Third game of the new season and we come out with a defeat. A 2-0 defeat wasn't what the doctor ordered but still we lost all 3 points at The Emirates. Last season our home games were poor to say the least and we have started in similar fashion with a poor result.

We started very slowly, Liverpool dominated, their double pivot of Charlie Adam and Lucas Levia over shadowed our midfield early on. We grew in confidence as the game wore on but we still lacked that cutting edge in midfield which eventually isolated our attack.

A lot of factors in my opinion led to our lack of creativity in the middle of the pack.

1. Wenger didn't get the balance right in midfield. A Frimpong, Nasri and Ramsey would never work. Apart from Frimpong we were left with no other ball winner - Nasri and Ramsey are far from ball winners or even defensively sound leading to us being over run and reducing our creativity because we couldn't win the ball on time but on the other hand we played with what we had. In my last write-up I said a 4-4-1-1 formation would work and with Nasri playing, it would have pushed Arshavin who was poor to the bench. Bendtner or Chamakh should have started which would have given RVP license to roam and increase our numbers in midfield.

2. RVP failed to drop off there by increasing our numbers in midfield, dragging opposition defenders out of position and freeing up space for Arshavin and Walcott to exploit. Also the lack of movement from RVP also restricted in field movement of Walcott. Walcott is never at his best when he is crowded on the bye-line. Enrique, Downing and Adam doubled up on him all game.

3. The pace of passing looks very laboured. We tend to dwell on the ball for long instead of making a quick pass and running into a freed up space.

4. We still aren't closing down our opposition and against Liverpool we failed to do that. We allowed Liverpool have so much time on the ball which led to them dictating the tempo of the game.

We played into Liverpool's hands. Flanagan and Enrique were largely untroubled, Carraghar and Aggar dominated RVP from start to finish. Our only source of inspiration going forward was from the departing Nasri. His skills and nifty foot work created openings for him but still it wasn't  enough for him and the team

Frimpong's red card was a deserved sending off, his inexperience showed  which in turn gifted Liverpool all 3 points. Before the red card, we started seeing more of the ball, I was hoping we would see the introduction of Ryo for the ineffective Arshavin. Arshavin for me has gone backwards, really do not know what has happened to him. His first 6months in the Arsenal jersey was nothing short of awesome but seeing his footballing play yesterday was depressing.

The positives from the game was our back four and Frimpong. Vermaelen was gold on the day, Caroll didn't get a sniff. Vermaelen won everything on ground and in the air, its a real shame we didn't get to keep a clean sheet on that kind of performance.  Miquel was very impressive and he was very unlucky that his clearance hit Ramsey and went in to give Liverpool the lead. Jenkinson was impressive too while Sagna was Sagna. Frimpong was very sound, he started nervously but grew into  game has the game wore on. The only downer was the red card, hopefully he learns from it like Wilshere did when he was red carded against Bolton at home last season.

All in all, we must move on, we have Udinese on Wednesday and we must come out of it with a result, then we go to Old Trafford on Sunday.

We go into the UTD game without a Defensive Midfielder in sight. Song and Frimpong suspended, Denilson on loan hopefully Wenger gets one before Friday. M'Vila is being talked about in the media and on Saturdays reports were flying around that Rennes rejected a €20m bid from us. Question now is are we going increase our offer or is M'Vila going to force a move out of the club. Only time would tell and as it stands we don't have time on our hands.

If you had read it properly I said Wenger played with what we had but he also had the choice of playin' a 4-4-1-1 formation. On the Kelly and Flamagan mix-up, I'm sorry I made that mistake, I only pay attention on our club and who we field and not the opposition.

The best option for the board to remove Wenger without losing face, would be to move him sideways into another role at the club. Youth coach would be the most suitable. That way the realists get a new manager with fresh ideas, a new approach and who does not neglect his responsibilities.
And the A.K.B.’s are spared the trauma of seeing their beloved poster boy humiliated.
It’s then a win-win situation for both parties. The alternative is that the board do nothing, the season goes from bad to worse, and pressure from the fans sees Wenger ( rightfully ) kicked out before January.

