My Vision

As the Gunners prepare for the final Champions League group game of the season, not much in the way of Arsenal news is travelling around this afternoon. Arsene did deliver us somewhat of a shock regarding our central defenders. Laurent Koscielny has shaken off his concussion and is ready to step back onto the Arsenal bike tomorrow evening. When we all believed that he would be out for a number of weeks. His supposed replacement Johan Djourou will not be risked after picking up a slight thigh strain.
It is a shame for Johan Djourou who must be frustrated for not being able to string a run of games together even though he is in impressive form but as regular readers of this site know, I think Koscielny is a superb defender who probably suits Champions League football more than any other defender in our squad.
Arsene said that he would rotate the squad a little so a few of the fresh legs will surely start which means a probable start for Van Persie and maybe Denilson but I will go into all that in tomorrow's pre match thoughts.
Wenger has confirmed that he is unlikely to enter the market in January for a new central defender as he expects Vermaelen to come back soon and we also have Alex Song who can come in if need be. Four central defenders and an emergency option for two slots in the team seems a reasonable amount. I think Chelsea would be pretty happy with three central defenders judging by their back ups.
Arsene was pretty defensive about erm our defensive record, pointing at our away form being the best in the league at present. Meanwhile Andrey Arshavin has taken a different approach, saying that we struggle all the time in defence. I love this part in particular.
"Sometimes I can't run, and let defenders cross so the forwards score a goal. It doesn't always depend on defenders. As a team we need to improve defensively."
Ah, that might be a reason. Perhaps improve fitness and then instead of not running you can actually run and give fall guy Clichy a helping hand, as Nasri does with Sagna on the other side.
I do agree with Arshavin that it is not just down to our defence, it is about the forwards all the way down to the goalkeeper. Everyone must roll their sleeves up and work hard when not in possession of the ball.
I must admit, I am a little bored of talking about defending and goalkeeping or so called lack of it. I enjoy talking about slick football, combinations, partnerships, Nasri's swivelling hips and rounding of goalkeepers. Speaking of Nasri, he is apparently on the verge of signing a new contract with us which is obviously a good thing is it not?
With these new rules in place that allows players to leave for a bag of soap after only being at a club for 15 minutes. (perhaps a slight exaggeration somewhere in that sentence) It seems like we are continuously handing out new contracts to keep our players at the club. What is vitally important is that we keep our group together, we have lost key players in previous squads in the past and it is a major set back to Arsene and the silverware hunt.
If Flamini and Hleb stayed for season 2008/2009 then you never know what could have happened as we were certainly the best squad in the league in the previous campaign. We had to rebuild our midfield and it took time. It takes time for players to adjust to playing our football as it did with Flamini and Hleb. Alex Song is not the same player who made his debut at Fulham, Nasri is not the same 21 year old who was superbly talented but lacked end product.
If we lost key players then it would be yet another adaptation period for the players.
In 2010, we have a squad with so much talent and I just want to see most of these players reach their peak together after years of learning and developing their own game and understanding each others game.
Nothing much else going around, certainly nothing that I can be bothered to write about.
Back tomorrow for Belgrade preview.

Can we finish with the Hleb Flamini chant please? Hleb was not significant to the offense, and Flamini's subsequent history suggests his great season was a career one, and an aberration, not a step-up to higher quality. he cashed in, which was one very smart move for him. But Arsenal lost little in their departures.

I think Koscielny is a superb defender who probably suits Champions League football more than any other defender in our squad.
I have no idea how one defender can suit champions league football and not Premier League.
Does not compute.
All I know is he has easily the worst distribution than any of our other centre-backs. I've lost count of the amount of times he's given away posession with his passes into midfield.
He still might be great, but he's dodgy at best right now.
Kos also seems a bit partial to trying to win the ball far too early risking getting mugged off and us getting pulled around the place. See Blackburn's goal at our gaff and I can't remember other instances but there have been quite a few.
Tbh I don't mind him, I think he has potential to improve, but I just got annoyed at your suiting Champions League football comment. It's just weird. We end up playing the English sides anyway, so who do we pick then? The players who perform in europe or in the Premier League?!!! ARGHAHGAGHAGHAGH.
Peace.

CL is played more on the floor & is more technical with regards to movement & passing. The PL is far more of an aerial bombardment. I would imagine that is what the writer is referring to.

I share you view on Koscielny i rate him highly and I think he'll be great defender for Arsenal. I should visit your blog more often.

