My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Sunday, 10 July 2011 15:46

Samir Nasri has left for Manchester City in a fee in the region of £20m, Arsenal have made contact with Aston Villa over Stewart Downing and we are looking to pay £18m. You must understand that this information has not come from me so don't shoot the messenger. I understand that this information has come from the very understanding Sky Sports News. They happen to understand quite a lot of things that are quite far away from the truth.

The Downing story is so transparent that it is almost laughable. Apparently Downing still would prefer to join Liverpool over Arsenal which if there ever was a doubt about the story then that just blew the plan wide open. Liverpool have offered an amount for Downing that Aston Villa have rejected, they want Liverpool to table a higher bid and why not after watching them spend £20m on a rookie midfielder.

Is it ridiculous to suggest that Villa have leaked this to the media so Liverpool raise the stakes. Choosing Arsenal is a good idea as we do not publicly talk about which players we do or do not look to buy.

In real life news and not stuff invented by people with an agenda, the Arsenal boys have set off on tour which means it is now only a few days until we watch the Arsenal play again. I am very excited about this. At the end of last season, I was willing the weeks to go by, for the curtain to close but now I cannot wait for it all to begin again.

Manuel Almunia and Nicklas Bendtner did not travel to Asia as they are apparently in talks with other clubs about a departure away from the club. I think that sounds very credible and is probably far closer to true than the usual 'understands' statements.

Who those clubs are and in which country/league remains to be seen. Many players vanish off the footballing radar when they leave the Arsenal, I am not sure if that will be the case this time with Nicklas Bendtner. I suspect that he will have a good career and this potential move will be very good for him and probably good for Arsenal given the system and style of play we have. Manuel Almunia is the type of former player that could well disappear from our ear shot if he finds a club abroad, which I am sure he would try to do.

It is quite remarkable how last season you couldn't squeeze past a comments section, blog and forum without hearing Arsenal fans call for a new goalkeeper. I was one of those people before you ask. Now you do not hear a goal keeping peak out of anyone about that position.

With the departure of Clichy and the possible departures of both Bendtner and Almunia then it looks as if the door is open for new signing to walk through. One will be Gervinho on Monday after his documents are sorted out and perhaps we can bring some more in shortly.

I didn't understand the madness surrounding Wenger's interview. People were shouting '1 or 2 signings?!!!!!!' with many exclamation marks to prove their level of anger.

The thing is, we have to follow rules that all the other clubs have to. We can only have a certain amount of players in our squad and those players are divided by age, homegrowness and lack of homegrownningness.

This is what some people would have wanted Arsene to say.

'Ze squad is merde, I am looking to cut some of this 'deadwood' I have lurking around the squad, I don't really care how much they go for, just go FFS! Then I am going on a mega splashing spree to splash some cash from my warchest. I am looking to spend big money this year to show some intent. I look at ze likes of Henderson, O'Shea and Jones and I feel full with jealousy. I will hand over my list of targets for you to have a look at..'

That of course would be a little silly from every position apart from the making fans excited part. It would of course make it more difficult to shift our squad as teams would know that we are trying to pack them off and it would also make our hand much weaker when trying to buy players. I am not quite sure what those comments would do for the rest of the players really. Not sure if our young players would get all that excited about being called deadweight, a word that has sprung up and has caught the internet virus, spreading around faster than a snotty nosed man on a packed train in rush hour.

Which brings me onto his Kieran Gibbs comments. Wenger was asked about why he let go of Gael Clichy and his answer was that Kieran Gibbs needs to get games and push on.

Firstly, Arsene was not going to say, Clichy is not good enough and I want to replace that area of the team. Wenger wasn't going to say that Clichy moved to Man City for extra cash or to win trophies.

Remember, Arsene Wenger is not writing a comment on a blog, he is talking in public where millions of people listen closely to what he says.

We know how much Wenger publicly likes to give his players confidence, especially young players and that is what he tried to do with Gibbs. He has done it to make young players in the past. He wants to let Gibbs know that despite his injury problems, he has a lot of faith in him and to continue to work hard because he will get his chance. This doesn't mean that we are going to go into the season with one left back. I reckon that Traore and Botelho have gone to Asia so Wenger can have a close look at them before making his decision. Whatever happens, we will need at least two players in that position, even more so with Gibbs recent injury problems.

A couple of seasons ago, I found myself disagreeing with Gooners about Gael Clichy and a high number of people were arguing in favour of Gibbs to be in the first team because he is better defensively and has a better final ball. Now, at least in a few examples. I have heard the same people say that Gibbs has got bad positioning and shouldn't be near the first team.

