My Vision
Written by Mean Lean on Friday, 17 June 2011 11:16
We have had a taster of the new season with the publishing of the new fixtures this morning and the rumours that we would be facing Newcastle away on the first day of the Premier League season has proved to be correct.
As long as we can avoid Phil Dowd as the referee then we should be ok with that as a start. Dowd can do things with a game that Messi can only dream about.
The rest of August is a bit of a nightmare.
Newcastle (a)
Champions League Qualifier 1st Leg
Liverpool (h)
Champions League Qualifier 2nd Leg
Manchester United (a)
Now those league games are all tricky as it is but when you add the Champions League qualifier sandwich to the rest of the filling then it all becomes a little too much to digest.
I just want to thank the FA for sticking very difficult league games around such important CL qualifiers. Thanks.
It will be a difficult start but I would like to think that the players and manager can use these games to get the team to focus nice and early and prepare themselves to hit the ground running. Quickly.
We will start the season playing every few days but at least the squad will not have the excuse of being tired and not only that but we may actually have close to an injury free squad if not completely free. I know, I know I am asking just a little too much but you never know.
I can imagine the players scratching their heads and saying 'Perhaps we should have finished above fourth after all'
It will be interesting to see how Arsene manages the squad this time round. I presume that he will have more faith in the new faces that come into the squad from the outside, rather than certain players who were somewhat pushed aside during the course of the season. This should allow for more rotation than we saw in our last league campaign. At the same time players need a run of games to get up to speed and find their best form.
One of those players likely to be rotated is wide forward Gervinho who is supposed to join us in a 10.6m deal in 48 hours. The trouble is, he has been signing in 48 hours for about a week now. Which 48 hours is it supposed to be?
I have been wondering what Arsene plans to do with Gervinho and I cannot help but think back to the last day of the season when Chamakh was drafted back into the team with Theo dropping down to the bench.
Arsene pulled on his tinkering hat and altered his tried and tested 4-2-3-1 to a sort of 4-2-2-1-1 without a natural right sided player. I still cannot quite make out who was supposed to be ahead of Bacary on that day.
Wenger had been talking about the 4-2-3-1 having problems against defensively organised sides around that time and I wondered if another forward player would be one of his targets this summer. Now it seems likely that Gervinho will be joining our attack, I wonder if Gervinho will be that extra presence in the box, the one making runs for Van Persie and Cesc. A player who can use both wide and central areas?
If that is the case then one from the Theo Van Nasregas combination will have to play second fiddle come the big matches or the defensively minded sides and I could make a case for each of those players to be one of the first names on the team sheet.
No doubt there will be enough games to go around but you still have to have a strongest team, a team that you choose first and foremost for games that you must win.
I suppose pre season will be the place where we see the tweaks and changes to the team.
We have already been linked with Shakhtar Donetsk wide player Willian and now we are linked with his team mate Douglas Costa according to his agent Cesar Bottega.
Bottega said: "The Gunners have offered the club Denilson in exchange for Douglas but Shakhtar said no. They are not interested in Denilson and would want only money."
We were told that Willian was the target with Denilson going the other way and now Costa's agent has spoken about Costa being the interest. Whenever an agent speaks about Arsenal being interested in their client, it always makes me feel a little suspicious.
However I really like the player, I have done for a season or so now. Quick and full of skill. Excuse the cliche but he would get bums off seats and all that but I don't know what we would do with another wide player to go with Walcott, Nasri, Arshavin and most probably Gervinho and the same goes for Willian.
The only way we would be trying to bring in another wide man would surely be if one was on the way out and I would rather that not be the case for obvious reasons. I like Costa but would much rather we kept hold of Samir Nasri.
Before I go, I would like to wish Mark Randall, Thomas Cruise and Roarie Deacon who have been officially released by Arsenal. Hopefully they can find a good club and make a good career for themselves.
Back tomorrow.

