My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Thursday, 30 September 2010 12:03

Good afternoon Gooners,

After the lows of the weekend and then the highs of Tuesday, my mind is very much stuck on our upcoming clash with Chelsea, so much so that I can feel butterflies in my stomach when thinking about it. It is too far away to get into very much detail about it, I am sure plenty of quotes from both camps will be making its way into the media from now until Sunday.

All of a sudden I have a very good feeling about the game, I don't know if that is just my positivity coming out but the way Chelsea are being lauded as this super team who steam roller everyone they come across (apart from Newcastle and Manchester City of course) just sets it up nicely for us. Especially when the focus is on how much Arsenal need a 'world class' keeper. We always do better when our backs are against the wall, pardon the cliché. When we are expected to sink, we often swim away quite effortlessly.

Kieran Gibbs is the latest member of the Arsenal squad to publicly back the much criticised keeper. It was Fabianski's save from the spot after Gibbs was adjudged to have brought down the Partizan player late in the second half on Tuesday.

If Fabianski does start the game then you can expect the Chelsea players to target him. I just had a horrible vision of John Terry elbowing him in his ribs when jumping for a cross. I cannot stand that man with a passion. A Chelsea mate of mine doesn't even like him one bit and that just says all you need to know about his character.

I hope Chamakh pulls him all over the place on Sunday afternoon, gets away from Terry after a through pass from Cesc and makes the despicable piece of work pull him down in the box for a penalty and sending off. Ahhh, that would be very sweet indeed.

Sorry, my hatred of that man made me go off in another direction. Fabianski was the subject. If he gets the gloves, which I think he will then I hope he can continue where he left off on Tuesday, However the season goes and whatever happens to Fabianski this season I will remember that roar of jubilation after his spot kick save on Tuesday night. Anyone who wants him to fail needs their head checked or perhaps find another club to follow. He comes across as a very likeable character and every Arsenal supporter should want him to do well for his club regardless of past mistakes.

I only say this because some of the comments I have read in other places suggest that they would rather be proved correct than see him turn into a consistent goalkeeper. That really baffles me. Everyone has their opinions of players, everyone has their favourites including myself but we should all want every member of the squad to improve because that improvement will benefit Arsenal football club, which happens to be the team I support. Alex Song at 17 was never good enough to make the grade at Arsenal, said I sitting from behind my computer. Arsene and most importantly he proved me to be wrong and I love that. Why would I not want him to succeed?

Having said all of that, if I was making the decision on Sunday, then Almunia would start between the sticks if he was fully fit. West Brom aside, he has been in good form and there is no reason why he shouldn't keep his place. Unless he looks very bad in training.

Didier Drogba is looking forward to playing against Arsenal which isn't much of a surprise given his goal scoring rate against us in recent years. Drogba actually gave different reasons though.

Drogba said: "I love playing big games and I love playing against Arsenal, I always say that Arsenal is one of my favourite teams. When I was playing in France, Arsenal was an example for us because there were all these French players who used to play in the French league and went abroad to play for Arsenal with a French manager. So to play against them for me means a lot."

The importance of dealing with Drogba on Sunday is stating the obvious but it will be interesting to see how our new center backs handle him. Our previous defenders have had a tough time of it. I have a feeling that Squillaci will do a good job on him.

I find it amazing that even with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Thomas Vermaelen and Nicklas Bendtner on the treatment table, many of us are scratching our heads as to who will and who should play on Sunday.

Sagna, Squillaci, Koscielny, Nasri, Arshavin, Chamakh are probably all expected to start, the rest will be down to form and fitness. That pool will consist of Almunia, Fabianski, Clichy, Gibbs, Song, Denilson, Diaby, Cesc, Wilshere, Rosicky and Eboue. Wenger will have a tough choice picking five from that eleven. I will be scrambling around at 3.30pm on Sunday trying to get a first glance of the bosses’ final decision.

Time to move away from that, as I am sure much will be said in the next few days.

Our favourite little club Stoke City are still after an apology from Arsene Wenger for his comments about Ryan Shawcross when Stoke played Tottenham in August. You would think that they have more important things to concern themselves with but I guess not.

Apparently they do not want Shawcross to be seen in a bad light, well I think he is doing a great job of that on his own without any help from others. His horrific challenges, of the past have more than done enough. One in particular, that we know all too well.

