The date is Saturday 13th August 2011. It is the launch of the 2010/11 Premiership season. It has been many days since the last league game was played. A lot has happened during this time.
For over two months clubs around the world have spent their time explaining, talking, fighting and negotiating. They have sent representatives to the far corners of the globe in an effort to discover what others have found less than a mile from their doorstep. And they have done all this so that when the time comes they have the best chance of realising their dreams.
Their dreams and those of thousands upon thousands of fans.
But as the first game approaches this explaining, talking, fighting and negotiating can no longer help. What has happened before and what will happen after must be forgotten or ignored. For ninety minutes all that matters is what happens on the pitch. This is the reality.
It is now twenty minutes to kick off at St. James’ Park. The Arsenal squad have made their way to the away dressing room and are preparing themselves mentally.
The morning has been dominated by talk of just two people – Francesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
Columns, bulletins, reports, previews, analysis, questions, answers. News rooms and television studios are haunted by the presence of their absence. Upstairs in the stadium ex-players and ‘experts’ survey the arena, discussing what they cannot and will not see. The two who are not there.
But down below, way beneath their feet, eleven far more important individuals lay waiting. Eleven chosen men who know in their hearts that after all the explaining, talking, fighting and negotiating the dreams and ambitions of the thousands upon thousands now rest in their hands. Who they are not and where they have been makes little difference now.
It is who they are where they are going that matters.
As the last of the selected pulls the red and white over their heads they look to the heavens and beat the crest with their hand. Underneath their heart pumps pure courage and adrenaline. They are ready.
Around the world, the thousands upon thousands wait with baited breath. They too feel the absence of the two. It is understandable. They have thought of little else for far too long.
But those thoughts cannot continue. They mustn’t. Those who are not there no longer matter. Those who are not there have not pulled on the red and white, they have not looked to the heavens and they no longer beat the crest the thousands cherish.
Thoughts instead must turn to those that do. If the eleven chosen men are to succeed they need to know the thousands think only of them. When the whistle sounds and the battle commences it is their actions that will make a difference. It is their actions which can bring the dream a little closer. It is they that need support.
When kings depart new kings emerge and we are Royal Arsenal. The eleven chosen men are not just men but princes; princes with the power to rise up and claim the crown.
But the long journey to the throne begins with a single step. And that step takes place today - Saturday 13th August 2011.
So let us not think of the past, but of the present and the future, as we sing our hearts out for the princes who fight for us.
We are Arsenal till we die. But Arsenal will always live on.

So farewell Francesc Fabregas,
you gobbed at Ballack, slung pizza at OT, played some great stuff, got the captains armband, signed a lengthy contract, sulked like a little boy, became the Nou Camp backheel maestro, and you threw it all in, just to pick up haemhorroids on the Barca bench.
Ciao amigo, nos vemos,

Royalty? LOL Maybe once, but no longer. No significant moves to address the obvious problems at the back in the transfer market once again. Failure to address a need year after year are something you expect from a mid table club..
Arsenal will be lucky to claim a CL spot for next year. For that matter, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Udinese knock them off this year.
It's a shame to see a once proud club sink, and with a cheapskate like Kroenke the future looks bleak..

It is the team that matters in the end. Individual star players come and go, but he team goes on. This season could turn out to be a lot better than many fans dread. If the team shows greater defensive resolution and more consistent effort and application in difficult times success will follow.

Awesome, awesome post. So what if they go... let them, the club grows and will forever grow, because we invested in the future rather than 2nd hand Bentleys.

Unbeliveable mis-management by Wenger.Cesc and Nasri should have been sold 3 months ago and replacements brought in.But one day before the season starts no replacements
Yes there will always be an Arsenal but they will not be top 4 Arsenal. And the blame for that falls at the door of penny-pinching Wenger
And where is the CB signing?

Nice work WB. My sentiments exactly.
I have been fretting about the future of Cesc in the past because I wanted him to stay, I wanted him to be around but now that I know he is going, why waste my energies on it?
The players that pull on the shirt on the weekend are the players that I will be supporting, they will be the ones to whom I watch their movement, their passing, their tackling.
People keep trotting out the line, this is not 'Arsene FC' well this is certainly not Cesc FC or indeed Nasri FC.
I am looking forward to watching Theo and Gervinho running off Van Persie. I am looking forward to see one of our youngsters come off the bench when the game is hopefully won.
Our squad is not yet finished but there is already plenty to get excited about.

Jack, Ramsey, Van Persie, Szczesny, Vermaelen, Ryo
Why pick such contentious players and ignore our brightest talents?
-

Because Arsenal do not have anything positive about them at all whilst everyone else does. Apparently.

RVP and I couldn't think of a better man see his comments from earlier this summer about how he came to Arsenal to win trophies at Arsenal and that is what he fully intends to do

So trying to keep hold of your best player is mis-management? So he's given up on keeping Cesc a day before our first game Cesc is injured anyway. Wenger made a judgment on Bartley in pre-season and loaned him to Rangers I expect a centre back by the end of the window either when the Boss finds a suitable player or Everton/Bolton drop their ridiculous valuations
-
12-Aug-2011 18:14 | | Podge
I assume RVP Sagna Song or Vermaelen you know the remaining world class players in our team

All the best to Cesc a player Arsenal turned from a mediocre youngster into a world class superstar. I'm sure he is grateful and the chance to play for your boyhood team is a a serious lure and it's perfectly logical that Barcelona deserve him at a lower price because of that he grew up supporting them after all. They spoke constantly about how much they wanted him in the correct manner you know by saying to every tabloid and disrupting the player for 3 years. And they clearly do want him that's why they are asking him to take a pay cut and wave his loyalty bonus.
I know that sounds like I'm angry at Cesc but I'm not he is a model pro(even if he never bothered to research how to solve his hamstring issues like Ryan Giggs did) and he never spoke ill of Arsenal he will wish us the best on his farewell and he has been honest(kinda). He must really want to play for Barca and it isn't about the money clearly.
My only problem with Cesc is that he know he wasn't going to stay he should have put in a transfer request early in the summer and got it sorted then by not doing that he gave Wenger hope that he would stay and has made the boss look a fool to his critics.
Cesc all the best you will be missed hopefully not too much as your replacement takes us higher than you could.
Barcelona you vile cunts, for all the beautiful football and amazing success, the way you you conduct your transfer business is a fucking disgrace.Using a young man's emotions to save money and undermining another club with millions of fans, blatant disregard for FIFA and UEFA rules and your general sense of entitlement stops you from ever being the greatest team in history as great teams act fairly on and off the pitch. They don't try to get opponents sent off at every opportunity and field a player who is on HGH although that last part is admittedly speculation
