My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Tuesday, 28 June 2011 20:41

Oh you've caught me on a bad day today, I am feeling worse for wear as I am writing this. Kept awake by a ruthless combination of a chest infection and insane heat. I haven't slept a wink and I am not happy about it. My sleeping pattern is all messed up now, hence the late post.

Cesc Fabregas is the talk of the day as the BBC revealed yesterday that a senior Arsenal official had said that Arsenal were willing to let Cesc Fabregas leave the club for the right money. The only news in that is that an Arsenal source had said. The rest is absolutely nothing new whatsoever. We have all watched the film, we know the storyline. Cesc Fabregas is contracted to Arsenal, he has a number of years on his contract but he would like to sign for Barcelona. Barcelona want him but are not keen on his valuation. As far as I am aware, zilch has changed.

Last year our stance regarding Cesc was different to this year, at least publicly. We sent out an official statement on the club website telling the world and his dog that Cesc Fabregas is staying at Arsenal and whoever is interested can basically piss off. I do not remember Arsenal doing that before but this time round the situation appears different, but it will only be different if Barcelona can wave something in front of Arsenal that we are interested in. Which would be a fat load of cash or perhaps Messi.

I guess the question would be, why talk to the BBC about this? Perhaps Arsenal would like to get the ball rolling, perhaps Arsene wants his squad sorted out as soon as possible. Perhaps he cannot make the signings he needs until Cesc has been sold. I do not know.

What I do know is that I want our captain to stay at Arsenal for next season but I have the feeling that it could well be wishful thinking as Barcelona are in the process of selling off some of their squad players. If they put up the cash then I think we will move onto a new chapter.

Players come and go and the saying that no player is bigger than the club is true but it doesn't stop the club from missing the quality of certain players. The club is obviously bigger than the likes of Bergkamp, Henry and Vieira but at the same time the club would be better off with either of those players in their prime in the squad. Wouldn't you say?

I am dreading the time when/if I read the 'Arsenal and Barcelona agree fee for Cesc' headline, that would be a sad moment but I think I should try and mentally prepare myself for that because it certainly isn't impossible.

No one wants to think about it, we all know it will happen someday but we may have to face it and think about how to prepare for life after Cesc. I don't want to upset you with it but it is the cycle of life.

The reason for my apprehension is that our current system is built around our skipper. He is the one who pulls the strings, the player who can spot the runner and play that decisive pass. I love Aaron Ramsey, I love Jack Wilshere I also love Abou Diaby, all have their own unique qualities but none of them can do what Cesc does, I am not sure if they will ever be able to do exactly what Cesc does. Those three mentioned are central midfielders where as Cesc Fabregas has always been a playmaker.

One thing that will hurt the most if Cesc does leave this summer will be the fact that we would not have had the chance to see Cesc and Van Persie play a full season together, or at least close to a full season. Maybe they were fit as youngsters but not as senior players. Regardless of set piece problems or experience or anything else that we are told we do not have, if those two had been fit over a full campaign then we would have won trophies. It may not be fact but it is Mean Lean fact for today.

If Cesc is sold then I wonder if Wenger will tweak the system once again to accommodate for the change of personnel rather than shifting someone else in that role to do what the best player in that position has previously done for many years. I do not think that Samir Nasri is that type of player, his tally of one Premier League assist provides evidence that he is not a provider for others, at least not yet. While Arshavin does provide a high number of assists and a great burst from that area, does he have either the stamina or the ability dominate a game from that area of the pitch? I am not so sure.

We have seen tweaks and changes over the years as different players come and go. Petit and Vieira were two strong powerful midfielders that allowed the wide men to licence to support the front men but in 2011 the game is often about possession vs bus parkers. I do not see how playing two defensive midfielders week in, week out would help us pick up regular points against negative sides.

Sticking all our eggs in an Aaron Ramsey style basket would be a massive risk in my opinion and I think our upcoming season is too important to put so much pressure on his shoulders, especially after such a bad injury.  He is not far away from becoming a permanent fixture in the side and I am sure he would have been if it hadn't have been for Shawcross but if Cesc leaves then we need to replace him with a difference maker of real quality.

All very depressing stuff really and I kind of hope that I am worrying for nothing. I felt pretty cool about it all last season but that feeling is different this time round.

Anyway, I have had my late night moan. I shall grab a hot cuppa lemsip, get back into bed and feel rather sorry for myself.

Back tomorrow.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has been omitted from all promotional material regarding the club's new away kit, due to be released on June 28, heightening rumours that the 24-year-old could be set to seal a return to Barcelona.

The Mirror reports that a deal could be reached as early as this weekend, after the London outfit conceded that an improved bid - having rejected an initial approach from the Spanish and European champions last week - could see their skipper return to Camp Nou.

If the deal doesn't go through I don't think he will give his all.

Meanwhile, Former Arsenal director Lady Bracewell-Smith has launched an attack on the club's current board, claiming they should all be sacked for failing to take the club forward.

Bracewell-Smith also suggested that continued in fighting between key figures in the Emirates hierarchy is hampering the club's progression and that a complete clear out is required.

