In August this year we saw the departure of one of the greatest midfield player ever seen in the English league. Francesc Fabregas joined Arsenal as a 16 year old and broke into the team the following year after the sale of another midfield great in Patrick Vieira.

Cesc went on to become club captain, make 312 appearances for the club, scoring 62 goals and churning out 104 assists. The depressing part about his time is he only had one silverware to his name, the 2005 FA cup.

My favourite Arsenal player, Thierry Henry's departure wasn't as painful as Cesc. Cesc had so much to give us, he left at a ripe age of 24 and has started his career at Barcelona in blistering form scoring in the European Super Cup and his first 3 games in the La Liga.

While we knew he was going to leave for Barcelona at some point in his career, A lot of us prayed he stayed and played his best years at Arsenal and won us countless silverware.

Some would say he left because we couldn't guarantee him top honours and also compete with the top dogs in the transfer market.

So Cesc left and in came Mikel Arteta. A £10m signing from Everton on transfer deadline day. He made 208 appearances for Everton, scoring 54 times and churning out an impressive 41 assists.

The second he was signed, the media and their dogs, pundits and most Arsenal supporters started the Arteta and Cesc comparisons and felt Arteta was Cesc direct replacement.

Let's get this straight 1st, in today's transfer market it would be difficult to get a like for like replacement for Cesc. Cesc is a rare kind!

Arteta himself has come out to quash this talk;

“I am not here to replace Cesc and I would be wrong to try that.

Cesc was the best player at Arsenal and one of the top three in the entire Premier League.

I have no aim to become that. My target is simply to try to reach my highest level as a player and to help the team.

Cesc was at Arsenal for seven years. I have been here for a few weeks. If I try to be equal to or better than him, I would be confusing myself.

We're different personalities with a different style. I must find my own way to do well for Arsenal.”

Cesc and Arteta are 2 different players, where the comparisons starts and ends is that they are both products of the Barcelona youth system.

While you all know how Cesc operates, Arteta on the other hand is a midfielder who occasionally can act as an out and out Defensive Midfielder or a deep lying play maker who can burst into the opposition's half to score a goal or 2 or force the issue.

We saw in the Bolton game where he did the sitting and allowed our recognised DM in Song venture forward. Song eventually got a goal that sealed the 3 points.

In the Olympiacos game we saw him play the deep lying role and also help Frimpong in the defensive department, giving Ramsey the opportunity to venture forward and help out in the attacking third.

While Cesc was the player, our attacking play went through. Arteta would be quite different which could be to our advantage, predicting our attacking play becomes very difficult.

Arteta is strong on the ball, intelligent in his movement in and around his own half and times his runs into the opposition's half excellently. His passes are most times very simple but we can't understate what it brings to the team. I agree our transition from defence to attack looks laboured at times but improvement would come with games together.

Arteta would be a perfect fit in a 4-3-3 provided Wenger can get the combination right. As it stands the best midfield 3 combo is Song, Arteta and Jack. The question here is if we look sound in the creativity department. Don't get me wrong Arteta and Jack can pull their weight creatively what I feel they lack is the ability to do it on a regular basis like Cesc did reason I said we need a super quality player in my last write-up.

Arteta would also fit perfectly in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Him and Song acting has a double pivot would give our defence that shield which we have been missing for a while, our movement out of defence would also look effortless knowing we have a player who can pick a pass with calmness and intelligence.

Arteta can also adapt well into a 4-4-2 formation. A midfield him and Song/Jack is a mouth watering combination. The formation would give us defensive and creative balance in the middle and also give us pace down the wings.

Arteta comes into Arsenal at the right age, he won't hinder the development Ramsey and cancels the possibility of Wenger going into the Market for a defensive midfielder knowing he can fill in when needed and also seeing that Coquelin and Frimpong have also been impressive. He also gives us room to add that special talent in our creative department be it in January or in the summer.

