My Vision

Written by Wenger Boy on Wednesday, 17 August 2011 14:43

I want signings. Yes, I do.

I want big, fat, shiny, presented in a gold box, ‘Look who we’ve got now you bastards!’, bionic-limbed, world crushing signings. And plenty of ‘em.

So do you, I’m guessing.

I’m guessing you want dazzling, in your face, straight into the first team, ‘Cesc who?’, trained by Jesus, broke-the-mould-and-hand-crafted-a-new-one-just-to-smash-it-again, era defining signings. That’s understandable.

On this season’s evidence we need something along those lines more than ever. As has been pointed out, it’s fair to say, by nearly every Arsenal fan on this rocky, water-covered ball, our squad at the moment is clearly a) anorexic and b) riddled with injuries and this combination does not bode well for the immediate future. We’ve had parts one and two of our ‘MegaMonth’ (C) and unless something is sorted out soon I fear we won’t get to the end of it with smiley face emoticons still ‘lighting up’ our Twitter feeds.

But if we want signings that badly – a bunch of day jobbing outsiders with no real logical dependency on the club – imagine how much the actual players actually in the actual Arsenal squad want those signings. The correct answer is ‘OMGlikeSOOOOObadly!’, and we can only hope that Wenger answer those requests in due time. And time is absolutely and finally due in thirteen days. That’s 13 (t-h-i-r-t-e-e-n) days.

Why do our squad want and, indeed, need these signings so much? For three important reasons actually. Which I will now list. Below.

Quality

Arsenal primarily need signings to inject some much needed quality into the first team. Whatever your thoughts on our departures – and plenty were calling for Cesc and Nasri to be sold – losing two of your most influential players is going to leave a massive creative hole in your team. A hole that everyone in the squad can see and even stick their hand right through and look around the other side and see their hand. That’s not good for morale.

So what we need now is a bit fat plug. The time for Polyfilla has passed and the bare minimum is one or more players who are going to come in and fill that hole, and then some. In terms of existing players, an injection of quality will improve their confidence in the team, it will help them to score goals (or not concede) and win matches which will improve their confidence more. It will also take away some of the (especially creative) burden on them which will in turn decrease the pressure they feel. All massive positives with no hindrances whatsoever.

Injuries

I’m just going to come right out and say it: injuries are bastards. Injuries are bastards not only because they take one of your players out for a number of games but because the effect of a single injury is actually a lot larger than it seems. It can even be exponential. Which is a nice word to say but bad, bad thing for it to be.

If a player gets an injury then he is ruled out for X number of games. But the longer that is the longer he will take to get fit and on form once they return. So even if they are out for 10 games the effect may last 20 games or 30 games or even the whole season or further. Nightmare.

Meanwhile, while that player is injured another, probably less skilled, player takes his place. But instead of being rotated in and out to keep him fresh and fit he had to play every minute of every game and in doing so he gets tired, loses form and confidence and, eventually, gets injured from being overworked.

So now you have you two players in one position injured so you have to use a player from a different position to cover. They aren’t as adept in that position so they don’t do as well and lose confidence. As there is no-one to cover for them they again play too many games and the whole process repeats.

And while that is happening the first player realises that the squad needs them desperately and so is trying even harder to rush back from injury so they can help the team out. Cue injury part deux.

This is why it is vital to the entire squad that we have plentiful available cover in every position - some of which will be provided by those playing presently if quality new signings arrive. Knowing that there is adequate and decent quality cover is good for the squad because they again feel less pressure and know that they can be rested without worry for a game or two. They also feel less pressure to return from injury and the rest of the squad knows that they will do fine in their absence. Win/win/win/win/win/win situation.

Younger Talent

One thing we are not really short of is potential. We have a lot of young talent with a whole lot of potential and that is a fantasteriffic thing. So far so good.

But for all Wenger’s talk about ‘killing’ younger players with new signings nothing is going to kill them more than being thrust into important games when they are not ready to do so and playing badly. Not only will playing badly affect their confidence internally but with expectations at Arsenal higher than the uppermost box in a pile of boxes in God’s attic they are also likely to feel the scorn of a few thousand Arsenal fans which will in many ways be more damaging.