I expect a hostile atmosphere when Arsenal travel up to Stoke in May, especially after we make them look like mugs at the Emirates in December. How I would love Blackburn and Stoke to finish in the bottom three at the end of the season. That is where they belong.

Teddy Sheringham has said that he would love to see Arsene Wenger take charge of the England national team because he understands the mentality of the English game as well as getting his teams playing the right type of football. It is not often that I agree with Edward but I do think he would be a great manager for England but would I like to see this? Absolutely not.

He already gets more than his fair share of sneering from the media, looking at Fabio Capello's recent treatment. The knives wouldn't just be out, the Samurai swords would be hidden away; waiting for any cracks to appear before they hacked (get it) him to death.

When Arsene does finally hang up his erm.. suit. I hope he finds another role at the club, if not then retires all together. Like a jolted husband, if we can't have him then nobody should.

Putting my knife down now and readjusting my eyes from psycho to normal, I bid you goodbye until tomorrow.

Song still isnt good enough for arsenal, hes tricked people into thinking he is cos he improved from being very **** to average. We're not an average club, we're a big club. Not one of the players in our squad would get in the first 11 of the invincibles team. Every player has been replaced with a player who isnt as good. No coincidence that Vieira's last kick as an arsenal player was our last trophy. As for Fabianski, people are getting over excited, he saved a poor penalty and tipped a ball around the post which was a standard save, he'll be up to his ways of fu**ing up soon enough. He should give Szczesny a chance before he leaves on a free.

Sorry Gooner but I disagree with you completely. Alex Song is a top midfielder who was voted player of the tournament in a recent ACN. He dominated in midfield against most of his opponents, to say that he is average is just plain wrong.

The invincibles comparison is just silly. Are you talking about every player at the same age or are you judging the likes of Pires at 27/28 against Nasri at 23?

    Elaborate a little more...

Very interesting. ML writes a positive article about various players and immediately attracts the worst sort of negative response. I don't believe this guy is a gooner, as he signs himself off. He's just another troll. Ignore them and they go away.
Have to say I was encouraged reading Goonerholic yesterday by the number of comments wishing Fabianski good luck, as ML does above. As ML says, if you're a true gooner, how could you possibly be sad if he proves us all wrong. It will take more than one good game to convince me but I'm open to being convinced and I of course wish him well on Sunday. Sometimes I think some people want players to fail just so they can be "right" and have another moan. And what has Szczesny actually done? Had half a season for bloody Brentford - hardly makes him world class. I'd look good at Brentford - well, maybe not, but you get my point.
Let's just get behind them. It's going to be a mighty interesting and exciting match.

Does anyone think that Diaby will start on Sunday?

ML, first off, great new look.

"Gooner" you're a moron. Nuff said.

    DK,

I agree with you. Not many people have actually seen WS (easier that way) play and I bet if he made mistakes they would be right on his back quicker than you could say Lukasz!

Thanks the Law. The praise must go to my mate though, great designer. I was just the finger waver. :-)

And if he does ML, which version will it be? I think he has a twin brother who turns up in his place on occasion. He certainly has the physical presence required, but so does Song. Despite all the nay-sayers around various boards, I'd go for Denilson. He gets through a mountain of work and doesn't get drawn out of position so much. People say he's too slow but then Diaby doesn't exactly overexert himself most of the time. But if he's in the right frame of mind, Diaby can be a match winner.
    My team would be:
Almunia (if fit)/Fabianski, Sagna (if he's woken up), Squillaci, Kos, Gibbs, Song, Denilson, Cesc (if fit)/ Wilshere, Nasri, Chamakh, Arshavin.
But I expect we'll start Clichy, not Gibbs, and Diaby or Wilshere, not Denilson. I certainly wouldn't complain about Jack being picked alongside Cesc - he clearly has what it takes. I just have a wee bit of concern about overexposure. If Cesc isn't fit, he has to play of course.

    At MeanLean

i think diaby will start if he's fit. Arsene tends to favour at least one of diaby or eboue in games against the big teams. Song, nasri, arshavin & chamakh are shoe-ins and having Abou in there will provide some much needed height to protect against Drogba, Alex etc at set pieces.

I think the Diaby we see will depend on his fitness. He usually takes a few games to get back up to speed. Once he has had a run of games then he is usually very good. One of my favourites.