as long as that c**t"fat phil dowd"is nowhere near newcastle,i fancy our chances-wenger & arsenal should put in an objection to the fa,thatwe NEVER ever WANT HIM reffing our games again-a scandalous performance-old bacon face would have guarranteed he'd never ref a game of theirs(manure)again, you can be sure!!
-
17-Jun-2011 12:24 | | Goonerak - "Easy" run-in
It may be a tough start but the run-in is piss easy. Just like the last 2 seasons...
-
17-Jun-2011 12:32 | | MeanLean
The idea of an easy run in scares me senseless.
An easy run in no longer exists with Arsenal anymore. We have to prove it is easy by winning the games.
-
17-Jun-2011 12:36 | | Iron Man
Newcastle away, eh?
So if we stick 9 past them in the first half, we might be able to hold out for a 1 goal victory.
I know I often sound contrary (it's not deliberate, I'm just an arse!) but I can't get my head around how people are still blaming Dowd for last season's collapse. He made some terrible decisions but there is no excusing throwing away a 4 goal lead. As long as we continue to blame others, we will never be able to identify our own failings.

17-Jun-2011 13:00 | | Jules - Gervinho
Just saw Gervinho at the Emirates...no joke! He was on the away fans bridge wearing a pink shirt and tweed jacket (worryingly)! My bet is he was having the picture on the balcony taken! GET IN!!!
-
17-Jun-2011 13:07 | | Jules - zzzz
Think what you like mate, he's had his hair cut a bit shorter as well. You're going to look like a right mug when the picture is released!
-
17-Jun-2011 13:15 | | Oduxology - kkkk
May God help Arsenal. Because I don't see Wenger buying that man is too hard to break. I hope he sign utility players this season bcos VP ve never played 25 league matches since he joined in 2005/06.

17-Jun-2011 13:19 | | JSP2303 - Run In
Yer right, the run in last season was sooooo easy we actually managed to show relegation form for the last 9 matches!!
-

Yer think even West Ham had better form than us over the close of the season!

17-Jun-2011 13:43 | | lothario the legend - gunner smash the rest
I hope we get Cahill, Samba, Willian, Gervinho, Costa or Melo
These signings are the perfect blend and missing ingredients for Arsenal.
especially Willian, he is amazing, check him out on youtube, then imagine what would happen or our counter atacks.
schezny
sagna samba cahill verminator
melo
nasri wilshire
willian
van persie walcott
or
schezny
sagna samba verminator jenkinson
song fabregas
chamberlain arshavin walcott
van persie
subs: ramsey, gervinho, song, chamack, fabianski, gibbs, djorou, kozzer
arshavin, jenkinson, chamberlain
the whole team is flexible in all areas of the pitch and this formation would be unstoppable, especially on the counter walcott is ready tp play up front now, and chamberlain can cover all attacking positions makin nasri walcott arshavin willian all interchangable i n wide or central positions.