And if Arsenal aren’t winning then they won’t learn to win and they may become trapped in a cycle of mediocrity. Then we will have ‘killed’ a whole bunch of youngsters who in other circumstances may have turned into the world-beaters we all hope they will become.

Rather than ‘killing’  our young stars it is quite evident that new signings will in fact help them out in a number of easily understandable ways.

Firstly, players who we sign as starters will allow us to ease the younger talents into the team at a more steady and reasonable pace. Secondly, the team will hopefully win more games with new signings in the team and this will help to creative a positive atmosphere for the young ‘uns to develop in. Thirdly, kids learn from adults and quality signings will give them people to look up to, aiding the development of our mini-talents no end (think of all the ‘I learned so much being around Vieira/Bergkamp/Henry’ comments). Fourth, once those kids are all grown up and good enough to start they will find their route blocked by those same adults and will have to try even harder to get a place in the team – this is the essence of competition.

So, in the basicest of basic terms, signings are needed. Very soon. Not big names or big transfer fees but just big, big ‘quality’ – which is the Sesame Street word of the day for those who are interested.

Continuing the season for much longer without these signings would be a huge error but as I’ve been saying all day this need is now so glaringly obvious that I cannot possibly for even one tiny second believe that Wenger will leave it unaddressed.

We’ve had obvious problems before. Obvious problems that have been ignored. But this is run up to you from six miles away at the end of a straight country road on a clear summers day shouting your name over and over just to smack you right in the face with a large mallet shaped like the word ‘obvious’ obvious. And that’s pretty damn obvious.

Since I refuse to entertain the thought of anything else happening, I guess all that remains to be seen is which quality player(s) Wenger will bring in. With Liverpool, Udinese and Man U up next let’s just hope it gets sorted in time.

Print this out and stand outside Ivan & Wenger's office until they are forced to read it and when they have finished stuff it into their mouths and make them eat it so they really know we need new signings.

Not "like a new signing" but a real fully-operational-older-than-21-mega-straight-into-the-first-team- winning-mentality-hard-as-funk-signings.

i think we can expect signing after arsenal secure champion league spot. at the moment i'm not sure if any top class player wants to go to arsenal yet with champion league qualification still hangs in balance. i will be very surprise if wenger didn't buy anyone because we clearly lack quality and depth.

the spine of the team needs strenghtening a CB DM CM and a striker if RVP is out for a couple of months as per usual we will be very toothless how does wenger expect us to compete when all the teams around us are adding big signings and we keep adding kids who the moment they get a run in the team will fuck off to their hometown clubs of some billioaires latest plaything club. cop on wenger spend some money now.

You can add Reason # 4: Suspensions

Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has been hit with a three-match ban after admitting a charge of violent conduct following the Gunners' stormy clash with Newcastle United last weekend.

I don't think that signings depend on our qualifying for the Champions League proper. We are a huge club with a global fan base and any player worth his salt from any club around the world would agree to that.

Suarez & Carroll went to Liverpool when they were miles away from the Champions League. A big club can always attract signings. We have already signed a few youngsters(once again) but as rightly pointed out by Wenger boy in the superb article we do need some real quality signings and not young boys with a promising future.........

I the patience of the true gooners is gradually fading out all because Wenger is not ready to accept the really that there is no positive correlation between his normative and trophyiless ideologies and modern football. He claims to be very economical with his spendings but I think what he doing to our dear club is what is known in business as FALSE ECONOMY.
This squad a very young squad and play very good football on a good day, but we need matured and quality players to groom mentor them. The fact is we can't even play in Europe next season with the current squad,
We are still defensively weak. We cant rely on Squillaci and Johan Djorou back up for Verma and Kos. We need to get Cahill and use Kos as back up. We also need a LB
With our attacking midfield department we need an equally good player who can follow the good footprints of Fab.
Wenger knows all these but is unwilling to spend because of his pride and some stingy, selfish, inelastic and antiquated ideology. And he has the full support of the money-loving and normative minded board.
I believe if Wenger had spent an average of 30m per season we would not experienced those trophiless runs.
But I still believe that if Wenger spend an average of 15m each on 3 major and quality signings We would rule Europe for the next 5yrs. Mr Wenger please stop this selfishness and stinginess and add some quality to the squad and stop experimenting with dear club because we are accepting another shit this season

I genuinely think he will spend before the end of the window.