"I agree that the current board should all go," Bracewell-Smith said on Twitter. "They are passe. Have nothing more to give to the club at all."

Bracewell-Smith added: "In time we will need a more dynamic pro-active younger board, and a good directional leadership."

I feel the same, the day I see him being paraded in a Barca shirt will be like a stab in the heart. It really is like seeing an ex you still love with someone else.

In terms of the latest developments I think Arsenal have delibrately leaked this info to the BBC. In a way its like we are calling there bluff the current situation cant continue so now Barca now Cesc is available, Cesc knows we will no longer stand in his way. The ball is firmly in Barca's court either they make an acceptable offer and we move on or they once again degrade Arsenal and Cesc with a low offer, If this happens perhaps Cesc will finally accept Barca have been messing with him for years.

i turn on to barca tv and laugh that barca gave 40.000.000 for someone who will worm up the chair and he losses his form and cries like hleb for arsenal while on the other tv i watch van persie lifting the epl trophy and cl trophy how ironic for fabregas hahahahaha

if you look at the games he has played over the last three years he has played an average of about 20 games a season. For someone we build our team arround it's no where near enought .

Cesc is only doing what other Arsenal legends like Liam Brady Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry did.Cesc has given us 7 great years for what? To see the great Invincibles team broke up much too early and not be replaced by quality. To have to play alongside sub standard players like Denilson Diaby and Song.Cesc is one of the top 10 players in the world but Wenger is not satisfying his ambitions. No Gooner can blame him for leaving

    Oh well!

Agree with the sayin', “No player is bigger than the Club”. Cesc goin' isn't the end of the world we just have to adapt with playin' without him.

A lot of formation talk has been doin' the rounds...... Yes, I love look of a 4-4-2 but the question is if we have the players to play in the middle of pack.

For me Wilshere/Ramsey and Song is a big NO for me.. Height, Strenght and Power missin' in that mix. If only Diaby had developed into what we envisioned he would become then a center midfield of diaby and Song would have been massive.

But still I will stick with our current formation with Nasri replacin' Cesc. Yes we will miss Cesc's 15-20 assists every season but if Ramsey, Jack, Diaby and Nasri can churn out 15-25 assists btw themselves in midfield then I've no doubt we can cope without Cesc
  • adrian  - is cesc still the hub of the team
    avatar
Lets get it right cesc has been a great player for arsenal. We all knew he would eventually go back to barca.. The future without cesc will be different and it does not need be seen as the end of the world. If the money is used wisely the overall team strength can be improved and the club has players with potential to play instead of him. If he wants to go let him go at the right price. No player can ever be greater than the team,

If Cesc wants to go,the door is that way.I am tired of these rumors and who said this and who said what.He has done what he could in his 7 years ...Thank you.All the best! After all if he leaves he will win a trophy even if he does so from the bench.

Don't even like to think about it, ML!

If he were to leave, I can't imagine we'd try and bring in a similar player from outside and expect him to fill that role straight away; you don't just buy a creative fulcrum like Cesc.

Can't see Nasri doing it either - he's better deployed out wide. Looking back, his best games last season (thinking Everton away - Fulham home) were wide on the right in Theo's absence, not in the middle.

Instead I think the system would change at least a little to get the best out of the players we have, with marquee signings (because the fans will be demanding them) arriving in other position - maybe further forward or deeper in midfield.

Riiiiight. Liam Brady left Arsenal because Wenger broke up the Invincibles too soon and played him with Diaby and Denilson? You sir, are a pathetic excuse for a fan. When you want to slag off the manager for no reason, at least abuse him for things he did, not what he didn't do.

Agree with that Ramsey may not be ready but he will be the natural successor for Cesc's position so if we do buy another player, as Arsene would say, it will BLOCK Ramsey or Wilshere's path right ? I really wish Arsene convinces Cesc to stay at Arsenal for just one more season atleast
  • Doliponpin  - Cesc can leave

Let him go and warm d bench, quote me if d time come he'll surely regret it, here is wht i saw in dream & my dream always come to past i saw asernal fc lifting trophy wit that new kit & celebrating it, am looking forward for that time to come to past
  • Esel  - cesc can leave i mean he can DO ONE
    avatar
All you cesc suckers behave yourselves! Stop trying to defend him all the time.
Personally I think hes an embarrassment to Arsenal and he's taking the absolute piss out of the club other players and mostly us the FANS!
You never hear other club captains saying that they want to play for another team. Look at guys lyk Terry, Gerrard, and Ferdinand you never hear any speculation bullshit about them because they are so loyal to their clubs and they respect the meaning of captain!
How can you win trophies with a captain that wants to be playing for your opposition e.g (ars vs barca) Cesc is pathetic and I've lost respect for him.
Our club captain should be eitha Van persie or Thomas Vermalen or maybe even song! These three players wil put their lives on the line for arsenal and they've showed it over and over again.
As for his move to barca that's not wise, Thierry henry is a perfect example, Arsenal's hero bt to barca he's just one of them players that they used n if that's not enough Hleb should seal it!