Considering we have to play Udinese (AWAY) to ensure we qualify for the Champions League is a big worry. We saw how good they were away from home, imagine them on their turf.

For that match I guess we are forced for a line up similar to this:

    ----------------------------Szczesny--------------------------
    Jenkinson----Vermaelen----Koscielny-----Sagna
    ----------------------Song--------Frimpong----------------
    ----------------------------van Persie------------------------
    Gervinho--------------------------------------------Walcott
    ----------------------------Chamakh-------------------------

Around the 60th minute bring on the following, if we are in a good position to qualify:

Arshavin for van Persie (Give him a chance in his natural position)
    Chamberlain or Miyaichi for Walcott
Afobe or Campbell for Chamakh (80th minute).

Against United, if Djourou is fit I would play him in the Song role with Lansbury replacing Frimpong and Arshavin coming in for Gervinho. If Djourou isn't fit then it'll have to be Ramsey and Lansbury in the deep midfield roles.

The squad only needs 4-5 players for it to be one of the strongest in the league.

    Szczesny, Fabianski and Mannone

Sagna, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Koscielny, (BUY Cahill £17 mill), Djourou, Miquel, Gibbs and Traore

Song, Frimpong, (BUY M'Vila around £17 mill or Biglia £8mill), Wilshere, Ramsey, Lansbury, Rosicky, Diaby and (BUY Montolivo £11 mill)

Walcott, Gervinho, Chamberlain, Miyaichi, (BUY Hazard £24 mill), Arshavin

van Persie, (BUY Sow £15), Chamakh (EVEN though I prefer Bendtner), Afobe, Campbell

I hope Wenger does strengthen the team. It would be heart breaking to see a man put together a team of players who could be beaten in an entire season in the past but not be able to do it now.

Wenger says he wont quit. If results go against him and he doesn't take the necessary action to prevent a free fall,he could be axed.
The ball is at his feet. Whether he stays is up to him.Failure to get the experienced guys is a sure sign he has gone crazy and he should be sacked.

It looks to me like the players are out on their feet before a ball is kicked. The club needs a couple of big signings to kick start the team. You can't lose 3 regular first teamers without replacing them. We were at least 3 short last year, so realistically we are are now probably 4 short.

Arsenal lie to us as well. Where is all the "business done early" or the "working hard on transfers" They treat us fans shockingly bad at arsenal. There must be something going on behind the scenes, because surly wenger wouldn't let things carry on like this.... Would he..?

Arsenal and talking. Since you guyz can't shoot anymore, prolly change ur logo with the 'Bad Boy Records' logo.

Wenger and the Board understand but why the money aint forthcoming beats everyone.

Frimpong was my man of the match. But with him in or out, Liverpool had a goal coming (Luis 'El-Pistol' Suarez)...

Someone said we had to wait for a 19year old to get a red card before we scored. *smb* Did Liverpool beg Wenger to go easy on us? *hiss*

Make the right signings and save yourselves the long story.

As for Andy Carroll? I'm tired. I'd prefer a £50m Torres than a free Carroll any day.

That's because Wenger is the root cause of our problems. Him, and the weak board who are in deference to him.
On the match - Sczesney and Vermaelen were the best performers. At least we made an effort. But it's clear we are going to miss Fabregas. We lacked creativity ( again ), and hardly looked a threat. I was surprised that Dalglish preferred to start with Carroll instead of Suarez. Just as well for us that Suarez came on later, or I think we could have lost by more. Wenger looked at Suarez last season, but settled on Chamakh. One cost 22 million. The other was free. Which do you think yields the better value return ?
Still wanting a wager at Betfair ? You might still get that 14.5 /1 on offer before it blows out even further after Saturday's indifferent display.