I think you're giving them too much credit

17-Jun-2011 21:31 | | MeanLean
There is no doubt that the team should shoulder a huge chunk of the blame for letting a four goal lead slip. It should not happen regardless of the situation, I agree with that.
That said, as much as we shot ourselves in the foot, without the second half display by Dowd, there is simply no way that Newcastle would have got back into that game.
He didn't just give Newcastle a penalty for nothing, he made continuous bad decisions throughout that second half. Decision after decision and it was all in favour of Newcastle.
An average refereeing performance would have seen us win the game regardless of our second half display.
-
17-Jun-2011 21:33 | | MeanLean
Because we have so many difficult games in such a short space of time. Teams usually need to get games under their belts to get into the groove. Instead we have game after game of very important fixtures.
-
17-Jun-2011 21:43 | | double dapper - no easy run in when you dont know how to take the
I would have liked to have scratched some of those heads with a rusty nail after stupidly going 2 down to villa. They are lucky to be in the cl.
An easy run in for us would be home man u, away man city, home chelsea away either milan and home barca away madrid. For some reason those are the games we win.
Just as long as we dont play someone like wba, ipswich or accrington stanley in the title run in we may have a chance
-
17-Jun-2011 21:55 | | MeanLean
Double Dapper,
What do you make of the likely Gervinho signing? Where do we play him and for whom?
-
17-Jun-2011 22:30 | | CHGooner - Seriously?
Gervinho. Absolutely ridiculous. Wenger is like an alcoholic who thinks that 'another whiskey' (Irish spelling) will ' put him right'. Who on this site thinks that Gervinho is what we need? Yet another example that lthe guy in charge has totally lost the plot. As for the fixtures, I predict confidently that we will gain an absolute maximum of 4 points and more likely 2 from our first three. Arsene knows? Yep, he knows sweet FA .......
-
17-Jun-2011 22:41 | | MeanLean
I take it you have watched plenty of Gervinho over the last few years and you know his strong points as well as his weaknesses. I gather you already know how he will fit into the system or in fact the way that Wenger wants to use him.
I have only seen bits and pieces, so I cannot really judge him as yet but I would love to hear more from someone who clearly has more information than myself.
Tell us why he would be a bad signing. Apart from coming from the French league.
What do you think of the potiential signing of Samba?
-
18-Jun-2011 06:22 | | joetek9 - can't pls every1, canu?!
As good as Hazard was 4 lille last season it was Gervinho an sow who score da goals. Hazard may hav been da more creative but gervinho didn't do bad @ creatin either, he also scored 15 goals playin out wide most of da time so he is without doubt a quality signin. I hope we get Samba as well, he's got something we lack in our side that cahill still won't bring.
-
18-Jun-2011 08:18 | | CHGooner
This is just utterly ridiculous. This guy scored 15 goals In a pub league last season. We need a proper Premiership CB, we need a solid midfielder ands we need a prolific goalscorer for when RVP is injured. It just sums up Wenger, he is taking the piss now. I am seriously angry with him and his policy of recruiting from sub standard leagues. More if the bloody same. F off Wenger and stop playing your stupid bloody games at the expense of our club. Everyone is laughing at us now.

18-Jun-2011 08:58 | | panda - Gervinho!!!
Gervinho -hard worker pushes fwd, defends from the front powerful, fast and passes !
-
18-Jun-2011 09:02 | | panda - our problem is the defence though
as good as i think Gervinho is
we cant go through a game with kosseinlly, clichy, or one of our retarded keepers making massive mistakes
all of our keepers can stop shots but none can defend from set plays or organize the back line
-
18-Jun-2011 09:15 | | panda
um they won ligue 1 last season beating marseille psg lyon etc.
not exactly a pub league
same league that Terry Henry, Drogba, Ronaldinho came from to name a few

