My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Wednesday, 10 August 2011 17:03

I usually start an article with good afternoon etc but that would be unfair to readers from outside of the UK. Sometimes I forget that the internet is such a big place. Which clever sod thought of the internet ey? It is hard to imagine what life would be like today without it. For a start, I'd probably be reading the sports pages trying to get a sniff of Arsenal news that wasn't made up transfer rumours. Instead I get to ignore that on the internet.

Anyway, as you may or may not know, I have been away for a little while and will continue to do so for the next few weeks. Meanwhile some excellent people will be having their say in my place so many thanks to them.

In my absence some interesting things have started to unfold at Arsenal. As I assumed activity has increased as the transfer window is coming closer to shutting.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has finally found his way to North London from Southampton, we have been tracking the lad for sometime and other major clubs have been trying to obtain his signature but he chose us. While us Gooners often complain about our youngsters being over paid the benefit of the club working so hard on the youth side is that we should remain one of the biggest attractions in the world for the best youngsters in the world.

The fact that we have one of the best developmental managers as well as paying youth players the equivalent of Chelsea paying their first teamers should mean that we should regularly have world class players coming through the system for the foreseeable future.

As already mentioned by Squid Boy in yesterday's blog, the idea that signing Chamberlain will prevent Arsenal from signing a center back is somewhat ludicrous.  I haven't seen the latest version of Football manager but in the real world deals are not done individually by priority. I am sure many deals, offers, bids, talks are done at the same time. The player who signs first and last is not usually done on the priority of the player.

In other words, the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should have no impact on our decision to buy or not buy a defender. The same names appear to be floating around the place. Phil Jagielka was on everyone's lips and then back to Gary Cahill. The rumours have now switched to Scott Dann of Birmingham City. Judging by the comments from Wenger and Gazidis, I would expect someone to be heading into the club before the window closes.

The signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain seems to continue a theme this summer. The promotion of Jack Wilshere, Emmanuel Frimpong and Kieran Gibbs in place of Gael Clichy. The signing of Gooner Carl Jenkinson and now the signing of Chamberlain shows that Arsene is building a future British base of young hungry Gunners, all within the same age group.

Arsene Wenger used to talk about keeping the balance between the English players and the foreign players back when the likes of Ray Parlour, Martin Keown and company complemented Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp and the rest of the talented squad we had.

After those legendary English players retired or were moved on as they were past their best we had to rebuild the side but top quality English players with the technique to play Arsene Wenger's brand of football were extremely over priced.

The likes of Rooney and Ferdinand went to Manchester United for huge sums, sums that we simply could not compete with while the likes of Gerrard and Scholes and co were developed from young at their clubs. The club have been working on doing just that. Developing future British players and it is only now that we are starting to see the benefits of this.

I would say that if we manage to keep hold of these players which should be easier than trying to keep hold of players like Nasri, Flamini, Adebayor etc who have no natural loyalty to the club then we could well have a base that will catapult the club towards the very, very top for many years at least domestically.

Obviously a large section of support do not want to engage in conversations about our potential future, so it is important to supplement these players with quality bridge players who can help the club win trophies today and not just waiting for tomorrow.

Players like Gervinho are an excellent start if you ask me, but we still need to add to our squad with some more established talents.

The rumours persist that Cesc and Nasri will be heading out the door. Chamakh pretty much said that which probably isn't wise saying so publicly at this time. Apparently Manchester City will be launching a £22m bid for the player and with a year to go, that would be great business for us and probably for them as they have endless pockets.

Barcelona continue to try and force through a Cesc deal by stating that Arsenal have realised that Barcelona will not meet the £40m and will accept a lower offer, they are waiting for a response. I hope we continue to send a fax back to them with Gazidis' sticking two fingers up at them until they pay what Cesc is worth.

While Nasri, Bendtner and Cesc are still at the club I suspect those replacements will be on hold until anything changes. The central defender that we are trying to buy will not depend on any outgoing players which should make people feel much better, I hope.