And if you don't care anymore, why does it make you sick? You most likely do care - as we all do - and you're just frustrated, which is completely understandable.

I don't think that Wenger's actions should ever kill your love for Arsenal however. It can kill your love for Wenger but Arsenal should always in your heart remain.

If anything, we should defo go for jan vertonghen, knows how to play CB with vermaelen because of international and time at ajax, and can fill in at DM and LB, basically 3 signings in one, and knowing wenger, there's no way we should miss this guy. And a couple more signings of course ;)

Whatcha guys keep moaning about, then? I guarantee Arsenal will surely be in the top 3 this season and may likely win the Premiership.
My observation is that the defence is impeccable. The forwards/Gerv can (and will) get behind ANY back four. At midfield, Song is the most underated player in the WORLD, Wilshere will be better then Cesc (and has a spine!) and once they gel, the lads will dominate any opposition except perhaps Barcelona - whom last I checked, don't play in the Premiership.
I really don't know what people are complaining about and frankly its $#%* me off! Your irrational fears say more about your lack of proper footballing analytical skills than about any deficit in the team. I KNOW we will win the league this year and I've put my money where my mouth is - 7,000 quid. I DARE YOU TO BET REAL MONEY AGAINST THE ARESENAL IF YOU FEEL OTHERWISE. Thats how you know a man. Enough with the hatin! Gunners4Life is what its about, nimrods.

I have every confidence in Arsenal to succeed but we do need to replace, at the very least, some of Cesc's creativity in the team. He is a huge loss in that respect and a quality playermaker would add so much to the squad and take the pressure of young Rambo's shoulders.

Absolutely loving the positivity though. More please.

Ryo/OX > Bendtner (not proper replacment Bent wasnt winger)
    Clichy > ?
    Fabregas ?
Denilson ?( maby we can count frimpong )

Ramsey/Rosicky were squad player so we cant count them as replacment for anyone.

Suarez knows he has a better shot at playing in the CL while playing for Pool than Ajax.If United had come for him at the same, there is no doubt which side he would have picked (provided the incentives were the same)
Caroll has the same motivation and given the circumstances under which Pool got him, it was clearly obviuos that Pool were the best choice.

even if wenger does end up signing a defender a midfielder and a striker we're worse off than last year. gervinho has failed to impress, he just doesn't seem good enough for our team, maybe he will improve, i don't know. same for chamakh, both seem very average players and the squad as a whole looks very average. there is quality here and there, but compare that to our first eleven last year. wenger has to work some real magic and bring real quality players. otherwise i'd be surprised to end up fourth or beat udinese, let alone win anything.

Realy ? last year we had 2 new CB for whole season. We had Wilsher for first year in EPL, we had Fabregas for 20-25 games only for the last 3 years. Nobady knew that Nasri will explode in the first part of the year so you cant say we had quality on the left side.
Now this year we have 2 weeks to sign more people. 2 quality EPL CB that work fantastic. Gibbs on left side who change the way our attack work on left something we all were looking from clichy and he didnt managed to do it. We have Wilsher with experience, and forming good partnehsip with Song who improved last year to. Ramsey is back to be quality backup, RVP is back in form, we got some nice wingers, our main problem last year was beating oponents on wrong foot an we got the pace to do it this year. Maby the team is not complit but we still have time to do it, and even if we dont, love this kids and i know they will do just fine, EPL title or not.

R u sure u watched the match? i mean Arsenal vs Udinese? I mean the one that was played on 16th Aug 2011? I mean the one which Arsenal won - Udinese nil?
Cese played quater of the seson and Nasri played half, he was a liability for the other half.
In Yesterday's match our defending was was top quality and Song played important part in defence TV and Knos were very strong(Top defenders). Remember the double save WS13 and Song made. Gerivino has always looked treatning, has loads of pace, great ball handling skills he can pass the ball better but remember its his first few matches. Cese/Jack were those those kids who were immature/inexperienced/physicall week bla bla bla bla bla... but performance was world class and you never know what Ryo/AoC/CarlJenkinson/Cambell have is store?
Agreed that Gibbs is injury prone but 130 minutes which he has played he has been top. Also i dont deny that we need some more players for the bench/Injury/ban whatever.