  • Den  - Why money not available
    avatar
Because our owner has decided no big money being spent till after wednesday's result. If we lose they won't sanction a y more spending. I think Arsene has lost the control he had prior to Stan why else did he openly challenge the bord with his statement that Cesc and Nasri were going nowhere.
  • dkgooner  - he didn't say that
    avatar
He didn't say they weren't going anywhere. He was asked if he EXPECTED them to leave and he replied, with a wry smile, that he didn't EXPECT any player to leave the club. Just a little banter with the press which he enjoys so much. Humour is lost on some people.
Not sure he'll be so humorous again this season. It's looking like a long one. Even with Szczesny, Vermaelen, Jenkinson and Frimpong all looking the part, the squad is disastrously thin on experience and solid players who can last a season.
And no, I don't understand either why he thinks he has 4 good CBs when one is very injury prone and another is patently fckng useless. Plus he is relying on a left back who can never play more than 3 or 4 games on the trot without then being out for two months. And the most over-rated, over-hyped lump of dog-turd on the right wing.
Yes, we have players to come back and I believe we can get a result in Italy (one away goal means they need three) but if we go out of the CL at this stage, it's going to be hard to get the team spirit revived.
Agree with Alfie about the "business done early hype" - we never have done, so why change the habits of a lifetime just because the supporters need some encouragement to get behind the team?
I'm sure they think it's all our fault. I've been a staunch supporter of AW but if there is no new blood before the end of the transfer window, then God help us - and him.

    avatar
    Hi all,

I'm a newbie here, since English is not my 1st language, so please pardon me for my bad english :)

After saw 2 Arsenal's performances (I couldn't watch the CL coz in my place that match played at 3 AM), I thought we already had a very good defense, with Szczesny as our no 1, plus Verm and Koz, we have a solid defense... At the midfielder we already had Wilshere, Frimpong, we only lack of creative midfielder.. the one that supposed to fill the hole that leaved by our no 4, please instead of buy a new midfielder... please allocate the money "to buy" NASRI, we know if only we offer Nasri a better contract he'll stay, so instead of take another gamble to buy a new player, better to spend the money to increase his wage, then we could buy a striker, IMHO RVP isn't no 9 that we need, better for RVP to play at walcott position, while at left we have Gervinho :) Thank you

So a quick one from me, and it's still about that boi Cesc- Nasri doesn't matter to me to be honest, neat foot play and all that and didn't make one thru pass al game is a weist of effort... If we don't find a replacement for Cesc or hope JW doesn't have a Vermaelen-like injury, I think we are in for a long season.. Goals have dried up for this team, shots on goals have dried up for this team, and all this began to show, since Cesc stopped playing for the team: towards the end of last season..
And Mr Spectrum, pls tell me one manager that can come in and do a job like Wenger has done, instead of making noise of sacking Wenger.. Get a good replacement currently available, if not, think u can take the back seat...

We could do with a little less analysis and a bit more support. It's not as if anything said here or anywhere else will influence anyone at the club. If you're really unhappy you can instead protest by withdrawing your support by not going to games and not buying merchandise.

And a final thought..Even RVP, Wishere and a few others (who are actually players at the club and are obviously in the mix of all this mess) are crying out for signings.who are you to say we dont have money.Dont the other players know this?Or are you Wenger's Diary keeper?

well if that article is true, it would explain quite a lot, makes perfect sense. wenger would be the fall guy and a new manager would come in and actually buy those average players like cahill and keeping the board happy. but it won't work, the fans are already pissed off.
  • richie  - Muk the Riddler?
    avatar
No Muk there's life after Arsene! We all know Arsenal will go on, but unless people can come up with a realistic name as a replacement for those of us on this blog to discuss and debate then its pointless to slag off our current manager. Too many fools on here think it cool to diss our own, while our rivals laugh at our fickle supporters.

