My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Friday, 30 September 2011 14:44

Good afternoon Gooners,

It is another sunny day in north London this late September which is all rather strange. This time I have come prepared, I am sporting a T-shirt instead of the thick, long sleeved top that I had on yesterday. Nobody informed me that it would be Caribbean weather so close to October. I wasn't at all impressed whilst melting on a bus during rush hour.

There isn't much in the way of substantial Arsenal news today, most of the focus is on the NLD on the Sunday, a game that is filling me with nerves, but that is nothing new. The north London derby always gives you that little extra emotion, those few extra butterflies in the pit of your stomach. It is the only thing that Tottenham hope to win every year and that just makes it all the worse. It is going to be a tough one but it is great to see us being written off by so many, that should prevent our second biggest nemesis after injuries. Complacency.

I am sure you don't want to hear about fresh starts and new beginnings etc, so I won't venture down that particular road but I do want to take you to a similar location if you don't mind.

There is no need to waste anyone's time with talk of our transfer business or timing, everyone know's how that went and the effect it has had on our start of this season, this for me is the reason why we are currently being viewed as a crisis club, it is why we are at the wrong end of the league and it is why we have had to deal with some rather embarrassing moments this season so far.

However this squad is nowhere as bad as our early season results have made out. The Arsenal laundry room are still trying to iron out long standing creases but there is plenty that is not only good but very good about our squad. The three victories on the bounce have come at a very good time for us, momentum and confidence are vital to a team who are aspiring for success, hopefully those two ingredients are mounting up nicely but I believe that the three victories could be bettered in one swoop of a 90 minutes at White Hart Lane.

I have felt for some time that Arsene Wenger's teams usually gain confidence from performance rather than results, given that our game is based on combinations, confidence and momentum. We would probably get more out of one 5-2 victory than three 1-0 wins.

A victory and good performance at the Lane could be massive, especially considering that we should have Thomas Vermaelen and Abou Diaby back ready for selection quite soon. Even if Vermaelen's return has been put back a couple of weeks. That would mean our squad would be only missing one player, yes a very important player but only one player in Jack Wilshere.

This is assuming that we can get through a) the derby at Spurs and b) the International break without further set backs. Which come to think of it may well be a big ask but the point is that the team are finally starting to gel, starting to string results together and we still have some big players to come back.

I don't need to tell you how important Tommy V is to our side, so I won't but I am really crossing my fingers over the fitness of Abou Diaby. There is an obvious split in the Arsenal supporting world about the influence of the Frenchman in an Arsenal shirt but I tell you what, I am massively in the for camp. We haven't seen Abou Diaby at his best for a good few years now and it is easy to understand why many fans are unhappy that he is part of our squad and has often been unavailable for selection. When he has been fit, he has only managed to last a few games before breaking down again. I believe that it is this reason why so many have their knives out for him.

What Abou Diaby needs is what every player in world football need and that is a run of games without tweaks, without strains and without disgusting ankle attacks. I cannot quite remember if it was his last long run of games together but in our emphatic home victory against Porto he was in the middle of a long run in the team, he had been playing a more withdrawn midfield role alongside Alex Song, probably the early stages of the 4-2-3-1 formation that Jack Wilshere took over from at the start of last season. I was at the Emirates watching the pair of them (Song & Diaby) and they were remarkable as they were for pretty much all of their time together during that run.

With the departure of Fabregas, the midfield has reverted a little bit back to the 4-3-3 in which all three central midfielders have to share out the defensive and offensive work load, plenty of talking on the job, players covering shifts for each other at late notice etc.

If Abou Diaby can get down the motorway without cutting out then that 4-3-3 system suits every aspect of his game. The reason why I have hope after yet another injury is because, this time we are attempting to rectify his injury problems and not just waiting for a calf strain to heal or resting a hamstring. He had an ankle operation at the start of the season and who knows how that will turn out. I can remember as clear as day, the amount of comments and articles that I have read suggesting that we should offload van Persie because of his injury problems. How he is purely a luxury player who had no place in our squad. If blogger's were running Arsenal then Huntelaar would be wearing the number 10 shirt today instead of van Persie who has just notched up his 100th goal for the Gunners.

If we can keep Diaby on the pitch and away from the treatment table then I bet my bottom dollar that I will be saying similar things about Diaby by the end of the season. Once he has games tucked away under his belt, he can score goals from crosses, he can score from distance, turn defence into attack, beats players without trying and wins a high number of duels.