Have any of you lot actually watched any French football? I have, used to live there and regularly watched FC Metz and on occasions PSG when in Paris. I can assure you that compared to the EPL it is crap. The top three or four clubs MIGHT survive, Lyons a few years ago might have done ok, but the rest of them are Championship at best. The point is that this is a stupid and pointless signing that does absolutely nothing to solve our issues and just increases the perception that AFC is a place for mediocre Ligue1 players to triple their wages while winning nothing. Enough is enough. Wenger get out of my football club, it's not your plaything, it belongs to those of us who have invested emotionally and financially for years and were here long before you arrived and long after you have gone.
-
18-Jun-2011 09:32 | | Iron Man
Even if Dowd had put on a striped shirt, shouted 'HOWAY MAN' in Wenger's face and started shagging Vicky from Geordie Shore in the centre circle, at 4-0 up with 30 odd minutes to go with should have not even let them into our half let alone come back - even with 10 men.
We've been on the receiving end of terrible refereeing a number times though, haven't we? (Think Everton at home where the team still managed to rally and come through with a great win.) Righteous indignation should drive us on rather than cause us to collapse like a house of cards.
-
18-Jun-2011 12:02 | | MeanLean
Haha, I knew you loved Geordie Shore. You just don't want to admit it!
We collapsed much in the way that we did against Spurs, the pressure was on and we stopped playing but at the same time we can expect to have moments like that during the course of a season, perhaps not as bad as that but if we do our results should reflect our performance only and not such an input from what was supposed to be a neutral referee.
I am not trying rid any blame away from our team because obviously any team at this level should be strong enough and wise enough to kill a game regardless of being down to ten men with 45 minutes to go.
But I ask you this. Would we have drawn that game had we had a referee making decisions on the crime and not the teams?
-
18-Jun-2011 16:42 | | panda
mediocre ligue 1 players
essien, nasri, anelka, evra, odamwingie
spend 30 million on andy caroll much better option ?
yes i watch it - as long as ive been watching premier league
occasionally it can be as good if not better
-
18-Jun-2011 17:54 | | CHGooner
On what basis Panda? All the best players leave as soon as they get an offer from abroad! I saw Metz play about 15 times and PSG 4 times live. I saw teams at both ends of the table, derby games ( v Nancy) and whilst I enjoyed it greatly ( the atmosphere is a bit retro and 'homely') there is no way that you can compare the standard of football in my view. Whilst there were 1 or 2 more physical sides, most teams play an 'arsenal lite' style, which may be why Wenger goes shopping there. The problem is Ligue1 is no real preparation for the EPL and whilst very god players can come from there of course, there is a lot more uncertainty in my view as to how they will adapt and transfer to England. The time for taking chances ls over. We cannot afford to. Buy Premiership experience. You know what you are getting.

18-Jun-2011 18:08 | | Danish Gooner - Wenger.
We wont win any of our first 6 games and Wenger will be sacked come september-october,mark my words.
-
18-Jun-2011 19:15 | | CHGooner
Danish Gooner, whilst I understand your sentiments fully, I just can't see it. We will get a soft draw in the CL qualifier and we will win that. The Board will be ok with that. Therein lies our big problem. We won't win anything again though even if we have a reasonable start. Arsenal are probably the most predictable team going and Wenger the most predictable manager. The signing of Gervinho being a case in point. Déjà vu
-
18-Jun-2011 22:23 | | AFC4L - New contract
Hasn't Wenger signed a new contract?........
The window isn't even open and you are moaning that he isn't solving our problems already!?!?
Rumours around about Enrique, Samba, Cahill and also Gervinho etc but you chose to ignore the others and focus on Gervinho and moan about premiership exp???
Just because we need a cm & cb doesnt mean we shouldn't sign Gervinho as well? Just what we need is fans on the back of new exciting players before they even sign.
As for the French league so would you moan if we had signed Benzema before Madrid or how about if we signed Michel Bastos??
-
19-Jun-2011 04:00 | | Iron Man
Heh, ML, I'm might have to take legal action if you ever slander me again by implying I "love" Geordie Shore...
I reply your question with another, would any of our so called peers at the top of the league (Chelsea, United, City(!!)) pissed away 4 goal lead in similar circumstances?
-
19-Jun-2011 08:52 | | CHGooner
It was raised by ML that we had pretty much signed him and a figure of £10.6 m was mentioned. Nothing against the guy personally, it's about the manager doing the same old shit. Talk about staying in your comfort zone. I know, what do we need? Ah a strong CH with organisational qualities and ability to deal with Premiership. A good header, and tackler. A string Cm who will ensure we keep our shape and compete in physical encounters, a goalscorerwho knows what it takes to score regularly in the Prem. Let's sign a French guy who scored less goals than Darren Bent in an inferior league, playing for their champions. F ing joke

We all knew wat Van did last season, despite d fact dat he started d season injured.There4,d team is in need of a strong, skillful and wonderful stricker.
D defence has always been d home of error,a strong and experienced defender is needed.
