his earlier Arsenal form. Often playing in his natural central attacking role, he has shone. Orchestrating the play as only Mozart can do. Launching into 50-50's, threading through eye of the needle passes. Rosicky has found himself on the right side of the front three at times this season and has done the job well yet you feel that when Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri are both available then he may struggle to earn that spot in the team.

The one major positive about Rosicky is that he makes others play. When Nasri and Rosicky are on the field together, they swap positions and keep the ball so well and make the opposition chase shadows. Last season against Porto at the Emirates those two produced one of the most fluid interchanging performances that I have ever seen, we have seen it in glimpses this year also. The more they play, the better they will become.

I would like to see how the team perform with Rosicky, Nasri, Cesc and perhaps Wilshere playing ten games together, all on top of their game. Our football could really go up another level with those players all passing and moving, exchanging positions and supporting the front man.

What Rosicky does not have that Arshavin has is the movement to get into forward, goal scoring positions. As well as the ruthlessness to put chances away once they come his way. Playing in the front three, Arshavin's eye for goal is vital but at the same time this is a catch-22 as you lose a bit of midfield domination, a bit of possession and that extra ball winning ability with Rosicky in the side can be converted into goals a different way over the course of the season.

Ultimately all the players will get plenty of games, especially with our incredible rotating injury problem we have had over the last few years but in the big games when it really counts, with all of Wenger's options available which of the two benefit Arsenal the most?

Its a good question. Who should start? Andrey is as unpredictable as they get, you never know whats in store when he plays. If it comes off and it does quite often, then his moment of brilliance can swing the match in our favour. When it doesn't he comes across as a lazy bum and his lack of defensive effort affects Clichy's play as well.
With TR7 you know you'll get a hardworking performance, technical brilliance and mindblowing creativity. In this team only Cesc can rival him in his passing range at this point in time. But for a man whose most memorable goals are from range he shoots a lot less. If he can add that bit of a goal threat then he beats Andrey hands down. But as of now Arshavin has got the goals scored column in his favour and added to his assists he should get the nod. AA23 it is for me.

rosickys a brilliant player to watch but i just think hes better now against teams that we will have all the possesion against. eg blackpool. Arshavins the second best player at the club even when he plays badly in terms of linking up and wayward passes when you look at hes figures its amazing. he gets assists and goals like only he can. he can score out of nothing. he dribbles past players like their not there and hes got the pace to run in behind. hes on another level to the others and he knows that and thats why he seems lazy.

Arshavin is lazy gives the ball away doesnt track back and we basically have 10 men on the pitch when he plays, but then there are those games where he is amazing and wins it for us. However when was the last time Arshavin won us a game? Rosicky works hard is a better passer of the ball and when playing with Nasri gives us a Xavi-Iniesta effect. If Rosicky starts scoring goals again then there is no debate he has to start.

My view cannot be trusted. I was raving about Rosicky after the Blackpool and Liverpool displays and recently I was raving about Arshavin away to Partizan, then when Rosicky came on against Chelsea he did more in his brief appearance on the filed than Arshavin did.

Arshavin's stats speak for themselves but at present I think I would go for Rosicky's work and combination play and then hope he can start to produce the goods in the final third as Arshavin does so regularly

    Hi ML!

    Interesting post as always!

The issue of Rosicky and Nasri playing as wingers is one which frustrates me no end.

Both Rosicky and Nasri are central attacking midfielders. They are not wingers. Their talent, as you point out, is in threading through eye of the needle passes. Their off the ball attacking runs are simply not good enough to justify playing either of them in wide positions.

Arshavin like Walcott are actually natural strikers. They instinctally make off the ball attacking runs which put them in goal scoring positions. Those runs are fundamental to Arsenal's attacking play. A lack of direct penetration from wide areas significantly attracts from Arsenal's attacking prowess. It is for this reason I think that Arshavin (despite his occassional laziness), Walcott or Vela are much more effective as a wingers than the likes of Nasri or Rosicky.

Speaking about all things wingers, I would also like to see Vela, being a left footer, play on the right side of the front three and Walcott (being a right footed player) switch to the left. I think this would increase their chances of scoring as it would create a more beneficial angle to allow them to curl shots to the back post as well as generate more power when going for the near post.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts?

i don't think we can afford to leave arshavin on the bench. rosicky has been doing very well this season, but i would argue that some of his best displays have come when he is used as a sub.
arshavin's work rate isn't as bad as many think, and is our greatest goal threat at the moment, and a good consistent crosser and that is especially important for chamakh. leaving him out equals at least a goal or assist less a game, look at the guys numbers.
rosicky is actually competing with wilshere for a spot, i believe.
i do love little mozart, he can shoot, pass, create plays, is great at slide tackles and is all heart, it would be great to have him more on the pitch.

Good point waterboy, roz isnt a wide man. So for me if its out on the left i would play shava and if its the centre of the park its got to be roz. As you say ml arsh is our top scorer with 5 goals so what kind of madness would it be to leave out your top scorer on the account of being lazy/gready/frustraiting. If the question was who do i like more, well thats easy, tom anyday of the week but unfortunately it doesnt mean (lean) he gets to start.

Arshavin is a player who may be quiet in a game but does what is required and provides shedloads of assists and goals. As long as he is as effective as a Messi, does it really matter whether he is dominating the game? After all, we dominate against Chelsea regularly but who has won regularly in the last 5 years?

Its never AA vs TR coz both players deserv to start. Its is more TR vs Diaby or Nasri or Wilshere.

Yep, I am sticking to my view that Rosicky should start. Arshavin was truly woeful against Birmingham.

If he is a match winner then we should bring him on if we are not winning late on. He needs to prove himself once again and not just get picked because he is Arshavin.

Well, MeanLean came right out and said why he posted this blog. He likes Rosicky. He wants Rosicky to do well. He wants Rosicky.

Which is fair enough. Folks can like Rosicky. I think he is a nice looking bloke myself.

But Arshavin has the stats, he is the captain of Russia for a very good reason, he scares the christ out of opposition defenders, and .... oh yeah, he has the stats.

Rosicky is a nice guy who some guys seem to like a lot.

And that's great, like I said.

But he doesn't have the stats. He isn't captain of very much at all. And why would anybody be scared of Rosicky? Because his hair might look good while he passes the ball to a team mate?

Let's be real. Rosicky has not been playing the hard games, and even then he has not been scoring either assists or goals. Arshavin has been playing the hard games, and he has been scoring the assists and goals.

If you are for real, and you care about the results, this is an emotional and wistful blog entry by meanlean.

Arsenal need more players with Arshavin's technical skill and killer instinct. Arsenal do not need more players the fans like to like.
