My Vision

Written by Squid Boy on Friday, 05 August 2011 14:39

Okay before we crack on with the important news, allow myself to re-introduce myself. My name is Squid Boy and I am addicted to all things Arsenal. I used to write frequently on here until real life dictated that I couldn’t. But now I’m back. I’m on Twitter, so if you like my upcoming brand of breeze then follow me here – http://twitter.com/#!/TheSquidBoyLike

For the next few weeks/months/undisclosed time period (hey, that’s how Arsenal roll) I shall be assuming blogging duties from the legend that is Mean Lean. He tells me he is busy with “other projects” – and reading between the lines I’m going to assume Le Boss is training him up to be our fourth centre-back. He fits the bill perfectly – English; domestic experience; great physical presence and good feet for a big man.

So onto the important news of the day: the draw for the Champions League qualifier. We all wanted to avoid Rubin Kazan and we did. But we got lumped with the second-worst option in Udinese. First-leg is at home (sans the suspended RvP and Nasri) and as is always the case with home ties, it is imperative we keep a clean sheet.

I’m no Italian football aficionado – hell, I can’t remember the last non-Arsenal game I watched – so I’m not best placed to tell you how much of a threat Udinese are. But any team that finishes above Lazio, Roma and Juventus can’t be bad. Plus Italian teams are always well-drilled.

That said, this isn’t the same Udinese side as last season, having sold off former-almost-Arsenal midfielder Gokhan Inler; linked-with-Arsenal central defender Cristian Zapata; and the real jewel in the crown, attacker Alexis Sanchez, now at our old friends Barcelona. Plus we DO have an excellent record against Italian sides. Under Arsene Wenger’s reign we have overcome the likes of AC Milan, Internazionale, Juventus and Roma – often quite handsomely.

There will be plenty of time to pontificate on this tie as it draws nearer, but what I will say now is what I always say: if this Arsenal side is on point, we will win. Apart from Barcelona, I don’t think any team in the world can live with us when all the facets of our game are functioning to full capacity.

So while Udinese is not quite as hellish a prospect as Kazan, it does set in stone the hellacious month that awaits us:

Newcastle(a)

Udinese(h)

Liverpool(h)

Udinese(a)

Man Utd(a)

And that’s not to mention the round of internationals which takes place beforehand, nor the transfer shenanigans that will ensue as the month draws to a close. The most important month for the Club in recent times? I’d say so.

Ahead of the big kick-off next weekend we have our final pre-season friendly tomorrow as we face Benfica away in the esteemed Eusebio Cup. So esteemed that the last winners of said trophy were, in fact, Spurs.

While I’d like nothing more than to field our strongest side and dust off the Emirates trophy cabinet while simultaneously ensuring Spurs are no longer reigning “champions” of anything, I do wonder what side Arsene will field, especially with internationals in midweek. Will he play his best possible XI to get them in-tune for Newcastle away? Or will he omit RvP and Nasri for Chamakh and Rosicky on the basis that the latter pair may be called upon versus Udinese? And what of Cesc? I guess we’ll find out in 24 hours.

On the subject of Cesc, yesterday the annual Members’ Day took place. Having been to the previous three Members’ Days, I was somewhat disappointed to miss out this time, although I was comforted by scenes of the now customary torrential rain hitting N5 while I followed it from the sanctity of my own laptop via Arsenal Player.

The two most notable things were that the traditional squad photoshoot was abandoned due to the adverse weather conditions, and the players were not introduced individually but they came out as a group. The connotations of this are obvious re: Cesc and, to a lesser extent, Samir Nasri.

Once again, only time will tell over the future of those two players. The quicker it gets sorted, the more time we will have to re-invest and re-focus on the goals in hand. Here’s hoping for quick solution on both fronts rather than one which drags out to the end of the month.

Henri Lansbury impressed at Members’ Day with a screamer of a goal, following on from a couple he has grabbed for the Reserves this pre-season. Confusion surrounds whether or not he is now part of the first-team squad with Jamie Sanderson over at Young Guns Blog stating that he has been promoted (alongside Benik Afobe, Emanuel Frimpong and Ryo Miyaichi), although the player himself denied it on Twitter.