Personally, Gibbs should be competing alongside another quality left back so I do expect Arsene to go back into the market for that position. Once Gibbs stays clear of injury then he is certainly good enough to claim that position as his own, even at the expense of someone like José Enrique. Other squad members such as Traore have a chance by impressing in pre season so the boss has to make that call. As he did last summer when giving Wilshere a chance instead of buying someone like Gareth Barry.

In other news Thomas Vermaelen is determined to make up for lost time after missing much of last season. Good news. He is like a new signing. In fact he is like three signings. I mean can't he can play center back, left back and defensive midfield right?

Wellington Silva goes back to Levante swing on loan, and with a new manager at the helm, hopefully he will see plenty more first team action than the previous coach. Good luck lad.

Back tomorrow.

Nick is a really talented striker. Arsene did waste his talent a bit by playing him on the flanks which he clearly dislikes. He is 23 and so should be playing regularly at his age. So I can clearly understand why he wants to leave. All the best to him wherever he goes. Gibbs is not a bad player either. In fact he was really good when he got some game time in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 season. He obviously is very much injury prone and that's the main concern

Arsene has a funny way of sticking to his guns ...he won't sign a left back knowing he has traore n Gibbs.

    Hi Mean Lean,

sorry but for once I'll have to disagree with you. I think we'll begin next season with Gibbs as first choice and Traore as second choice, which is quite a frightening thought as none of them are ready (well at lesat from what we've seen up to now).

As for the "one or two signings" I was one of the people shouting '1 or 2 signings?!!!!!!' .
This is how I see it :
    We need :

-One third GK as I don't think Mannone will fancy staying one year without playing.
-One CB to replace Squillacci (who I hope will leave).
    -One left-back.
-One proper defensive midfielder to replace Denilson.

That's already four players and that's before thinking of replacing Nasri (I think and even hope he'll leave).

And even then we'll be short up front in January when Chamakh and Gervinho leave for the ACN.

Mean Lean - There's a job vacancy at the Emirates. Arsene Wenger's press secretary. I think you should apply. You're perfectly qualified for the role.
Don't forget to say at the interview ; you'll work for half pay. I'm sure you'd like the board to save on the wage bill. Good luck.

I hope you are right, Downing would not be an asset in my eyes !!! He is OK but with 2 years on his contract at 18 mil you are having a laugh !!!!
Gael leaving brings no regrets to me. Since the little Russian came, with his lazy attitude to defending, it has shown Gael's positional weakness, always being caught out of position because Arshavin won't track back. A bit like Ashley, Gael was always better going forward than defending. Gibbs has the ability, but is very injury prone. For me we must strengthen there or we will be forced to play Eboue or Vermaelan there before the end of the season !!!! Traore is not the finished article yet for me !!! Enrique is a good option, very offensive minded player !!
I hope that we can sort out that young Japan kid's visa out quickly. I would love to see him test himself at Premiership level, sooner rather than later !!!
As for Goal Keeper, Szczeny looks to be one for the futre, I would love to see him on loan for a season or two, ( like Joe Hart Did ) to iron out those mistakes that all keepers need to get out of their system. ( like the final ) He has bags of confidence and looks to be a bit of a character too. For me we should get Given in for a couple of year !!!!!! £4mil is a steal !!!!!!

I agree with "A Gooner among others" it is so scary to have just Gibbs and Traore play Carling Cup, FA Cup, Premiership and Champions league, we are at a point where we can't really afford to give so many people a benefit of doubt, we all know Gibbs is good but injury prone, and guys i hate to be a prophet of doom, but with our great Shirt #1 - 0, we are always wondering when his next big injury of the season is gonna come, so we can't afford to have him as our only backbone for a striker..... but I will be so happy to see Bendtner, Diaby & Alumunia leave..... I wish we could see some good LB, 2CB's and a prolific striker to partner RVP. i could have loved it so much had we bought Demba Ba.... he's the kind of poacher we want at the club. my suggestion for a great LB would be Leyton Baines, I admire the way he plays, great with free kicks and scores quite often ( a quality we never had with Clichy) Cahill and jagielka (if the rumors are to be believed) will be great additions to the squad. yes we currently have a strong enough squad but we cant compete with just them on all fronts, we need a MAJOR TROPHY this season!!
    Adios

If Traore is given another chance then I assume that would be because he has massively improved since his loan spell. As an attacking outlet he is very good and would be an option against defensive teams but defensively I wonder if he is ready. If he is not then I would see Wenger buying a replacement.