When he has just come back from injury he can look awful. A fit and sharp Diaby would have been perfect against the Chavs midfield but I think the game may have come too soon.

I agree that Denilson should start, he has been very good and should have a bit in the tank as he hasn't played as much as the rest,

DK, I think you are cheating. You have too many players in your line up.

    Almunia
    Sagna
    Koscielny
    Squiller
    Clichy
    Song
    Denilson
    Cesc
    Nasri
    Chamakh
    Arshavin

If fit, that would be my team but I would be at pains to leave out Jack who was in super form on Tuesday. That drag back and flick to Arsh was just magic.

I imagine Diaby will start on Sunday purely for reasons of size. However, I'm wondering if there would be any merit to playing him on the wing rather than centre mid. I think he and Chamakh could cause Chelsea plenty of problems, especially if we 're going to be testing them with crosses

I salute you all in the name of goonerish' since invisible, all have to agree with me these would be a season for at least a trophy. The young guns nolonger young hv tremendously improved. As a goonertic, I admire +ve thinking. instead of being critical lets have some positive views on our players. Fab for example had some tremendous improvement on Tuesday night en he deserves credit on that. My only ?? is on Diaby's form at the moment. lets not judge him wrongly. I suspect his not either recovered fully or he is still short of training to get involved in the first team. Otherwise lets keep our attention up even as we look forward for the sunday show.

Ah you poor poor people, wake up and smell the fish, I love the club, so much, I want us to do well as much as anyone but it pains me to see the way we are. MeanLean, when has song dominated a game for us against a half decent opposition, its all very well doing so against Fulham at home but in the crunch games against the bigger teams, he wont dominate. I dont blame you I can see why you would think he's good considering how crap he was.

"Are you talking about every player at the same age or are you judging the likes of Pires at 27/28 against Nasri at 23? Elaborate a little more..."
OK , here's an elaboration. Almunia and Fabianski will at no age be better than Seaman was or Lehmann was, Toure at his best will never be matched by Djourou/Kosielny. Clichy could've been better than Cashley but has regressed. Song will never ever get close to being half the player Vieira was. Even Gilberto was class. Nasri could get close to Pires' level, Arshavin is quality, ability wise but he just seems like he cant be bothered. No creative player we have will ever get to the level Bergkamp was, not Fabregas, not Wilshere, none of them, Bergkamp was on another level, Bendtner/Chamakh/ Walcott gonna get to Henry's level are they? Your having a laugh. The club we love has one of the highest turnover's in world football and invests the least in the squad and then wants people to pay 1500 for a season ticket and 40-60 a game, its just wrong. And you can argue with me all you like but I love the club as much as anyone, i would die for the club but whats going on isnt right, we built a stadium and stayed competitive which is great but now we need some proper players.
  • Ugandan Gooner  - Song is Important
    avatar
I totally want to disagree with Gooner on the subsject of Song.
Song is the best holding player that we have in this team; the way he protects the defense and step up during physical situations justifies the fact that he is always on the starting 11.
  • Gooner
    avatar
Yeah he is the best DM we have but that doesnt make him good or good enough for us.
  • MeanLean

Gooner, I do not know where to start really. If you want the players to be the finished article when they have only started to get into the age group where consistency comes then you will be very disappointed. The invincibles team were full of experienced top level players in their prime. If you look closely at our squad then you will know that they are not finished yet. You are still comparing players like Song to Vieira. Why? There is no point, different age groups, different experience, different deveopment. Would you have Toure in our side now? Would you play Vieira as a first choice midfielder in our squad now? Would Bergkamp be the same player if he started the season? No, because it is a different time. You are judging our players completely based on what you see because they are not the same team as the ones that won the league.
  • estonian gooner  - gooner can u see the future?
    avatar
come on man. how can you say fabianski and song etc wont be as good as such and such player? i really hope fabianski will become a very good player. i believe in wenger and fabs previous goalkeeping coach in poland. they have seen em in training more than any of us. i just say lets wait and see. and i hope koscielny will be a world class defender. first signs are really good. he must learn for sure.he was outmuscled by diouf but he was good against torres. west brom is the only game he wasnt good. the whole team was crap. probably underestimating west brom. so COME ON ARSENAL COME ON FABIANSKI COME ON KOSCIELNY COME ON WENGER COME ON YOU GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONERS!!!!!
