My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Saturday, 27 August 2011 14:05

Good afternoon Gooners,

Quick blog today as news has filtered through of Arsenal pinching Monaco's Park Chu Young from under the noses of Lille. According to rumours the Korean forward vanished from the Lille hotel after undergoing a first medical for the French club. I have no idea how true this is because false rumours spread equally as fast as correct ones. Apparently we have agreed a £2.7m fee for the striker and he is now on his way to London for a medical.

I wonder how many people saw this one coming. There I was fully expecting Kevin Doyle to walk through the Emirates doors. I kid, I kid but after some intensive scouting and reporting from the Arsenal Vision team (You Tube) we can exclusively inform you that he looks technically very good, quick and intelligent.

I would imagine that he will be more of a Bendtner replacement. A goal down with fifteen minutes to go, replace Aaron Ramsey for Park Chu Young and slot Van Persie back as his number 10 suggests. Another option for the boss. Joel Campbell will be another choice should he obtain his work permit to stay and work in England.

I hope he does manage to secure it but I wonder if we will be lucky twice in a row. Not that luck should have anything to do with it you see.

Joel Campbell is somewhat of an unknown quantity at this moment in time but from the little bits and pieces that I have seen of him, he could well be a useful outlet from the bench in the short term. Quick, technical and a good finisher.

I am loving the injection of pace that Arsene has erm.. injected into this squad. It is like he is reverting a little bit back to 1997/1998.

Allow the opposition to wonder into midfield while the likes of Wilshere, Song and company lie in the long grass. Snap, we pounce and play quick forward passes to our collection of greyhounds. Gervinho, Walcott, Campbell, Ryo, Chamberlain or 'Chamba-lin' as the boss calls him.

I can see many a goal being scored like that this season mark me words.

So what on earth was all that hoo-har about a bid for Gary Cahill? This has caused quite the stir amongst both the Bolton and Arsenal support.

He has a £17m price tag slapped around his head so why are we putting in a bid £11m short.

In my eyes it is quite black and white really, it is quite simple. The price tag set by Bolton is not Cahill's real valuation. It is Bolton trying to get as much money as possible from their asset of whom they haven't been able to secure for a long contract. They are in the position where they could see one of their best players walk for free. You can be sure that Bolton have offered Cahill several new contracts which I assume he has turned down.

We know exactly how this feels as Samir Nasri has walked out the door in very much the same circumstances.

Bolton Wanderers have from now until 1st September to sell a player who wants to make the step up in his career. If they don't then either he walks away for free next summer or he leaves in January for even less than we are offering now.

The Arsenal board would not be doing their jobs if they didn't negotiate a deal. Start off low and meet somewhere in the middle is often the simple way of explaining two clubs negotiating.

In my opinion Gary Cahill is not a do or die situation. Now if we had a chance to buy Eden Hazard who had four years on his contract for £17m and we offered £4.5m then I would be pulling my hair out.

I may be wrong but I really believe and rightly so in my opinion that Wenger see's Koscielny and Vermaelen as his first choice partnership. He wants those two to develop an understanding and remain at the heart of our defence for many years to come. A player in the mould of Cahill, Jagielka would compliment those two and cover for injuries, suspensions and games against the usual. I don't need to explain what teams I am talking about.

I don't believe that Arsene and the board would pay £15m-£17m for a third choice central defender to fight it out alongside Djourou for a place in our first team. This isn't to say that we do not need this type of player, we do. Look at our situation today, both Vermaelen and Koscielny are fighting to be fit and we are only a few games into the new season. We need cover but not £20m worth of cover.

Our bid could also reflect the interest in Cahill from other clubs. Chelsea and Manchester City are yet to make any moves and with the money behind them, you would have thought that they would have already bought him if they really wanted him Manchester United have young center backs coming out of their ears and Tottenham are, well. Tottenham.

Perhaps Arsene has already spoken to Cahill privately as we did with Gervinho. Gervinho wanted to come to Arsenal and only Arsenal and from that we had Lille by the balls. Gervinho also had only one year on his deal and he wanted to come to us. So they could not dictate the fee, we could. And we offered a price that we thought was fair for his abilities. After watching him jinking inside and out of the full back on Wednesday, that fee looks an absolute steal, especially when compared to someone like Stewart Downing.

Lille were asking for closer to the £20m mark, should we have just paid them that money from the start? Of course not, so why should we do that with Cahill?