Top article, on the money. Can't muster any iota of excitement about potential signings given previous experience so will leave it there as far as that goes. Pleased with our defenders this season so far but up front it's all a familiar story. Am normally very optimistic about our chances but am honestly feeling quite resigned and despondent at the moment. Need something to change my mood and belief. Please.

Check youtube or RTE iplayer & listen to Liam Brady talk about how the board won't sanction big wages for the players Arsene wants to sign, and how thats proving to be an obsticle, it puts a different perspective on who we can and can buy.
  • richie  - re-write
    avatar
Last should of course read "can and can't buy".
  • richie  - Classification who controls purse strings?
    avatar
Read and check the above its not about the money for buys, its also about the board sanctioning the wages. The board say that those wages have to come from the ticket sales revenue, apparently the sales just about cover the wages of the players as things stand, so any big contract increase of the type Nasri wants aren't being sanctioned either by Kroenke or the board.

As a club we currently have the 5th highest debt in the prem, and a bit like our current national government the board and owners aren't interested in letting that debt get any higher, in fact they'd like it to see that debt considerably lower. Established players want outrageously large wages week in week out for playing the game they love, and to hear it from Liam Brady the board and Kroenke ain't interested in putting in their own money to cover those.

Apparently we have money to buy players but the problem comes when talking personal terms, because all the wages come from one budget, so unless ticket sales go up (which they can't coz they are all sold out) its only if ticket prices are increased that more money for wages will become available. 6% anyone?

I may be the odd one out here.

Our love of Arsenal the club is always far more important the any player, fan, director, journalist etc...
Wenger knows this. He knows that since the move, it is a 10 year project for him to create a club that will last the next 125 years. Trophies were always going to be less important. Other big clubs will fade and die on the way. Trust me. With new financial regulations, the Arsenal business model will rule the football world.
When we have bought the stadium through shrew finances, we will be able to splash out, through the money we generate, not because of some multibillionaire. The club paying off the new is the most important thing. Give it another 4 years... Trust me.
Have people forgotten that a club always goes through these phases... Remember the 17 years drought before success in the aerly 70s...?
Trust in Wenger he knows. Other clubs will fade and die... Not the Gunners.

ML, I was wondering why you didnt give your response to WB fine article. You were quick in responding to TL Gooner last week when he challenged Arsene. Do you agree or disagree with WB article? Or what is your opinion.
  • MeanLean
    avatar
    John,

The reason why I responded to TL Gooner's article is because it was a Your Vision article, which means that readers send in their own views and I always have an in article response to all Your Vision articles.

Wenger Boy is an Arsenal Vision writer, a top writer at that. I didn't have much in the way of time to respond yesterday as I was out until late.

You might expect me to say that everything is fine and that we do not need strengthening. I suspect that I have been pigeon holed as a blogger that refuses to see any problems with the team at any time.

My honest response to Wenger Boy's article? Spot on. I couldn't agree anymore.

Since the end of last season I have said that we need to add quality to the squad. I do not believe that the sky is falling in because we have a very good foundation but now that the creative heart of the team has been pulled out, we are going to have to replace that as well as adding strength in other areas of the pitch.

Personally I would like to see a left back as competition to Gibbs. A center back to replace Squillaci in the pecking order, a central attacking midfielder who makes chances for others and scores goals and another striker to replace the departing Bendtner to give competition to Van Persie.

I believe that Koscielny and Vermaelen should be our first choice partnership, because they will become a top force but once we lose one or two then we can look fragile. Kieran Gibbs would remain my first choice, really like the look of him but he cannot keep himself fit right now and I am not sure if Traore is defensively good enough as back up.

Ramsey has quality and will become one the best in the Premier League but I think he shouldn't be first choice just yet. He does not have the consistency and domination of games the way Wilshere has and lastly I would like to see a quick striker added to our quick front line.

I don't expect Arsene to share all my sentiments but I believe that he probably does with some of those points raised. Judging my Liam Brady's comments on RTE, Wenger has had his hands tied thus far by the board and he hasn't been able to get all his targets so far.

I suspect that the Cesc and Nasri money is a factor but I also believe that Arsenal as a club being so prudent is probably waiting to see if we qualify for the Champions League proper before handing over the larger briefcase of cash rather than the pocket sized one they have on standby.