Everyone knows the pool have great supporters, and that never slag their own. Manu'er supporters wave different colour scarves as a protest against their board, but they never wash their linen in public, you won't here them slag off their own. Next up the Tiny Totts are all laughing at us, having the cheek to ask why can't we buy ourselves some support if not new players? Its pathetic what passes as our support nowdays.I ashamed!

I support Arsenal 1st and I'll support whoever our manager is until they are no longer our manager. Then I'll support the next manager even if I don't agree with everything they do. For me supporting a club is about standing up for your club against your rivals. I can't sit still in a pub if a group of rival fans are slagging off my club, I'll probably end up nicked (it won't be a 1st) but if I sat still listening to others slag off my club I wouln't consider myself a supporter.
  • richie  - I never quote Journo's even when you clain I did

But the gist of the footballnet storey was said by Liam Brady on RTE TV
he claimed several tranfers had fallen through even though tranfer fees were agreed between clubs because the board wouldn't sanction the personal terms. You have to ask the question why Liam Brady would lie about something like that.
  • Man United Killa  - Richie the Lost?
    avatar
    Richie,
I don't follow why you keep going on about people slagging off their own.I am discussing my concerns on an Arsenal Supporter's website. It's unfortunate that there is no door that we can shut on here so we can do this behind closed doors.Talking about Man U not washing their dirty linen in public? Do you remember what went on when Fergie compounded almost 5 years without a trophy? or were you too young at that time?As it stands Man U supporters have little to complain about.Their club is showing intent and ambition for starters.I wish I could say the same for us.I love my Arsenal that is why I am so unhappy about the way things are going.Things have to change.
And if it is any consolation, I have had my fair share of encounters (both close and actual encounters) with people who want to drag my Arsenal through the mud.Take this analogy..If you go out with your wife and she does the unthinkable, you have to stand behind her but in the room, alone with her you need to set the record straight..that is pretty how a love story goes.Anyone who truly loves something does this automatically for most part.
Final word..answer this question honestly Richie..Do you think this squad is capable of winning the EPL or the Champions League?Be honest!
  • Man United Killa
    avatar
Then you would have to ask the question why players would openly declare that the manger needs to sign when they obviously know the funds are not available to sanction their wages.I am sure the players care more about the financial stability of the club more than you do.These people need to get paid!
  • richie  - Honestly
    avatar
As things stand at the moment absolutly not! But then again I ain't thought we could win the EPL since the last time we had a proper center half in our team (Sol first time round). And yet we put ourselves in a dam good position to do exactly that last season, and if we'd of had a forceful character in the dressing room and someone with a winning personality on the pitch to drag the youngsters on we might've done it. So what do I know!
  • richie  - They get paid no matter its sown up
    avatar
Muk seriously do you know any players? I do! Most couldn't find their own arse's with both hands. Never mind knowing whats going on between the board and the manager. They know more about their play stations than their own clubs. The play football thats what they know.

If true, then its time that Arsene and the board moved with the times then. The self-sustaining model may have worked in the past, but its changed times with billionaires splashing the cash for top players and top teams and bigger wages (and winning trophies) If we want to stay in mediocrity then the status quo will deliver f*** all trophy wise and no CL. Some of you AKBs seem to be happy with the board staying financially sound at the expense of garbage on the pitch with nearly an under 21 team and reserves. Arsenes FFP goal has proved to be a joke as Citeh has proved, and all the big teams will find ways round it. The board are greedy b******* and Arsene has gone along with it all along. We lost to l'pool because we could hold the ball for even 30 second and we gave them too much space to operate, We only had one ball winner and when he naively received a red card we eventually lost the midfield battle.

The fact is that, since 2007 Wenger has never gotten it right with his stingy, inelastic, selfish and antiquated transfer market policy. If we cast our minds back to last season we could clearly see that a quality CB in in the person of Cahill or someone better than squillaci could have secured a trophy for us but Wenger's blatant arrogance and some stingy ideology led us to another trophiless season. How do you expect a club that has spent a little over 66m in yrs to compete with spending clubs like Man u, Barca, Chelsea, City etc.?