Life after Cesc? I don't think we can afford to promote from within to try and replace him. None of the players mooted are good enough (yet) to fill his boots and by expecting someone like Jack or Rambo to eventually fill that void will set us back 5 years. We'll be in 'transition' once more and the trophyless years would have been in vain.

If/when Cesc is sold, the manager will have to open the chequebook and bring in a genuine world class player who can slot straight in. No more kids. We genuinely cannot afford to wait for someone to develop otherwise it could be too late by the time they do.

Esel - exactly right! I've been saying this for ages now, how you can you have your captain desperate to play for another club?!
By keeping cesc we're not building for the future at all. Don't get me wrong I am dreading the day it goes through but realisticly why keep him, its becoming a joke. I'd rather our captain be someone who is Arsenal through and through and who laughs when it's suggested he could leave, someone Arsenal born and bred!

all u cesc bashers do u realise that we have a player who is xavi+sneijder+ pirlo and is only 24 y.o ?

do u realise that proto value hulk at 91 million ?

do u realise that chelsea paid 35 m for essien

    and 55 for torres

    and liverpool 35 for carrol

unless arsenal sees a three digit number before the comas with the 6 zeros they shouldnt sell.

it doesnt take a genius to see that arsenal is overachieveing as a club thanks to the managerial nous and leadership of the alsatian.

he is the only one who knows how football works and how football lcubs ar run ..

the arsenal board should light a candle of his height everyday when they wake up before going to work and get on their knees to thank destiny for bringing such a manager at their doorstep.

Arsenal fans should not worry about what will happens after Cesc leaves. Before he came, Arsenal was at the zenith of her power. If he leaves, Arsenal will still be great. One tree cannot make a forest. It will be in Arsenal's interest to off- load a captain who desires to play for another club. What kind of captain is that whose heart is not in the club that pays him and given him a NAME? Would a Steven Gerrard ever say:' I want to play for Mau U or Barca? I would rather do away with Fabregas. He has palyed his part that the club may move on.
When Ronaldo left Man U for Real, everybody said that Man U is finished. But we know that that is not the case. Man U won the Premier league this year and was the runners-up of the Cahmpions league.
I believe there is life after Fabregas.

I've never been a huge fan of Cesc's - he's an enormous talent but somewhat erratice and lately you can see his heart isn't in it. Plus we already have a similar player, in the form of Samir Nasri, who will get support from Ramsey & Wilshere. If I was Wenger I'd use the proceeds of the sale of Wenger to bring in a CB, DM and Gervinho, to compliment van Persie up front in a 4-1-3-2, something like this :

    Wozciezny (sp?)
    Gibbs - Koscielny - Vermaelen - Sagna
    Song
    Walcott - Wilshere - Nasri
    van Persie - Gervinho

No doubt someone will tell me I'm an idiot but that XI looks pretty good to me, especially with Arshavin & Ramsey off the bench.

its not a matter of what happens to arsenal after fabregas ..its more a matter of us being mugged out of selling one of the worlds best midfielders at an embarassing price tag.

if they want him they should pay something close to 100 million..anything less than that and the club should tell them to pi55 off.

    hulk 91 million torres 55 carrol 35 .......

and cesc 31 ? ...we are talking about a player who at his age is BY FAR the best in his position in the world.

why let him go for such ridiculous low amounts? just cause he wants to go home ? ....

When the word 'apparently' is used in a story I consider the story bull*hit. We know the only way Arsenal will sell is if Barca pay a reasonable fee up front as we have had a lot of bad experiences with their style of business in the past. Most writers say Fabregas has earned the right to leave, No he hasn't he has played less than 50 games in the last 2 years. Nasri proved he is capable of world class peformances in that position last season so moving him into the midfield sarting Walcott on the right and a new world class left winger and we are no weaker.

Esel get real Barca wouldn't want the likes of those you mention nor would Real. Neither Terry nor Ferdinand have ever been good enough. They are rated only in England and over rated at that. Its the same old storey home grown British players get over hyped by our press and the masses fall into the trap of believing we'll win the World Cup or the European Cup. Then we play a young German side and the short comings are exposed yet again and the dream ends for another 2 or 4 years. Only Gerard of those you mention could play in a top European team. Cesc made a mistake this year against Barca because he wasn't fully fit, but last year no one could've given more against Barca than Cesc. Earning a penalty and converting it with a broken leg.
  • richie  - The need for a play maker

Very true IM we need a proper play maker if Cesc goes, I say "if" because we know he will go one day but the big question is when?
Not at all sure the clubs will reach an agreement this transfer window.
There isn't anyone to promote from within, so now is the time to bring in one or two developing players to play under Cesc as he played under Patrick V.

With the FA rules we have very little chance of capturing a world class player Arsenal born and bred within the 50mile catchment area. Within that range we are competing with the Tiny Totts Chelski Fulham QPR West Ham Watford Millwall Etc etc Its not like Barca who have recruits from all over Spain,