And finally, we were greeted to some rather lovely news yesterday evening that Ryo Miyaichi has been granted his work permit. That is great news for everyone. I am looking forward to Arsene sending him on with 20 minutes to go against a tired looking right back. Immensely talented, full of tricks and speed but needs to be eased in slowly. From what I have seen, he will take time to make the right decisions at the right time as well as needing to improve physically. Once that comes then it will be hard to keep him out of the starting eleven I would say.

Like I said earlier, fans do not want to talk about the future of the club too much but how can a potential team of Wilshere, Ramsey, Miyaichi and Chamberlain not tingle the senses just a little? Now that Joel Campbell's Costa Rica have been knocked out, perhaps it won't be long until we see him wearing the Arsenal shirt on the official website.

Anyway, Squid Boy might be around tomorrow and I shall be reappearing soon.

til tomorrow.

Great to read a positive article about Arsenal amid all the gloom and doom that's filling our world right now.

Well wiritten article i hope our Midfiled stick togather and play for Arsenal for a long time. However the immediate future looks scary. Any Young player takes a year or 2 to get adjusted to a team, I hope AOC and Ryo step up as fast as Jack and Rambo did.

I am already woried about next year as Rosisky and Andre will leave.

With Fabregas, Nasri and Bendtner going, I would sign Campbell, Mata and Cahill. But I'd be chugged with Goëtze, or Valbuena. Dann or Samba at CB wouldn't be bad at all either ...

    Szczesny
    Sagna Dann Cahill Vermaelen

    Mata Song Wilshere

    Walcott RVP Gervinho =Dreamland

I agree, nice to read a positive article, too much negativity. I know its a shame we haven't one any silverware for a while BUT we have been so close over those 6 years. AND factoring what we've spent compared to our 19 rivals WENGER has worked miracles. Just like moyles has done at Everton. And every other manage who has to live within the means of the clubs finances. I'd like to say that the new rules next year will have an effect as clubs as i understand will have to purchase players from the profits of they're clubs finances. We'll SEE. Manc City have already shown a way round that £400 million in Sponsorship for 4 years I think!!! WOW. Anywys enough jibber jabber - Trust in WENGER - UP THE ARSENAL with or without CESC and NASRI!!! We got Gerv, Ramsey, Wilshere, Walcott, Miyachi, VP, Song, Verminator, Sanga, Szchezny etc Please may they all stay fit all season! TO THE QUADRUPLE and beyond!

  • Seyi Imbuya  - You really have Vision
    avatar
You really have loads of vision and intelligence. It takes these two attributes to see beyond the gloomy pictures the press and the superficial fans are painting. yes! while admitting our faults, we should not forget to always count our blessings. the way a lot of fans think nowadays, we run the risk of throwing away the 85% that's right with our club while chasing that admitedly (elusive for some time) 15% . People are too emotional. there was a time when what arsenal fans wanted was OC or any interesting signing, now Arsene gets us OC, all we are doing is complain just because he hasnt bought a defender YET. what if OC is potentially a 'Messi' (judging from the might and number of clubs interested in him, we needed to get him asap irrespective of any other issue).
It doesnt stop us from buying a defender. And to that Wenger and Gazidiz have said categorically that they are working hard to bring in one...what else do we want.
We fans need not move to every beat drummed by the media or activities of other clubs. it should not matter if Utd signed 3 players early on. Every move should be judged on its merit (OC is a good move). Also our transfer activity should not be judged by when Utd concluded thiers but at the end.
I'll say this last thing. Wenger is a visionary, he is more than a manager. A manager manages the time (tenure) he is contracted to...think Mourinho, A visionary tries to keep you at the highest level possible at present, while making sure that you are successful for 50years or more.
he doesnt live for the day.

Dann is a very good defender if he had was fully fit for whole season last year Birmingham would not have gone down. Mertesacker would not be bad signing either. we need to spend and beef up the sqaud.

Now that i've gotten to terms with Cesc's departure, it's time to move on. I've just spent my evening watching the french and for my money Marvin Martin is a real quality player. He passes forward, has intelligent movement on and off the ball, is only 23, scores goals and has a great assist record. He's very well suited for the central role and would be better than Nasri- who will be sold- and Ramsey who's not ready. If we don't get him, we'll miss out on a great player.