He clearly understands the level of Quality three world class players would add to our current squad, but he is not prepared to buy even at 20m. Instead he would go for low profile, cheap, naive and inexperienced youngsters so that at the end of the season he would come out with the usual excuse that he has a very young team.

Looking at the current trend of transfer fees we can say that spending an average of 15m to 20m on a quality player is not that expensive especially in the premiership where the so called big clubs are spending 30m to 50m for one quality player.

Please lets not blame Cesc or any other who player who presents a transfer request, because wenger is not ready to win and the ultimate aim of every player is to win trophies and not play only good football. If nothing is done to prevent Wenger from stopping this stupid ideology, we would go trophiless even in eternity and we would even see our few the home grown stars leaving us at the end of every season.

Our trophiless problem can only be rectified if Wenger and the normative minded board is ready to spend an average of 30m to 40m on 2 or 3 quality players every season. We can spend 20m in August and either 10m or 15m could be used to purchase a cover up player in the January transfer period.

hahaha..Wenger is right about what?Dude, can you even read???Who are you to sit here and say the easiest thing to do is to sign players and keep winning when your manager says otherwise? Do you know how much Wenger signed squillaci for?Do you know how much he signed Chamberlain for? What are you talking about? We sign a bunch of kids for substantial prices for most part, and give them fat wages and when they grow up they leave anyways. This is a true indication of what a selling club is.Is this what they have turned Arsenal to?Get your thinking cap on (if you have half a brain) before you sit behind your keyboard and type rubbish.
Wenger has an agenda that is not working.Only half wits like you will buy into his ideas.Whoever is making the call,I dont really care.Wenger is at the forefront of it all.Who will you freaking blame when the economy is down, the barber whose shop is on the corner of 10th street or your freaking president? This is madness.
Analyze this.Fabregas left Arsenal and in 3 days he won a trophy.PUNK!

    3) No I don’t know how much did Wenger pay for Squallachi or AOC. DO YOU KNOW? Come on don’t make yourself the laughing stock here by saying that you work for Wikileaks..
    4) Everywhere in the world Players are bought and sold they come as kids and leave as players even at you fav Spurs and Barca.
    5) At least i have 1/2 the brain, can read, write and spank you as i am doing right here!!! You have none that why you don’t like to read and think!! Come on what grades did u get in school? Or rather did u go to school you fool?
    6) I am sitting behind the keyboard and writing and are you behind the keyboard or writing form somewhere else.
    7) Analyse this Cese Won a trophy comparable to Emirates Cup! We have 3 of them.

The last paragraph which you wrote makes it clear to me that you are a DICKHEAD.

"Whoever is making the call,I dont really care.Wenger is at the forefront of it all.Who will you freaking blame when the economy is down, the barber whose shop is on the corner of 10th street or your freaking president? This is madness"

No Muk until a year ago my family owned a restaurant that was often frequented at this time of year by many of Europe's top footballers and many of the owners of the top sports wear companies. Why they came I don't really know except in 93 it was discribed by the paparazzi trailing Lady Di as the place to be. So luckily through that I've met and been the guest of amongst others the umbro chief, and the guest of Nike Europe (Who by the way was more impressed by the fact that half our first double team came to meet me at the Nike box, and to ask after my family rather than came to meet them)

Did I help them find their Arse's? That comment was silly even for you! If you ain't got a serious arguement why bother? I tried to give you a serious answer and because you had no come back in respose you resort to name calling. I'm secure enough in my own sexuality not to worry about such base insults. I've got my wife & 4 kids worth of bills to prove exactly in which direction my sexual orientation goes.

That was a rhetoric Richie...dont take it the wrong way.Sorry you misunderstoood..Though I dont agree with you for most part, I have a lot of respect for you...On the other hand I still disagree with the point.Players know what is going on in the club. They may not have Einsteins genes but I am sure they know when the team need signings.