If the Cahill situation is similar then it will come down to deadline day and Bolton will have to blink first. £8m in hardcore cash along with a possible sell on clause or let him walk for zilch in the summer. We haven't said £6m or leave it, we are starting our negotiations. I am sure that is just normal in any business between two companies.

Believe it or not, we are actually in a much better position when it comes to center backs this season than the last. Last season at this stage we had Koscielny, Djourou and Squillaci. This time round we can replace Squillaci with Vermaelen. I do not have to spell out what a difference that makes to our squad in every possible way. Our young back up's are also a year wiser and more experienced. Not only that but Jenkinson has also played as a center back in the past so I am not sure that we are piss poor in that area, just a case of adding strength to the squad. Well, that is how I see it anyway.

Last night rumours were floating around that Eden Hazard would be on his way to Arsenal after the clubs agreed a fee. This was only rumours coming out of France. The Lille management has also said that Hazard will not be going anywhere this summer so I have taken a distance with the story for the most part. Until last night when I lay on my pillow and imagined Hazard playing in Cesc's position, floating around the pitch changing places with Van Persie, Gervinho and Walcott in a weird circular rotational funky groove. I got a little carried away with it and started getting sucked into the 'Bring me Hazard' feelings.

I have slapped my face a couple of times and splashed water continuously on my face and I am back. Push that's stuff far away from you, it is seriously not healthy. I just cannot see a deal like this being done for too many reasons but in the words of Keegan 'I would luv it...'

Mr Park looks agile and mobile....as a winger. His dismal 12 goals last season (his best by the way) twinned with 0 assists make this look like a very poor buy indeed and one perhaps more aimed at shirt sales and merchandising in Asia than in getting us what we need- 1 20 goal a season man!
  • afc14  - Not part of aw's chosen 3?
    avatar
If it's true this guy will cost £3 mil and is NOT the 3 players Wenger said he wanted to add but a bargin extra then this could be ok. If it is and he thinks this guy will be the Hazard/M'villa style "marque" signing we need then its not looking good. But if they where they cannon with pride i hope he does well. Just fingers crossed there are better players to come before Weds
  • Rob  - assists

Just because he made 0 assists doesn't mean he isn't good. His team mates could just be shit and not be able to finish (as shown in video 1) therefore making his assists statistic 0 :)

I really think people should wait and see how he fits into Arsenal before writing him off. Writing people off seems to be the norm for us Gooners these days.

Remember when Vermaelen came to the club. I read many times that we didn't need that little midget in defence. Bring in Hangeland or whatever.

    Don't jump the gun.

So we have signed 2 strikers this summer for a total cost of around 3.5m.

We're going to get over 70m for all departures this season.

I'm interested that you're still quoting 6m for Cahill. I know this blog is pretty well balanced, so I'm surprised you're still quoting that when Wenger has rubbished it. Of course our offer must have been low, but let's at least back the manager occasionally.

Getting 20+ goals for a season largely depends on what team you're in. Adebayor wasn't anywhere near Henry, but he banged in 30 in a season.

    Jagielka would provide cover?

Take the rose tints off! Koscielny is nowhere near as good as Cahill or Jagielka otherwise you wouldn't be looking.

If you are content with Vermaelen and Koscielny then look forward to the 15 years of Champions League football to end.

With Vermaelen's injury record you will be relying on Djouru and Squillaci.

Meanwhile Man U have Ferdinand (their Vermaelen), Vidic, Jones, Smalling and Evans (their Squilaci). You need a Jagielka or Cahill and you need to replace Nasri and Fabregas. Wilshire and Ramsey won't be able to do it alone. Not sure how a 2.7m 26 year old from the French second division will make much difference.

Spend some of that money Gooners

12 goals in a team who get relegated isnt bad and he seems like a great signing if he costs less than 3million

Look, I don't care if this Korean is any god or what, but this is what Wenger complaining all the time, signing quality players doesn't mean you have to pay big fees.

And if he thinks this so-called Samsung superstar to be better than Bendtner, I'm afraid, we'll be having a torrid time this season.

Poor Arsenal Fans, now I know who's lying regarding the Cahill saga, and this proof's that Wenger won't be signing a marque signing soon. It;ll be only more and more fringe, poor players from Ligue 1 - cause I Wenger's mind, that is the only league in the world that will entertain his desire to bring his so-called superstars.

If you guys just want a manager who goes and spends money on players only based on their reputation then stick to playing Football Manager... I won't question Arsene's judgement on the quality of the players he signs

(I'd question tactics though sometimes) but from what I'm seeing, he's only worth so little because he was playing for France.