"People reproach me for not buying players, but if I play older players, then Jack Wilshere doesn’t come through to the first team so you cannot have everything."
says it all really, we cant buy older players as it will stop wilshire.

Anyone that says that AW is not deluded is as deluded as him. absolute joke and disgrace.

Its all about making money for himself , the board and the shareholders.
    What a shame.
  • MIXY
    avatar
I don't like to get into internet fights as they are completely pointless but I have to call you a retard. The board took no dividend from the club between 08-10. Wenger can't take the clubs money for himself that would be embezzlement and there is a fairly hefty jail term for that.
He has a team capable of beating Chelsea ManU and Bacrelona in the same season managed to compete for 4 trophies to the latter stages 2 of which we lost to the winners. He would only be deluded if he tore it apart.
A defense that while weak on set pieces, is incredibly strong from open play does not need major change. Gibbs is far better than Clichy in the air so that change has immediately given us a more balanced defense.
Squillaci and Koscielney were new to the premiership last season and while unconvincing were not the absolute shambles they have been made out to be. Squllaci was the poorest of our centre backs last season and has not looked much better in pre-season so criticism of him can be justified however Kos has looked good and showed a lot of class last season if he was sometimes outmuscled and left flat footed he has acclimatized well since his start. Vermaelen our best defender missed ALL the important games last season his return alone could save us 10 goals. Djourou also showed that when fit he can shackle Drogba and Tevez 2 of the best strikers in the world.
It is a very difficult job to judge which youth players will be good enough at the top level like Wilshere and Ramsey and who wont. Wilshere was arguably our best player last season and one of the top midfielders in the league in his first season, if Frimpong does likewise this season is he deluded for keeping faith?Of course Frimpong might not be that good at all but he looks a very talented and physically imposing player.
The new signings of Gervinho, Jenkinson and OX-C are all improvements to the squad or do you think Eboue is the right back up for Sagna and that our left side offered very little outlet last season?
Arsenal and Wenger aren't perfect but they are not in danger of missing the champions league this season for the sole reason that Arsenal are much better than spurs and Liverpool. Chelsea are the most likely to drop from the new top4. manU new keeper is clearly not ready to play in the prem and they cleared out the most experienced players in the squad. ManC have an Italian manager therefore will draw too many games to ever actually win the premiership
  • richie  - More foolishness from John what a shame!
    avatar
Oh just look surely not? Wenger's got to sell before he can buy? Well I never! Imagine that? So there wasn't bundles of money in the kitty just like the international football accountancy firm Deloite, told us there wasn't.

They said Arsenal has the 5th largest debt in the prem, and the club would need to sell before they can buy, such are the financial restrictions being placed on buying. If Cesc & Nasri go before we can really buy anything more than a cheap £10 mil Gervinho then what does that tell us?

Forget the CE and Manager saying that money for transfers is available. We should all realise they could hardly turn up and tell the annual general meeting, the Sponser's, Ad Company's, and the corporate boys, not forgetting all us ordinary bod's who've just got stung for 6%+ sorry but we've got no money to buy the exciting new players you all hoped for. We can only keep on buying the kids with potential we've been buying. It would've been financial suicide!

Some of our own are unfortunately not the sharpist tools in the box!

    John,

As you don't think this site is balanced, I thought I would quote you something from the Arseblog website. Thought you may like it.

    -----------------------------------------------------
    http://arseblog.com/2011/08/its-back/

"The new season is here and I simply cannot fricking wait. “But Tim, Tim, how can you be excited? It’s all to shit. It’s the end of the world as we know it, so how can you feel fine?” To the naval gazing naysayers my riposte would be: ‘if you’re not excited about the prospect of a brand, spanking new season, wrapped as it is in pristine cellophane, then it’s time to consider why you persist with the sport’.

Yes, yes I get it. People are unhappy that we haven’t signed an atomic super mutant of a centre half as yet. People are aghast that we’re wanking our bank account dry on 12 year old wide forwards. Yes David Dein should come back and cast a hex on the billionaires in West London and Manchester whilst simultaneously purging the world of all sin. But living life in anticipation of a worst case scenario that may arrive at some undetermined point is a miserable way to treat an exciting pastime.