While it is a worry that we are facing such a massively important qualifier without our squad fully assembled, I have absolutely 100% faith that we will see new players before the window is closed, Like I said earlier, the quality and cost of the player may well depend on our CL fate.
  • richie  - The Pot calls Kettle Black
    avatar
If I'm a clown you must be my foil the buffoon. I'm not the one who claims Arsene ain't got the money to buy, if you'd read what I said above you'd see that I'd said in fact I'm told he has got the money to buy players, but the problem is the board won't sanction the personal terms. They won't pay the wages because the wages come from the ticket sales budget, and that budget only has a certain amount in it, and the board members won't put their own money in to cover any short falls. Do you understand? Is it getting through?

Its not me that said it, its Liam Brady that said it! Remember him? He was a great Arsenal player, and he's now the head of youth development. He works at the club and you could easily call him an insider. He said it while being interviewed on TV (RTE channel) so its not me making it up or repeating what I read in a tabloid. Now just maybe you know more than Mr Brady? In which case tell us what you know.

    Thanks for replying ML.

I agree with alot you said, and yes i am surprised.
Imo Gibss should be 2nd choice to new lb as he is injury prone and is out of position too often. Kos and Verm are good and seem to gel together but good quality competition is needed to improve them even more.Same goes for Ramsey, and i agree attacking midfielder is a must. But i believe we need 2 not 1. Jack is class , but is too young to have so much responsibility on his shoulders. and it is obvious that RVP needs the competition. I dont go along with the money situation though, but i understand why you said it. Before the cesc and nasri saga Aw and Ivan said explicitly that there was enough money to spend and that was with the belief that cesc and nasri were staying. Now with the cesc and probable nasri money there is plenty to spend. However i do agree that the quality of the player we buy may depend on cl qualification, as top quality may not want to come. overall it has been badly mishandled ML as i believe Arsene overestimated his power of persusasion to keep cesc and nasri , never mind one of them.

    avatar
Surely all real Gooners should be on the same page. Doesn't everyone want us to buy some great players. Would I like to see some already great players arrive at my club?
    Is the pope a catholic?

IMHO we have just sold one of the best midfielders in the world in Cesc, would I have prefered he stayed? No! Because I only want players at my club who want to play for us. So while he continued to want to play for us great! When his heart was back at his home, let him go. He was great buisness bought for £2mil sold for £35mil. Now we need to move on.

Who could replace Cesc immediatly? Forget money matters for the moment. IMHO very few. Who would I love to see at Arsenal? Sneider! Why? well because only Sneider & Xavi are possibly better playmakers than Cesc. Its never going to happen of course because realistically we can't afford him but we can all dream.

Next up on my wish list if money was no object, we could certainly do with another CD or a proper British style Center Half. If I could buy a defender that would suit our style of play it would be AC Milan's Brazilian Thiago Silva, he's got everything, and I believe he's in the list of top 10 defenders in the world.

Finally IMHO RvP is in the top 10 strikers in the world and the recent arrival at Man City Aguero would've been my choice of who I would've liked to see partner him.

Now I know all the above are fantacy football choices and therefore unrealistic but when we call for signings that are better than what we've got these are the type of next step up. There are players from £5-15mil (plus paying their own personal terms) then there are the big already established boys that are £30+(Plus their wages which are a lot more than £5-15mil buys). So when those call for big buys of established players check our finances.

Interesting to note Manu'er selling shares in Singapore? With them so far in debt they wouldn't dare float shares on their home stock exchange. They lost a fortune last season and without another Ronaldo to sell they need funds to continue.

Look Richie, I believe it is Arsene that has the boards hands tied not the other way around because of his dithering. LB is just defending Arsene.

Typical A.K.B.'s. This blog article is telling us nothing we realists don't already know, and have been shouting from the rooftops for at least the last couple of seasons. Yet here we have Wenger Boy * ( * at least he doesn' t hide his devotion ) proclaiming the revelation that we are 1) short on quality ( how did he work that out ? ), 2) need cover for injuries ( what, US !!? ), and 3) have too many kids ( who would have thought ? ).
Wake up A.K.B.'s. These things are yesterday's news. The question is what is your Great Leader doing about them ? Sweet F.A. from what most of us can see. By the way, how do you feel about our club's image being downgraded from big to average ? Are you not embarassed by that ? You should be.....