For a relatively low-profile player, Lansbury has been quite hot topic amongst Arsenal fans these past few weeks as rumours surfaced of him being potentially sold despite an impressive loan spell at Norwich last season. For what it’s worth, I think he deserves a shot with us. A few games off the bench in the league when we are cruising with 15 minutes left (don’t laugh, it may happen) and a run in the Carling Cup side would be my choice. There are some who say that he isn’t good enough for us, that he isn’t world-class, but since when was our squad brimful with only outstanding players? I’m hoping Lansbury’s passion for the Club and work-rate can see him grow into our very own Darren Fletcher-type – solid if sometimes unspectacular; an Indian to Jack Wilshere’s Chief.

Fellow young Gunner Kyle Bartley signed a new contract with the Club a couple of days ago and was promptly loaned back to Rangers yesterday, where he impressed last season. Despite his own-goal-tastic appearance in the Emirates Cup last weekend, I have high hopes for him and hope he can continue his progression in the Scottish Premier League before returning a more-rounded and experienced player next summer that is able to do a job for us.

I’ll finish with an anecdote. Barcelona bought Alexis Sanchez for £23 million this summer. This has not only weakened our CL opponents Udinese, but also weakened Barca’s own bank balance, meaning they are less willing/able to meet our £40 million valuation for Cesc. So if we play hardball and Barca continue to flounce around offering nowhere near that amount, he may stay with us. Despite all the protracted nature of his transfer saga, Cesc then stays with us, gets his mind and body right, helps us overcome a Sanchez-less Udinese and guides us through the Hell that is August and into the Heaven that is the rest of the season, free from idle transfer speculation and packed only with football. Outlandish? Yes. But a man can dream.

Enjoy your weekend folks, especially the game tomorrow. I think Mean Lean will be back with his post-match thoughts on Sunday, while I’ll see you early next week.

    Hi fellow Gooners,

What's worrying about the tie is that if we don't get past Udinese - who is still fairly formidable, especially since the away fixture is in the 2nd leg - then we'll lose around 25m quid in revenue AND lose out on potential transfers as we don't have the allure of Champions League football.

On top of that, van Persie is suspended for the home/1st leg which means Chamakh (!!!) will probably be starting and his preseason form has been crap to say the least. I'm praying to God that Wenger will have at least bolstered the squad before we go into the games but time's running out.

I'll be praying for our beloved team!

    Best wishes!

And we'll most probably be without Fabregas and Nasri if the rumours are true. Please Mr. Wenger, pull out the cheque book and sign some quality players!

...if our game is on point, if we have no Fabregas and Van Persie is suspended?

    Who will step up?

I know the month is an important one, but I feel pessimistic anytime these important months come up. The last time we had a fixture glut of this magnitude was when we played Villa, United, Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive matches. That didn't go off too well, hope we do better this time.

It's difficult to comment really, because the Arsenal side that takes to the field in those matches might be markedly different to the current one. Cesc, Nasri, Nick, Eboue, Lansbury, Mata, Jagielka, Cahill, Samba, so many variables.

Speaking of Lansbury, I don't think it will be the club's fault if he leaves. They have offered him a contract, the ball is in his court now. He can make it here if he's patient. Everyone can't have a Wilshere-like rise.

Great to see you back SB. Have always enjoyed your posts. Especially your match reports. I still remember your Carling Cup reports from a few years back. Good read as always.
Re: Udinese I think we got our just desserts for f@#king around at the end of last season, that said I just hope Arsene can keep his record against Italian sides intact. Also I do hope Lansbury stays and gets a chance this season. Arsene has hinted as such, but then Arsene does a lot of hinting, so we never know.

Lansbury is in the first team squad according to the club web-site (No 46).