I don't see Squillaci leaving so soon after joining the club and I wonder if we will buy another center back. I actually think we are pretty strong at center back on the whole. However our organistion on set pieces is not good enough and if that was addressed along with increased aggression then I think we would be fine in that area.

My point about the 1 or 2 signings was that we cannot buy a whole host of players until the squad members that move on, do just that. If both Almunia and Bendtner left tomorrow then I bet Wenger's stance would be different.
  • MeanLean
    avatar
You are indeed correct. I have made that mistake before. I need to slap myself a couple times I think.
  • MeanLean
    avatar
I certainly think that injuries have been holding Gibbs back. If Gibbs played the same amount of games as Wilshere last season then I don't even think the subject of a new left back would come up. Games, games, games it is the only way to truly judge a player.

    As for the grown ups conversation;

Downing= shit, over rated English journeyman
Gibbs= deserves a chance, but we may need cover, especially if Pedro doesnt even stay in England
Wenger's transfer comments were always going to rile the knee jerks amongst the Gooner contingent. They love to trot out his "lies" as if they were in a fucking relationship with the man. Quite fucking freaky these doomers. But they say there's a thin line between hate and love.

    Up the Arse!

I don't think Gibbs is much better than Traore defensively and he'll be first choice, so I can definitely see Traore as back-up to Gibbs.

What do you mean by "I actually think we are pretty strong at center back on the whole." ?
The true question is : Are we stronger than ManU and Chelsea and City in that area ?
My opinion : ManU : No; Chelsea : individually, not far and collectively definitely not as strong, and City : I think we're a bit stronger.

No worries, these are tense times !!!

Downing isn't coming, as the man said it's a story to get his price tag up !!!
Gibbs a great kid, I hope he takes his chance !!!! As for the cover there I'm not convinced it's AFC quality !!!
Wenger is sucking the fun out of supporting AFC !!! He takes the fans for granted !!! If he opened a top end restaurant and served up average dishes made with average ingredients, made by average chefs, the customers would eat somewhere else. Arsenal position themselves at the top end of the market, our tickets are THE most expensive in the country, yet we cannot attract true world class players because we will not pay really top wages !!!!! Wenger knows that he has a captive audience , he preaches to us about lowering our expectations, saying we should not wish for things we cannot afford.
When a player comes to our club as potential, we neture that potential into the finished product, only for that player to leave !!!! We pay too many average players too much money and will not pay exceptional players the "going rate" Do you think the likes of Samir think, what a shame, I really wanted to play for Arsenal but they won't pay me enough !!! No they more likely think " if Arsenal won't pay me I will go to someone who will " !!!
It's not a fair world mate !!! It's outside our control !!! We are trapped !!!!
I Love Arsenal !!! Keep the faith !!!!!!

Stewart Downing your having a laugh mate

I cant believe this rubbish I understand we have to up our quota of british players as we only have Gibbs, Walcott, Ramsey, Wilshere and Walcott as squad regulars but Downing is terrible, no pace, goes missing in big games, has a decent cross but we have nobody that attacks crosses so basically he is useless, if we have to sign british we should go for Gary Cahill, Chamberlain, Adam Johnson and Jack Rodwell...........Downing is an embarassment and I will get hammered at work by the spuds fans if we get him as I have cussed them for years about being linked to Downing every bloody summer

The talk was sensible and truthfull.. sick of reading sensational rubbish. thanks. i would be interested in your thoughts on signings and where best to play people. i would like to see vermaelen in centre midfield and i think gibbs is not a left back more a wide mid. i think we will buy a new left back, and gibbs cover would be of decent quality to the position. i agree with your take on the downing situation, villa are trying to up the price. i hope we make some good signings but i trust ramsey, wilshire, gibbs to do really well, plus JET might have an impact this year. i trust wrenger and glad he is the boss, our team will be fine, and we do not have a right to win things. but i fancy our chances with a few careful signings. looking forward to watching gervinhio he defo has ability and supposed to be great round the camp.