.“Imagine the worst situation — we lose Fabregas and Nasri — you cannot convince people you are ambitious after that,” said Wenger. “The message we give out is important. For example, you see about Fabregas leaving, Nasri leaving. If you give that message out you cannot pretend you are a big club. "

And did he mention we're not ambitious ? That's something else we already knew.

Man United Killa, ( and others with open minds ) - If you want a truly accurate perspective of all things Arsenal, I suggest you pay a visit to the "Arsenal Truth" blogsite. It really lives up to its name. One of the most honest, insightful, and candid blogs around. Highly recommended.

Then somehow you know more than the rest of us about Arsene dithering? Where do you get your info? Because if the info comes from insiders I think its more credible than if it comes from Jurno's like the mail's Martin Samuels or 5 live pundits.

Feeno - It shouldn't be hard to recognise you at the match.. You'll be sitting on Wenger's lap, whispering sweet nothings in his ear, and if you're really good, he might let you nibble on it. Ain' t true love grand ?

what is your ambition spectrum - to live your life through other peoples achivements, what kind of way is that to live your life?

do you not have enough going on in your own life that you must have other people win things for you, are you that much of a loser???

I could quote responses to every single "point" you raise but what the point in that, exercise in futility.

John - Yes, mate. Richie thinks we don't have any problems at Arsenal. The media are making it all up. Every journalist in the land has a personal grudge against the club. The blog writers all have it in for us. No-one can be believed, unless of course, it's the likes of Gary Neville speaking for instance, then the conspiracy is conveniently forgotten for an hour or so.
They're all out to get us ! Check your phone richie, you never know who might be listening.

    avatar
so you agree the journos and blogs have it in for us but its Arsene's fault, Spectrum just said that it wasnt happening.

Arsenal are an easy target, they hate us for winning, the hate us for upseting the favourites, the years for bad mouthing have created a facade of negativity and all your doing Spectrum is playing off that which is there. When someone like Roy Hodgson an absoulte gentleman speaks and speaks highly of us and what WE are trying to achieve best believe you listen, although you probably gave more creedence to a fat waste of space in david o leary trying his hardest to get in with the sky rhetoric. They want stories to report on and the want to keep the dissidents down.

How you think you can ignore that this goes on, and call other peole closed minded or blind or head in the sand is the most laughable part of it, but i think we've established allready you know exactly waht you're doing

feeno - If they're firing bullets at us, it's because we're providing them with plenty of ammunition to do so. Look how the Fabregas farce has been allowed to drag on for two whole seasons. Shouldn't they be allowed to comment on that ? They wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't. Are you expecting them to applaud us for the way we handled it ?
The lack of transfer activity is an invitation for criticism. Or don't you think that's fair game ? Wenger refuses to replace Almunia, neglects to buy or even LOAN cover for Van Persie when he inevitably got injured, no defensive cover for Vermaelen ? And the media aren't allowed to comment ?
If you want your news sanitised and spoon fed to you with loving care, go to Arsenal.com

So why not stay on a site where you can slag off the club you claim to support and where you like the views of the other blogers and leave us in peace? Why come on here and try to influence us to join another blogs? You always seem to have an agenda against our club. I have read your posts and you criticise the owners the board the manager and the players. I think if you slag off the stadium. There would be nothing left for you to like about the Arsenal. Why support our club?

Your having a laugh! We paid Barcelona £2Mil had Fabregas for 8 years and then sold him back to the only club he'd accept to go back to for £35mil - If thats not a great bit of buisness I don't know what is?

    Thank you.

Yes fans grumble in the pub and at the Emirates. But I here so many saying they are happy Wenger does not splash out and that he does not pay £200,000/week wages AND that they are extremely happy that the club is in such a strong financial position.

Again, many BIG clubs will fade and die in the next few years...

    TRUST IN WENGER.
  • Mohammed Ali  - Worrying
    avatar
Do you what is worrying.. that some 'fans' seem to want to love a new £50m player and trophies MORE than the club.

If Arsene sells 50 players he has nurtured over 10 years to help buy the stadium complete, so that we exist for the next 125 years, which he seems to be doing..... then he is a genius of titanic proprtions.

He could well be the greatest man the club ever had.

Name any manager of a global power like Arsenal, that MAKES money nearly every year.

The debt the club will have to Arsene will truly be realised in 20, 50 and 100 years...