The injured Diaby is no use to Arsenal, I agree. But if his surgery is a success and it solves his long standing issues then Abou Diaby can be a vital cog to this new Arsenal team. Especially with Wilshere out until late this season. I really want to see a trio of Song - Diaby - Arteta.

With the Frenchman expected to return after the International break, I may well get my wish.

I started the article on my train journey saying that there wasn't much in the way of news but it turns out that upon my travels, Manuel Almunia has completed a move to West Ham. God only knows why such a move didn't take place during the summer weeks but hey. I wish him all the best and hope he finds his best form again. It seems fashionable to hate a player from your squad if he under performs, I don't quite get it myself. A fabulous shot stopper for the most part but never quite got the hang of the whole balls in the box thing, well at least consistently.

Stan Kroenke has finally spoken after all this time. The interview with the Telegraph is well worth a butchers.

Arsene has had his press conference but I haven't heard it as yet and do not have the time to tune in yet. I will mention it tomorrow in the blog.

Enjoy your afternoon/morning/evening depending on where you are in the world.

Deluded!! TV has had an injury setback surprise there not

Diaby is awful mainly barring the odd cameo with an incredible injury record. If you really believe he will be our saviour then u are drinking AW's wine my friend

Can't see us getting better than a point at the Lane but fear a spanking

We need to realise we are mid table at best until 2013/4 when financial fair play and youth prospects mature hopefully

Can we keep Jack W happy until then ?

We need to keep supporting at match days but your blind optimism is bizarre

Abou Diaby is a fantastic player, and I'm so glad that he's playing for Arsenal, rather than another team.

Make no mistake, if Diaby had been playing for Utd, Chelsea etc, the "Wingnut" section of the Arsenal fan base would be wetting themselves with envy. Part of their problem is that they simply don't appreciate what they have in front of them.

Diaby is a special player who hasn't even reached his peak yet. He can be as good as he wants to be, subject to him not being assaulted on the pitch by the Barton's and Essien's of the football world.

I look forward to seeing Diaby return to the first team squad after the international break.

I think that once he's fit and available for selection, Arsene will automatically return him to our midfield, alongside Song, plus one other player.

Well about the NLD, I'm optimistic that Arsenal will get sth better than a draw. This was how I felt as regards the Udeneise game and we won.
Guys, Diaby is a very good player believe it or not. I just wish him a good spell after this time out though I don't know where he'll fit in in the squad. (spare my head pls)

    Willy young,

Saviour? Where did I mention that? Did you even read the article?

'Diaby is awful mainly barring the odd cameo '

I guess you didn't want to get into the part about injuries and needing games because it goes against your agenda.

    'your blind optimism is bizarre'

Ah, there I was thinking that supporting your team and enjoying my club was the norm.

What is this support thing you speak of? That cannot be a good thing surely.

'if Diaby had been playing for Utd, Chelsea etc, the "Wingnut" section of the Arsenal fan base would be wetting themselves with envy'

100% agree with that. Every Manchester United player or Chelsea player is fantastic while Arsenal have nothing whatsoever.

I also agree that when Diaby is fully fit and sharp then he goes straight into our midfield. That has pretty much always been the case.

    Kay,

I think with Wilshere out, a fit Diaby would be an automatic starter unless Ramsey can really raise his game.

He is a big game player as well. He was dominating Chelsea so much that Essien had to take him out.
  • Podge

Wrote an article in the summer saying how Wilshere was doomed to miss a big part of the season and how Diaby could step into the breach and realise his potential.Sadly Wilshere has been ruled out until January  and Diaby has been recovering from surgery but he is due back soon and we hope his injury hell is over. We need as many players as possible fit and firing, we have serious ground to make up and a convincing win on Sunday would be a huge help.

Cesc is gone and we are still using the formation that was built around him for the most part. We have similar players to Cesc in Arteta,Ramsey and Rosicky none of the are as good as Cesc so we should be putting more focus on RVP as the fulcrum of the team or become more team orientated and share out the creative burden it made the team so much better for a season when Henry left. Great Arsenal teams under Wenger have never been built around one player but a team dynamic.Let's hope we can get back to that.

Given what this derby means to Arsenal supporters, not just the occasion itself, but in the context of how our season progresses from here, I take it we can expect Wenger to resign should we fail to win ?
Not only is our honour at stake, but the three points from a win will at least keep us from falling even further behind the leaders. We should demand nothing less. Failure is not an option, Wenger. You’re on notice. ( Though not from Mean Lean, I suppose ).