If he were playing in England (with all the Cash Cow clubs in the market) he'd easily be worth at least 20m+

I perfectly agree with Weger on his idea to sign after watching his free kicks, goal scoring ability and his special killer passes. In fact I would be extremely happy to see him at the emirates as back up for RVP and if possible partner him in the starting line up. I don't care about the fees because I can see he has the quality and can play the arsenal way.

What we need an equally good center back like TV5 in our defensive set up and I think Cahill is the only option.
What I don't understand is why Wenger is not in a hurry to sign him. The fact is we don't just need reinforcement in our squad but more importantly we need a quality center back to partner TV5 so that we can use Kos as back up. Objectively, Kos is a very good player but he lacks in the physical and aerial demands of the premiership, so I would slightly rate Cahill over him.

Cahill looks physically excellent and is OK with aerial situations so i still don't understand why Wenger is unwilling to sign him at 17m which in my opinion is normal looking at the fact that he is English and is more experienced in the premiership. Also looking at the fact that our squad is very injury prone I think Cahill and kos could take the central defensive role while TV5 shifts to the left back position when injuries inevitably starts striking our defense.

I would also advocate for a new and equally good creative midfielder like Cesc to take the CAM role. In our game against Newcastle United, L'pool and Udenise, we were lacking in that aspect of the game. In fact our inabiltity to keep possesion, especially in the midfield for over 1m like we have been doing shows that we need at least one creative midfielder who is better and can give defense splitting passes like Cesc.

Getting both Cahill and Hazard at 15m each into our young squad will guarantee us not just the premier league title but also the Uefa Champions league title.

Please Papa Wenger, do us a favor by getting Cahill and Harzard to the emirates before the window closes. We cant go through another trophiless season, we have had enough of your stinginess.

Lets welcome to the emirate stadium Park Chu Young and wish him a wonderful season full of goals.

    Gents,
I have no problem with his 'cheap' cost and I think he is skilful and mobile BUT I stand by my earlier comments because Park is NOT the best we could be getting , just the best deal. That should not be acceptable at the moment – we have sold two of our best players and needed to strengthen last years squad, which is now actually weaker.
I dont want Wenger to spend gazillions, but am watching Juan Matas debut for the blue scum and he is electric, – just what we need and COULD have afforded.
NO MORE BARGAIN BASEMENT DEALS – FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST PLEASE BUY THE BEST WE CAN AFFORD, NOT JUST THE BEST DISCOUNTED DEAL!!!!!

    avatar
There is no issue with the signing in and of itself, he isa captain. THe problem is that most people where hearing news about eden hazard, so in one night to move from eden hazard to park chu young, is just a shocker. Also Wenger seems to want versitile strikers or front 3's and he is loyal. SO he wont throw away chamakh after pursuing him, and bendtner is not versitile enough to play on the right. So he can sack chamakh(loyalty) and instead of having 3 targetmen, he opt to relase bendtner and sign a more mobile striker with experience. In FM we would just sell chamakh and keep bendner and just purcahse park to play on the right left or centre.

I heard from liam brady that wenger is prepared to pay a high price and wages but the board wont allow him to give a player top-top wages so he has to look at cheaper options. They dont mind payin the transfer fee

BTW he said it on the irish version of match of the day

Basically its the board messin up Wengers transfer activities

I heard he doesnt think Cahill is a great as everyone think and there are better option but because of the board restritcions he cant pay the necessary wages

Wenger has really lost it this time. The guy scored 3 goals less than Gerv. And we pay 3mil.
You are pathetic for thinking you know anything about football.
  • Iain
    avatar
    Chris,

No idea who if its Wenger you are sniping at but perhaps a more introspective glance in the direction of a mirror when you are posting insults. Indeed Gervinho only scored 15 last year, so thus your illiteration that Park scored only 3 less last season was correct- however if you 'knew anything about football' then perhaps you may have noticed that Gervinho also accrued 10 assists last year, clearly displaying his attacking and passing ability - Mr Park had 0 assists last year but at 3 million is probably excellent business.

My point however is that is bargain basement and not where we should be shopping at all- I would have been far happier if Wenger had splashed another 10-12mill and bought a proven 25-30 goal a season man like Papiss Cisse of Freiburg or Moussa Sow of Lille.

You are very wrong. Those two can't even get in their national team or hold a place there. They are not that good especially not Jag. Those players won't cut it in europe. Kos is better he reads the game better. He Just started playing for a major club and got his first international call up. The reason our defenders look crap is because they get no protection or help from the midfield. Any team in the world defense will concede stupid goals if they keep being put under pressure, even barcelona. Most Gunner fans are so short sighted sometimes and won't even appreciate their own players.

    avatar
Hi Arsenal fans have you lost your minds? 17m for Cahill? You must be kidding? Let's see how people conduct business of negociations before we talk about the real value of Cahill.