DD - That's the problem with you A.K.B.'s. You can' t separate the issues. In your extremely narrow and limited world, you cannot understand how someone can love their club, yet somehow NOT idolise the manager as well, or criticise the team when the situation WARRANTS it.
I can appreciate what Wenger HAS done for us, but that is fast turning into ancient history ( in footballing terms ). So yes, Wenger WAS good for us. But unlike you, I'm not attached to him like a barnacle to a ship's hull. He's been given MORE than a fair chance to restore our fortunes. He's proven he's not up to the task anymore. I can see that, and have changed my opinion of him. He has lost my respect. Now he's like a relative who is overstaying his welcome, doesn't realise the hour is late, and fails to take the hint to move on. Sad, but true, if you're OBJECTIVE about it.
The REAL fans, who care about their club, its history and tradition, and its past successes pre - Wenger ( remember those ? ), are ( rightly ) concerned and angry, that the club we love has been hijacked by a board that puts commercial success and profits ahead of the interests of the team and its supporters. And a compliant manager who acts more like an accountant for them, rather than as a coach.
I've been a Gunners supporter since the late seventies, so I haven't "changed my favourite team a bunch of times," as you incorrectly presume. We realists complain because the current administration give us a constant supply of ammunition to do just that. But your type wouldn't see that, as your perception is so shallow.
The reason we haven't improved on and off the field, is largely because of dim wits like you, who are happy to tolerate complacency, and be fed a constant diet of bullshit . Will you EVER wake up to this ?

I'd rather put trust in someone that loves the club and speaks positively about us than listen to the drivel that some so called supporters come out with.

If Denilson was so bad then why has he made it internationally and captained the U21's? Is he really as bad as your making out, were all those other people that trusted in him wrong? As for Bendter he had plenty of opportunities up front, if your questioning where Wenger plays his players ask Thierry Henry about his change of position when he came to Arsenal.

What Wenger has said is what we were all saying last season, that the team lacked desire and hear - perhaps he is partly to blame for that. But to say we rust with him at the helm is brainless. Think about what your saying.

Wenger must go!!!!!!! and sign Benzema!!!!!! and Hazard!!!!!! and Ronaldo!!!! pay them 200k a week!!!! bankrupt the club!!!! please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember us finishing like 12th under Howe. I remember Richie Powling, David Price and David Hillier. I remember, god help me, Gus Caesar.

If you have only "supported" Arsenal since the time AW came - you have no fucking clue what he has done for this club, nor any clue what it was like before he came.

We could easily, very easily, be a mid table club, like Fulham, but for him.

But no, we are have come 4th or better every year since lord... I forget.

Yes, there are problems, yes AW isn't a perfect human being. But please, consider where we'd be without him - very likely outside the top 4, and Europe, and behind the spuds. Is that really what you want?

Of course, if you want to blame Wenger for Almunias and VP's red cards, at crucial moments in Europe, for TV's injury, for Barca's outrageous unsettling of our player, for the financial doping of Chelski and Manchester al-City, by all means, go right ahead.....

Unfortunately for Nikki B52, he is a striker that doesn't fit into our current system of play. Our football is not about finding a big target man up front. RVP can play the lone striker role excellently and better than Bendter. I am sure Nik will go on and have a very good career, hopefully overseas......

Interested to see Traore & Gibbs battle it out for the LB starting spot. Botelho has gone back out on loan to Spain-hasn't he? Traore will surely have improved with his loan spell at Juventus and Gibbs needs game time and an injury free spell to cement his place.

Many forget that Clichy had a run of bad injuries a few years back, (back & foot) for a while (people considered him injury prone!) but eventually became one of the real workhorses of Arsenal! So not worried about Gibbs recent injury record.....fingers crossed!

It's a phrase that every manager uses when a player has been out all season. Red Nose, the special needs one and twitcher have all said it.
    So grow up!

Why bother trying to engage in serious debate with Spud infiltrators?
I'm an Arsenal supporter thats pre Don Howe to clarify. I don't need silver wear to justify my support of Arsenal. I support no matter! You get it? I'm a supporter! Supporters support.

I don't wake up in the morning thinking how can I slag off my club my teams players and my teams manager today. If I did that I wouldn't and couldn't consider myself as a supporter. No doubt Tiny Tott supporters wake up in the morning and think how can we slag off our successful neighbours, we spend more money than them year after year and yet never finish above them.

Possibly thats how they support their team because thats all they can do criticise us and hope one day they finish above us. So when plebs end up on an Arsenal blog and slag off our players, our team, our manager, and even our board of directors I can only presume that they are Spud infiltrators, what else could they possibly be?

I'd end up chinning a Spud if they ever dared to say those things in my presence, but on line I can only identifiy them for who they are! Just in case some of our own young and vulnerable mistakenly think that thats how you support a club by criticising everything it stands for!