I watched Arteta at Everton so have to agree with the above description of Mikel. He is similar to Cesc in that he's good at keeping the ball, has great feet and is an intelligent ball kicker. He is not as strong a runner nor does he get as advanced as Cesc does.

He did have a red hot run of games on the left flank for the toffees where he was noticeable in their near champo league qualification. If you wanted someone wide with a cross then Mikky the Matador was the one. Maybe that was then and due to being forced their due to a lack of other lefties.

hate to be negative the simple comparison is that cesc was world class and arteta is no where near that level

To be fair there is probably not another player in Europe who can do what Cesc does at the level he does it.

Arteta is a different player, a very good one but not the same as Cesc.

Arteta may just be the best £10m you ever spent if he stays injury clear. He was everton's best footballer, played games where he was the midfielder and we would marvel. If Arteta was 24 he'd cost at least double. I'm sure he doesn't care about the comparisons because he can be one of the best league midfielders (fitness permitting).

It's unfair to Arteta to compare him and Fab4 in the different position in the pitch. Fab4 is in the Attacker midfield but Arteta is in the holding midfield . Arteta has not too much time to adapt to the team but Fab4 has one year before go to the first team with a lot of babysitter (PV4,DB10, TH14 ,RP7 and Big Sol) to take care him. Arteta does for team in the difficult situation that made by his stubborn manager who insisted to playing in stupid wasting passing that never work and penetrate the opposite to win . The first of all to do is AW should change his mind to play for win not play in his stupid style. The second is choose the players by their performances and real positions not in AW's position that show it failure . The third is no preferable players of AW that showed they are not good enough for EPL even if Give the chance to the kid is good but the chance that AW gave always is poison to the kid, team and himself and he always accuses that he is right but it 's always wrong . The forth is " Trust in Arsene "and Arsene should reply the fan's trust by win not stupid passing style.

No comparism, cesc is far better than arteta in every individual honour, including present on the pitch. Nobody in the world xi will compare cesc with arteta that will denfend the reason, but for me i will give 90% to fabregas and 10% mikel.

I'm agreed that Arteta is special but his speciality is CDM. 4-2-3-1 will be perfect to cover our defences. Arteta knows english attackers how to stop them by compose defenders. If Fab didn't leave us and we get Arteta so our midfield will be world best midfield ever. Arteta control defensive side and Fab stands behind Attacker and the wings. Too bad Fab leaves us if he doesn't leaves so we could challenge Barca. :x

I read another post to put Arshavin in pos 10. That was basically what Fab's position was. So let's do that and have Gervinho left.

I agree you can't compare the 2. Since Fab moved more to attacking he stopped tackling where Arteta showed he was committed to the tackle even against Udenaise. It is tough on Arteta to compare to a player where the whole team and their play was moulded around Fab.

Song and Arteta allows better interchanging and a steady head in the middle.

Personally I'd rather have Arteta now than Cesc that didn't want to be here the last few years. You can see it in the injuries he got but doesn't seem to have at Braca and poor passes (that back heel against Barca comes to mind).

I think its most unfair for people 2 compare both of them. Like u rightly pointed out, d comparison should end @ d Barca Youth setup. Trying to bring it up after so many years wouldn't do justice to either of them. What Cesc brought to d team in terms of attacking prowess cannot be matched. What Arteta brings to d Arsenal team is also different n will tell as the season progresses. I'm tired of all these comparisons, Let's just get behind d boys irrespective off who is wearing d Red n white of The Arsenal n support them to victory.

Well, the first question we should ask ourselves is: how many players can get into a Barca team, gel immediately and has scored and created regularly like Cesc is doing... Just shows one thing- Cesc is a super duper player, Barca's tantrums helped get ona cheap...
Arteta on the other hand is a decent and EPL proven MF like the article says that can fill in a number of positions for the team...
My opinion is with time, and barring injury, the arsenal trio of Jack, Song and Arteta wld come good... With Diaby and Ramsey waiting to fill in...
    Great Article Igbafe...