Monk has said it right. I am not suggesting that Koscielny can only play in the Champions League, I am saying that he is still getting used to English football. We are not even half way through his first season in the Premier League, it will take time to completely be used to everything thrown at him.
But mainly he is more suited to CL because his strengths lie in tackling and reading the game. 95% of teams in the CL play the ball on the floor and have technical players.
People doubting Kos are clearly not seeing what is in front of them. He is the cleanest tackler on the ball from a central defender that I think I have ever seen. He reads the game superbly and comes from the Clichy school of whipping the ball away from the opposition before they even know it is coming.
He is being written off left right and center but mark my words, in the very near future he will be a true great defender. I have no doubts about that.
And Luke, I agree. You should indeed come back more often :-)

Hleb and Flamini were not my main point. The point was keeping a team together who are developing.
Now that we have a settled team, we should keep the likes of Song, Nasri and co together.

i am amazed at the amount of stick squizzle and kos especially are getting these days. have i missed something? when they came, most were raving at their performances, guess i've been asleep. in my eyes both are fantastic additions to our squad, and kos i feel is a natural defender.
in my opinion our problem has been more to do with getting the balance right in the team and establishing a more holistic attitude to defence.
i don't think the forced rotations through injury, suspensions etc have helped much either.
that said, this dodgy team with an awful, just awful set of defenders and defence-minded players with a clueless french manager have somehow stumbled their way to the top of the premiership. sickening really.
here's hoping we do the business tomorrow.

Well said nick!
I was so sick and tired of our own asking for the return of those 2 one season wonders even years after they departed, that the very mention of their names by our own made me feel ill.
We had 1 good year in 4 from Flamini (amazingly) in the very year he could leave for free! The sceptic's amoungst us might feel he put himself in the shop window playing well at the moment he needed too! He ain't done nothing since!
And 1 season in 9 from Hleb he played 90ish games in those 3years & scored 7 which translates into a goal every 12ish games which for an attacking midfielder is (as my kids say) Pants. Put another way he scored 2 a year plus one more in his best year for us. Which as you know my kids say is pants!
He ain't done nothing since!
We gained from both departures! Those 2 clowns both unfortunately gained from being at the Arse!

Hey Richie,
I am certainly not asking for a return of those two, we are certainly stronger now. I used to love Hleb as a player but Nasri will become a far better player and is far younger than Hleb was.
My point was that at the time if we kept that team together then there would have been a great chance for that side to have improved instead of taking the hit it did in the following season. A season where Song was thrown into the deep end and then improved over time.
If Nasri left in the summer (god forbid) and Song left for Spain for example and we threw in Vela and Eastmond as their replacements then it would be likely that the team would take a big hit next season until they reached their top level.
I am certainly not a we have to buy all our ex players back crowd, not at all.
Anyone think that topping the group tomorrow is a possibility? Nah, thought not.

08-Dec-2010 01:39 | | richie - sorry 4 late reply flued up kids:(
ML I get where your coming from exactly. Wilts resigning recently is very important as Nasri new contract will be, and yes I totally agree keeping "this team" together for as long as posible is probably Arsene's main aim.(which is why I think he dug his heels in over Cesc and Barca) Well apart from all his other aims that is? The League FA CL & now Carling and any other bits of silverwear he can find in the football car boot sale. While building state of the art stadiums training grounds and putting The Arse in amoungst Europe's Elite
However Hleb at his very best couldn't lace Shava's boots even at his laziest because Shava even in that state can turn a game in a few seconds of pure footballing genius. Nasri I won't even mention in the same sentence for fear of besmirching his good name. Its taken Nas a while to develope with us but I believe he may finally start to fullfil his potential and live up to his billing as the pocket Zizou.
Back to your point though; Personally I don't think we would have benefited by keeping Helb or Flamini for a day longer, likewise from the day that other one season wonder Ade Byebye clumped the very young NB I couldn't wait for the (kid) bully to be sold. Arsene's uncanny judgement proven right yet again.

Of course the CL is technically different for a defender than the EPL
we almost need 2 different teams for each competition. The more intelligent players can adapt well to each. I've said enough times Kosh is a prospect but that doesn't mean at the moment he'd be my 1st choice for the EPL. His rise from France's 2nd division to 1st then the prem in 3 years is meteoric he just needs a bit of time to adapt to the rigor's of the Prem.

I look forward to your piece on how inept Koscielny was in the Champions League last night....
He really worries me. Constantly trying to win the ball and leaving so much space in behind.
And it was in his special match type: Champions League. I fear for him in the premiership now.