I'm happy with drawing Udinese, yes they finished 4th in serie A but they have ripped the spine out of their team, their tactics were built around Sanchez and now he is gone.We have a good record against Italian teams because of our vastly superior fitness levels and pressing game. Italian football is played at a slow tempo and they try to keep the ball Arsenal will have 50%+ possession and play at a fast pace. That said I don't think we will wipe the floor with them and there will still be a job to do in the second leg. Getting our trip to Old Trafford out of the way early is certainly a good thing, ManU start slowly so it's when we are most likely to get 3 points there and if we do win there it will be massive for the season ahead. If we are sitting here after that game with 3 pl wins out of 3 and qualification for clgs then the air of negativity will be gone and even Spectrum(cunt) will have to give Wenger his props. Most likely start is beat Udinese twice beat Newcastle and the Liverpool and ManU games will yield 3 points between them our first 5 games+ 4wins 1 loss. Would not be a bad start considering the general opinion of Arsenal right now

    This from Arsenal.com…….

Wenger – “Judge my team in May, not now.”

    By Chris Harris ( November 7th 2008 ! )

Arsène Wenger is not planning a spending spree in January because he does not believe his Arsenal players are failures.

Not for the first time – and certainly not for the last time – the Frenchman spent a chunk of his pre-match press conference discussing his intentions when the transfer window swings open in the New Year.

The implication from this persistent line of questioning is that Arsenal’s current squad is not good enough. But Wenger disputes this and insists that his players should be judged at the end of the season, not now.

“At the moment I am always answering questions like this,” said Wenger. “But I tell you come back in May and we speak about it.

“I believe in this team and I believe in the strength of this team and I have always to answer questions that the team has ‘failed’. We make a balance in May.

“You can expect Arsenal to be active tomorrow at 12.45 and for the rest January is a long time away. I believe that this team personally is very strong and recently they don’t get any credit. But it’s a good moment for this young team to grow together, show resilience, show strengths and an opportunity to be a strong team in the future.

“Good players can always help you but I believe at the moment I have good players here. I do not want to focus on January and I am not sure at all that I will buy.

“The solution is not always to buy players. The solution for me at the moment is to trust the players I have because I trust their strengths and I trust their intelligence, so let’s show it.”

Remember, this was from almost THREE YEARS ago !!! Sounds much like what he says these days, huh ? (Same old, same old.)

Wow Spectrum, please give it a rest. Stuck record much??? Funny that you should say same old, same old, since you repeatedly regurgitate the same old things with your oh so witty punchline. Please get some new material.

Yes, Wenger is flawed. Yes the squad is flawed. Yes, new players haven't arrived.

However, to quote a Python called Monty, "always look on the bright side of life...", in this regard, we have a very healthy club that hasn't bankrupted itself competing for honours. We have a world class stadium. We have a conveyor belt of talent that will start producing the goods. The worm will turn.

If it doesn't turn, yes, we will all have been wrong to have faith in a system that everyone praises Barca for having (and then in the next breath damns Wenger for thinking could work in the oil money saturated EPL) and you would have been right all along. Will that make you happy?

well what is there to be said really..other than being ripped off and raped by wenger kroenke and gazidis..there isnt much Arsenal left...im sick off it...and im sure this season wenger and the board will see just what Gooners think..
  • Gerry Lennon  - Sans Cesc, sans Nasri ...

I cannot imagine that Barca would like the idea that they are such a little club who is having to raise funds by raiding the piggy bank ... well selling the children really ... in order to get a player they have so publicly courted. To be dimissed by Arsenal would be a blow to their own self esteem. Therefore I think they will find the 40m before long.
If not, Fabregas will stay ... until the next time!
He is also a top professsional and will play 100% committed.
Nasri? Well he is not signing a contract so put him up for sale ... and hope Inter out bid Man City/Utd? If that had been done when they first gave him a deadline we would not be in the position of having to scramble around looking for who is now available 8 days before we begin a new season.
Let us hope now Silent Stan has had a word with them, things get moving!

Very good post SB, nice to have you back on board.

Agree with pretty much all of the post. Especially how I want the Cesc scenario to play out. I certainly do not believe that it would be impossible to end that way. Cesc is clearly not their priority, if he was then he would be a Barcelona player today.