What you doing on here? We haven't lost a game yet. I was wondering where you have been recently and it came to me. We won our last three games so you disappear.

Did you enjoy hearing the crowd signing 'One Arsene Wenger' at the Emirates? Seems like you are not the majority that you think you are.

Mean Lean - "Ah, there I was thinking that supporting your team and enjoying my club was the norm."
You're also Wenger's front man. You use the team as a vehicle to promote him and his "virtues". It's so transparent.

Kay - Diaby is lazy, inconsistent and injury prone. Vuja De says "he hasn't reached his peak yet." . LOL what is he - 26 ? Must be a late developer, then !
He has talent, don't get me wrong, problem is he doesn't display it on a regular enough basis. And to me, that's not good enough for an Arsenal player. We should ship him out and get someone who will earn the wages we pay him.

Podge - Agree with much of what you said. Except "Let's hope we can get back to that." We won't "get back to that ", because Wenger can't. He's lost the ability to. It's why we never vary our tactics and formation, why we don't try new things on the pitch, try players in positions they may be better suited to, and why we don't do defensive drills, (according to Clichy ) .

All this, because of Wenger's refusal to listen, and reluctance to experiment. It's obvious that's a big factor in why we're stagnating, even going backwards, while he remains in charge.

Aw shucks, Mean Lean. I think you've been missing me. Is that a blush I detect ?
By the way, should we fail to WIN tonight, even you will find it hard to spin your way out of a 12 point gap, and the humiliation of losing to our bitter rivals. Though I'm sure you'll try your hardest to. And naturally, I won't expect to see you sending the removal van to Wenger's office.

Anonymous - Yes we're the third richest club in the world, we've also just increased our season ticket prices, and we still have 50 million in the transfer kitty that we didn't spend. Can you not see that something doesn't sound right here ?
And I'm not talking about our club's financial value. We're stagnating on the field. Eight years, if we don't win the league this season, and you don't think we're going backwards ? Our worst start in 58 years ? Glaring problems and deficiencies that are not rectified year after year, and you're alright with that ?
What's the point of being financially secure if we have a board and manager who won't spend their profits on strengthening the team ? If we're nothing more than a commercial business enterprise, where we're treated as customers, not fans ?

As for whoever is responsible for defensive coaching (does not look like we have one) the least said the better.
At this rate we will be lucky to play in Europe at all.

arsenal going backwards? LOL.....what a delluded little englader u must be.

a club which is the 3rd richest in the world is a club you call going backwards?

so what position did arsenal enjoy in that list prior to arsene wenger ?

    please explain that one einstein.

no arsenal is not going backwards just because they havent won the league..check the history they ve gone for larger spells without winning the league. therefore your arguement is NON VALID.

you are quite ridiculous and i dont want to argue with ridiculous people so ill just sit back and laugh at you and expose you

and as for calling me a fool..yes i am content with watching a club that has just went thorough its biggest transiton in history to reach champions league jackpot paying positions and MAKE MONEY out of developing players. after all this organisation..this business,, has the best operator/manager /supervisor/ceo for such affairs.

it is because i understand what long term projects mean and its because im willing to wait for a nucleous of players who will come from inside the club. the way it has worked for ajax, manchester united and barcelona. those clubs werent built in a day and the same goes for arsenal.

it is you and others who dont realise that arsenal pressed the RESET button when they moved to emirates and thank god that in projects like these where you usually LOSE TIME AND MONEY..we have only lost a bit of time. and have made millions in the process and solidifeid ourselves among strongest clubs financially in a period fielding youngsters and second rate players, plus we have even come close to winning it.

i do not feel the need to castigate a club manager and players who do the right thing and have been overachieveing all these years like some narrow minded little englander who is only interested in trophies. football is a business and as such it will be judged. and a sa business we are faultless. as for tickets ...noone forced anyone to buy it.

Anonymous - You are sounding just like one of the board members. ( Perhaps you are ). You need to be reminded that it IS NOT Wenger's job to run the financial side of the club. That responsibility is the BOARD'S. Wenger's charter is to achieve success on the football pitch. Granted, he has to work within the resources he has been given. But he's BEEN GIVEN those ( financial ) resources repeatedly, and has CHOSEN not to make the maximum use of them.

He replaces class players with average ones. Signing second and third tier players on the cheap, instead of doing what many pundits and the majority of fans are urging him to do - pay the necessary amount to get QUALITY. And he continues to follow this same pattern, with the same predictable result.