When 2 businesses negociate it's known that everyone come to negotiations table with his ideas about he has to pay which is usually very different from the other side's valuation otherwise we wouldn't be talking about negociations. So it's normal that both valuation are exagerated. Supposing Arsenal offered 6ml, although I believe Arsene who rubbished that figure, as starting bid that doesn't mean that the amount is real it is just a technique to freak out the other side so they think hard about their valuation and how hard the negociation would be. So the real value somewhere in between 6-17ml value.

From purely business perspective the 17ml price tage that bolton put on the player is outrageous, why? first, because of the amortisation. Cahill was valued like that 2 or 3 years which means it's the real starting value. If we depreciate that by 20% year, 20% final year then we come to about 40% less than the original value of 17ml which means about 10ml roughly.

Therefore, we can see that Arsenal starting bid is low but logical as you usully negotiators start about 40% less than what they prepared to pay.

I want to ask my dear Arsenal fans why do we always overrate the players that we're negociating hard for and underrate the players we have? Everybody's keeping that Koscielney is rubbish and that Cahill is millions better and blah blah. I've never seen Cahill play and I don't know if he's better than Koscielney, but I know that Koscielney is good and he wasn't the only reason we conceded all those goals. We had weakest goal keeper, most injured back two, players missing from DM and all that.

Secondly, it's not fair to compare Arsenal defence with Bolton defence; Arsenal's part of a very attack minded team and one that sometimes play tippy-tappy football with no end product and in result the defence so often was caught in coutre-attack situations which is hard to defend no matter how good individual defenders are. on the other hand we have Bolton who have 10 men parking in front of the goal and helping out defenders. So it's natural that defenders in such team will look more brilliant than they really are. Same think can be said when comparing strikers as big team strikers have always more opportunities to score than the ones that play in small teams.

Also, Cahill is better in the air therefore better than Koscielney is a false argument. Great defending is not all about aerial defending, it's collection of skills that include: takling, one-on-one, passing forward, organising, positioning. So you can only claim that Cahill is better than Koscielney in most of those therefore better overall.

Then it's not all up to us to judge who's better than who, it's Wenger and his coaching staff decision. If they thought he's better than Koscielney they would have bought him for a higher fee.

the thing is that Arsenal fans are being manipulated by hostile and biased media corp who wants to believe that Arsenal is the only team that has weaknesses in every position.

I always see the media overrating players they believe we're interested in while they undervalue our own players. and what do Arsenal fans do: believe them?

Anyone who says 'In Wenger we rust' simply cannot be an Arsenal fan.

The honours, the financial shrewdness, the ability to develop so many players (see track record!).

Remember all those years ago when he let Anelka go for 25mill and we got training facilities. That 25 mill is now worth 200 mill to the club. Think about it.

Yes, we could possibly do with 1/2 world class defenders, but we should never have to pay £40/50 mill. Let other clubs do it if they want, not us, and in 4 years we will OWN the stadium outright.

For what Wenger has done for Arsenal, he deserves 25 years of loyalty. COS I KNOW I WILL BE A GUNNER IN 25 YEARS EVEN IF WE WIN NO TROPHIES.

The bright note of the United game was that Yer Jokin'son has been suspended for a match. Starkly contrast his $1m transfer with Ashley Young's, and we see a serious problem with Gazides and our transfers.

I watched Joel Campbell play in the u20's wc, and to be honest he was fairly crap. Chamberlain's debut was pretty ordinary, he seemed clumsy at best.

Traore looked lead-footed and definitely not a pace signing.

If this guy was any good, Monaco won't have been relegated. Hello??!! Monaco relegated! Get it? A not-so-long-ago Champions League Finalist.

Make no mistake - we will be fighting out relegation this season. Arsenal is making history for all the wrong reasons. Biggest defeat since 1896?? More than 100 years ago?? Well done Arsenal!

Only Arsenal can implode like they did exactly. Rival clubs couldn't be happier because they din so much lay a finger on us to make us go down.

The ultimate warfare: Let your enemy kill himself.

    Go Arsssssenal!

Agree with Savage: Adebayor hit 30 goals in all competitions during the 07-08 season. Ok, 6 of them were against Derby County, arguably the worst Premier League team ever but you get the point!
