My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Thursday, 23 June 2011 13:54

It is a very quiet day in Arsenal land today. The tumble weed has almost taken my head off several times already this afternoon as I struggle to think of anything worth writing about.

I get the feeling that the journalists are thinking along the same lines as myself and evidence of that is the rehashed stories of Phillip Jagielka from Everton. Do you think they were tipped off, or got a heads up from someone in the know at the club?
Nah, a quick flick back through previous made up stories and bingo, Arsenal want to sign Jagielka.

I suppose we are likely to have more fabricated stories than most other clubs because we tend to keep our business in-house and not open to the media and as we know, they need content so if they don't get what they need then they simply make it up.

One story that appears to have some element of truth is the Chris Samba story. Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean has spoken of his desire to keep the defender at the club and that he has no need to sell his captain. Well Samba has spoken to the French press and he hopes that his current club will not stand in his way if a big club wants to obtain his signature.

I think Blackburn are probably resigned to losing Samba but as with everyone, they will want the largest possible fee for him. If they are dealing with Arsenal then they should know that the largest possible fee will not be coming their way, what they will get is what we think the player is worth and not what the current market say he is worth. I think that is the correct way to approach buying players.

A £12 million price tag has been flying around the place in recent weeks, apparently that is the fee that Blackburn would accept and if you look at the likes of Henderson and Phil Jones you would be forgiven for thinking that is a fair price but when you consider the fact that at 27 years of age and that he has hardly any top European experience and could very possibly be fourth choice then that price all of a sudden feels very top heavy.

If we do end up signing him then I would really be surprised if he was first choice. I just cannot see that being the case. It seems trendy to have Samba starting with Vermaelen as our new left back. That seems to have been spoken about quite often on twitter and various blog comments. I just do not see that happening at all for several different reasons. Time will tell.

There were rumours of a £10 million bid from PSG for Gael Clichy but apparently he does not want to go back to France, he wants to play for Liverpool. I do not know where this has come from because I haven't heard any quotes from Clichy but it did come from the trusty Daily Mail, so why would I have any doubts about it? I just wouldn't.

If Clichy does up sticks then I really hope it is abroad and not for another club in the Premier League. If you have not read the article comparing other top left backs then I suggest you do. His defensive statistics are difficult to argue against.

That article also compares the statistics of Newcastle left back Jose Enrique who will be apparently available for £6 million. I cannot remember where I read that, I cannot seem to find the article on newsnow.

Lastly the agent of Carlos Vela has said that Arsenal will not sell the Mexican forward this summer. According to Vela's agent he and Arsenal have had eight conversations about his future and Wenger wants Vela to stay at Arsenal.

Clearly Carlos has not developed as fast as we would have liked and I am sure the manager would say the same but I cannot help but believe that there is plenty more to come from Vela. He hasn't had a run of games to prove his quality but at the same time you wonder why he hasn't been given those games, especially at West Brom.

With attributes such as pace, good technique and finishing, you would expect Vela to have proven himself. I have an image in my mind of a more developed Vela jinking past defenders and slotting past the opposition keeper. Currently I am not sure if he suits the wide forward position although he has the pace for it and I am not sure if he is physically ready for the central position but that is the position I can imagine him being a success in.

If he doesn't leave Arsenal this summer then you would have to say that it could be last chance saloon for him. Fingers crossed he can fulfil his potential.

arhh, this is so boring, I wish we just went out and bought a couple of top class defenders, a king pin striker, and a power house midfield destroyer, but it will never happen, we all keep praying every day but it will never come, not long now till we get to see are heros like bentner, eboue, rosicky, almunia, squilaci in the new kit :( god help us

Please tell Wenger to spend this time to bring the fans some joy. that is our only benefit because we are not receiving dividend from the Board room. Please for GOD, Buy and make us happy this term. I have no club team except Arsenal in Europe. Some time i even get mad and get at the children in my house when i watch Arsenal defeated.

it is true but i if wenger is able to buy chris samba and garey cahill , arsenal defence line will look stronger with vermeleen going to the left footback, and i hope he sign gervinho and odemwinge. arsenal will be at a better place next season

Hmmm! interesting....looking at arsenal defence you will see defenders who can be easily outmuscled by any skillfull striker like drogba, tevez,& rooney e.t.c. Samba coming into the squad might just make the defence solid nd tight since he(samba) can play both midfield nd defence.
  • Geordie Gooner  - Samba 4th choice?