I’m looking forward to strapping myself in and enjoying the ride, whatever it brings. That’s the fun isn’t it? Finding out how things do work out? With regards to the 2011-12 season, we are at the cusp of sweet, unknowing ignorance. Tis blissful and exciting if embraced in the correct way. Frankly, I don’t spend the final moments before getting on the rollercoaster dreading the inevitability of it careering out of control and tossing me to my death. We may well go to hell in a hand cart. We might get relegated and liquidated in one fell tidal wave of grimness. But you know what? I spend about 25% of my annual salary watching football, so I think it makes sense to enjoy it."

  • John  - Guilty as charged

Forgive me for being too passionate and ambitious ml.
  • MeanLean
    avatar
John it is nothing to do with ambition. Every fan in the world is ambitious. Every fan wants their team to win everything and every game. As I have said many times before, what we want as supporters has no impact on the team. Actually no I am wrong.

I suppose you would have an impact on the team. If all Arsenal supporters backed the team and showed ambition then it is more than likely that the team would respond to that and be better, thus giving us a better chance of winning trophies which would therefore fulfil our ambition.

So thank you for that. Supporting positively and vocally shows ambition as supporters.

I suggest you use your ambition in the right manner instead of spewing negativity on each and every opportunity.
  • John  - I have every right to my opinion ml.
    avatar
I have every right to my opinion ml, and if i believe AW is now a negative for Arsenal , i will "spew negativity" re Arsene, his tactics, delusions etc etc . If things change that satisfy me ml (not you), then i will spew over the top positivity that will keep us both happy. If my comments are too negative for you ml, then the problem lies with you not me.

Agree to all your points dude..........and the bit about Mourinho - I'd say he is the most over-rated guy going around in football at the moment. Has he ever built a team??? Has he ever stayed longer than 3years at a club?? All he does is - go to a club - shop for top class players - win a couple of trophies and move out before the pressure to sustain the success comes in................Basically he is not a long term manager and I guess will never be. So it is just laughable when people compare 'visionaries' like Wenger to Mourinho. He ain't in the same league at all....
  • Podge
    avatar
Ha love how you dismiss a respected source like Deloitte after just using the DailyMail as a source to back up your argument and seriously you call it showing ambition when you all you do is criticize and offer no effective solution to any of Arsenal's problems. Dann and Mertesacker would be goo signings? why exactly? tell us the qualities they have which would help Arsenal and explain why the weaknesses they have wouldn't harm the current Arsenal team more than they could potentially help.
I do think they are very good defenders but I'm not entirely convinced they would be good signings for Arsenal. Dann is poor in possession and is unfamiliar with a high line defense, while he looks good for Birmingham he could be a liability for Arsenal. Mertesacker is very tall! that is his quality. He is not particularly strong despite his height and has been regularly out-muscled by players under 6'0". He is painfully slow and would never catch Odemwingie or Hernandez if they were chasing a through ball. His ball skills and passing are also questionable.
Can you offer a counter argument to that? or just an insult toward me or Arsene Wenger?

Anyway, i also agree that the daily mail is a rag, it was on an arsenal blog that i seen it, and i was just quoting what Arsene said. If your not convinced they would be good signings, who would be good defensive signings . Enrique on way to liverpool would have been a good signing, and not expensive.

Sad to say, but the truth is "The Emperor has no clothes". Mr Wenger time has come and gone. He has had his chance, bring in a manager who wants to win the PL. Not someone content to finish 4th, or 6th this season (as I predict)
Even if AFC signed Cahill, Messi, Ronaldo, Torres they still would'nt win under Wenger. They would reach the CL final, but lose on penos. This is Wengers last season in charge- AFC will not win anything, would'nt even make the CL, I predict Udinese will knock them out. Sorry Gooners, the club like the riots in London, there is a huge problem in Arsenal. Getting rid of Wenger will be the start of the solution though. Good luck this season. 6th in the league, maybe a Europa cup semi final will be the highlights.