While the CL draw scares me somewhat, I have to agree with Podge. We have a very good record against the slower Italian teams. I was frightened in Inter, Roma and Milan but our class showed through. Ok, the squad is a little different today but I still think with players like RVP, Vermaelen, Gervinho, Wilshere et al, we will have plenty.

I am slightly anxious about the Cesc and Nasri saga but not as much as many others it seems. I just do not believe that we will be in a position when the window closes that we would have lost Cesc and Nasri without replacements. I just do not see that happening.

If anyone key to the squad leaves then Wenger will bring forward one of the many targets he has spoken to and lined up. I am sure many targets are waiting for the call.

If we have signed zero after the window then I will join Spectrum in his doom. Ok, not quite that far but you know what I mean.

Good to hear that AW understands and shares the fans' frustration about the dearth of signings. He had also expected more but promises a "super quality" player soon. This from ESPN who are quoting AW, not making it up as they go along (Daily Mail etc). Let's hope this means some deal is more or less wrapped up. My hope is that it will be a defender, now that Bartley has gone back to 'Gers. I will have nightmares if Squillaci is still our fourth choice come September.
Life doesn't always go to plan - you can't always get what you want (as the Stones used to sing) but sometimes you get something unexpected and exciting - let's hope that's the case. Although for some people, whoever it is AW has in mind will never be good enough because it's not the player they wanted. You can please some of the people blah blah blah ...

I'm curious about new signings right now, when I analyze the squad it's pretty much the same that collapsed last season but as is often forgotten this squad got to a position where they could make a huge collapse, managed to beat Chelsea, ManU and Barcelona. Clichy is gone and it looks now like Gibbs and Traore will play left back(or even jenkinson) Gervinho will play left wing and i'm sure he will help defensively much more than Arshavin. The starting left back wont be as exposed as Clichy was last season.

Vermaelen is back that's a world class centre back and leader we missed last season but Djourou looks to have turned back into the hesitant, lacking aggression defender he was when I wondered if he would make the grade at Arsenal maybe he needs counselling or something but the shoulder injury seems to have scared himaway from putting his bosy on the line. Jenkinson is a young, talented defender who plays all across the back4, at the moment an excellent squad player to have. Frimpong is fit and shaking off the rust in pre-season quite well, his understanding with Wilshere should make them a team greater than the sum of it's parts.

RVP was promising fitness-wise last season he played his most games for us in a season yet and the results showed with record breaking goals. We can only hope this isn't a false dawn for his fitness and that he will manage 30+ games for us. The squad is currently good enough for a genuine title challenge but we want more than that and we are only a couple of players short of having the best squad in the prem. A new left back and a new centre back look the most needed right now we wont get the media choices of Baines and Samba. Look for more Wenger type buys he has had a knack of restoring confidence in talented but flopped players, no need to list them I assume.

Davide Santon the rampaging full back of Inter Milan quick, skillful, athletic, full of energy and young sounds like an Arsenal fullback he was once talked about as the future of Italy and Inter but a poor run and attitude problems saw him sent on loan where he didn't exactly set Serie A on fire and Inter are being linked with full backs. His talent is undoubted but his stock is currently low a fresh start and a bit of the Wenger magic could have him back in Ronaldo pocketing form.

A big strong aerially dominant centre half is what the critics cry while the more intelligent say yeah as long as he has pace and can control the ball under pressure. That kind of defender is hard to find, we were last summer linked with Simon Kjaer who ticks all those boxes but he went to Wolfsburg where he "had not lived up to expectations" Felix Magath. They reportedly want 15m and considering that Cahill will cost 17m and Jagielka even more; Kjaer is cheaper, younger and most importantly better. Needing to rebuild his reputation hungry for trophies he would likely accept not being an immediate first choice.

Someone will say "and Veloso too" but oh dear god no he is the most over hyped Portuguese player ever and that is saying something.

It's looking more and more likely that both Nasri and Fabregas will stay(mostly because they haven't left yet). Kjaer and Santon would be excellent additions and I'm surprised we haven't been linked with either of them already. Once Chelsea and ManC bring in the players they want Wenger will finalise deals for his targets without fear of being outbid