If we sign Samba he will be straight in the starting XI, alongside probably Vermaelen. If Clichy goes I think Wenger will either promote Gibbs or sign a left back, I dont see him buying 2 centre backs.

Samba though would jump straight above Djourou, Koscienly and Squillaci.

He may not be as mobile or a good a footballer as Kos and Djourou, but Sol Campbell wasnt that good a footballer either, or very mobile and he was huge for us. What we need is a big stopper in the Campbell mould, and Samba fits the bill, not only is he going to help solve our weaknesses from set pieces, but also he is a leader, a warrior, and he organises and shouts, which is what our back 4 needs.

I would make him our number 1 target. Get the deal done and make him an immediate first choice. Djourou and Kos are good football players but they dont have that mean streak in them to be first choice, they will be good competition though.

I am not so sure that he would be first choice. I suppose much of that decision depends on the opposition. I think it would be a bad move to play someone like Samba against Man U or Barcelona for example. Games where Koscielny stood out.

You can be sure that come the likes of Stoke, Bolton etc, especially away from home, someone like Samba would be important to the side.

As first choice in most games? I'm yet to be convinced.
  • goonerbegood  - wenger paid 15 million for arshavin ,at age of 27-

if wenger paid 15 million pouds for arshavin at age 27-28,why can't he pay 12 million for samba ,a defender.
when will we the club ever stop what they are doing, thenh they want barcelona to pay 50 million pounds for cesc and barca value him at 35 million pounds or less.

we will be here again next season with the same crap from our dearly beloved manager.

12 million pounds for samba for me is fair price,he has a 5 yr contract, black burn don't want to sell only for this price and we want to buy thebn we should put up the money or forget about it.

THERE ARE NO CHEAP DEFENDERS ANY MORE,ALL THE CHEAP DEFENDER ARE ALL CRAP OR OVER AGED.

las season wenger bought kos for 10.something million pounds and he was not even tested in the premier league, now you are talking of a quality defender whom has premier league experience for 12 million and wenger is wanting the palyer on the cheap.
this is one of the reasons why the most clubs dont like arsenal fc,always trying to get players for next to nothing.

Wenger you cannot always have it your way for ever ,sometimes you have to give in,not cos you are stupid but for the sake of the fans wenger, for the sake of the fans.
if we don't get proper qaulity and we fall short again cos of our reluctant to pay up ,then it will be the same shiite next season.

SAMBA IS WORTH 12 MILLION POUNDS,HE IS QUALITY,IF WENGER CAN PAY 5 MILLION FOR SQUILLACHI , THEN HOW MUCH WILL QUALITY COST.

thebn we slag of barca when they say cesc is worth less than what we are trying to get for him.
same old wenger ,he will never change.we will be here again next season debating the same thing over and over and over again

a big club ,with billionaire owners, can't pay 12 million pounds for samba and 15 million for cahill. next stop we will get players from france or turkey claiming they can do the job, come end of next season,we will have look like mugs again.

If we were to sign Chris Samba, he would start ahead of Koscielny, Djourou and Squillaci without a shadow of a doubt.

I personally haven't been convinced with Koscielny's displays for us so far, however he was outstanding against Barca at home in the Champions League last season.

Djourou put both Drogba and tevez in his pocket last season. To the best of my Knowledge Samba has never played in midfield

Before Campbell turned 36 he was very mobile and he was always a very good footballer

Kos was 8m and significantly younger with a lot of potential. Samba isn't worth over 10m
