My Vision

Written by Mean Lean on Wednesday, 17 October 2012 11:46

I flicked on my twitter application on my mobile phone last night on my way back from playing football, for the first time in some time, I felt like I had missed out on a night of International football.

Germany 4 Sweden 4 was the obvious match, especially given that Sweden had done an Arsenal at St James' Park. I didn't see the highlights but I am guessing that Per Mertesacker didn't have his best game defensively along with his team mates. It just goes to show that even the best of teams can suffer the type of shame that we witnessed on that eventful afternoon in Newcastle a few years back.

Psychology is such a big part of the game, emotions rear their heads that are very hard to deal with at the time. I am sure Germany felt invincible at 4-0 up, probably played like it whilst the Swedish players may have wished the final whistle would blow after Germany had struck their fourth.

But that responding goal has such weight behind it, for both teams but in different directions. A serge of adrenaline goes through your body when you pull a goal back, you gain an extra spring in your step and a whole new mind set while at the other end of the pitch that invincible feeling vanishes and is replaced by the smallest of doubt.

I cannot say that I have been involved in a game like that but I guess after the first few responding goals, a comeback almost feels inevitable.

Professional players or not they still have to deal with normal human behaviour.

Anyway, where on earth am I going with this? Rambling about human psychology when all I wanted to do is sum up the madness in Germany.

Per Mertesacker did get on the score sheet and I am looking forward to his first goal for us. Someone as big as he is really should be more of a threat on set pieces and I hope he is doing all he can to gain some more aggression in those situations.

Another goalscorer for the Arsenal last night was that of Oliver Giroud and I guess I can make use of the previous waffle by continuing the psychology theme.

Giroud scored his second goal for France after netting a very late equaliser. Watching Giroud celebrate at the end was great to see. That will do him the world of good back at Arsenal. Can we just please start crossing the ball properly, like onto his head rather than over to the opposite flank. Cheers.

After his first miss against Sunderland he had been starting games in his mind with the opposition pulling a goal back to make it 2-1. I tried writing that a few different ways and it still sounds like mumbo jumbo, hopefully you know what I am talking about.

You could see it on his face, the anguish every time he missed, I will come back to Giroud in a second, I don't know if it annoys anyone else but it really gets my goat when a player whacks the ball behind for a goal kick when in a good crossing position or smashes the ball over the bar when team mates are better placed only to look blank faced and jog back as if nothing has happened.

I like the fact that Giroud is upset with himself when he misses, shows a willingness to accept responsibility, a few Gooners past and present should take heed.

Back to Giroud his flicked header against Spain should take him back to 2-0 against Norwich this weekend. The shackles looked looser after he turned in Lukas Podolski's near post cross and I wouldn't be surprised if he was to hit the target again for us against the Canaries.

Laurent Koscielny wasn't at his best last night from what I hear which prompted the usual twitter overreaction from Gooners with severe memory lapses. Koscielny was far in away our best defender last season, in fact he was probably in our top three performers last season. He hasn't had the luxury of having regular football thanks to his early season injury so is playing catch up on the sharpness front.

There I was thinking that his season last term would give him a few games leeway to get back up to speed. I guess not.

I wanted to talk about two topics last night and the fact that it is international football week should make me grab the chance with two hands, I actually do not want to go there today. One is the behaviour from Serbian supporters to the black English players at the under 21s game. Under bloody 21s. The second was Cesc's comments. For different reasons I do not wish to get into it all because I will end up ranting and it veers too far away from football which ultimately is the reason why I write this blog.

I do not wish to write about how much Ivan Gazidis is paid and I do not wish to write about idiots in a crowd. In some ways, I don't even blame the Serbian supporters too much. Why? Well what else can ignorant, stupid people do apart from being stupid and ignorant?

But when UEFA hand out larger fines to Nicklas Bendtner for revealing his sponsored pants than to countries who in large numbers clearly racially abuse players then you know the footballing world has gone mad. It is way beyond the footballing world unfortunately but like I said, this is not football.

I mean how is anything going to get done when the head of FIFA Sepp Blatter is going around saying this:

"He should say that this is a game. We are in a game, and at the end of the game, we shake hands, and this can happen, because we have worked so hard against racism and discrimination."

He also said, on Al Jazeera: "During a match you may say something to someone who's not looking exactly like you, but at end of match it's forgotten."

It is a ridiculous and would be laughable if it wasn't a serious matter but I shall leave that for others to delve into. I don't fancy smashing my fork down on my plate during my lunch so I shall give it a miss.

As for Cesc Fabregas, do we really want to know how he would have stayed for life and how good he had it here? Unlike many who leave, I do believe that he loves the club but once you jump ship, I would rather he focused on swimming and not about how much he enjoyed the boat.

And on a brighter note, Mikel Arteta has spoken about a potential future in management. Which instantly reminded me of this wonderful blog by the ever impressive Poznan in my pants.

Please take the time to have a read when you can.

And with that, lunch is calling me.

Back soon.

Re Germany, the only one of the Swedish goals that was anywhere near Mertesacker's zone of influence in either build up or finish was the 4th, where he just won the ball in a 50:50 challenge in the air with Zlatan and it fell to an unmarked swede.
Badstuber looked liked an amateur, and not for the first time...

Thanks Matthew. As I said, I didn't see the game so I am pleased that Per wasn't directly at fault for the most part.

Apart from a rash challenge which led directly to the penalty for Spain, Koscielny had a reasonably good game, in my opinion, and was certainly France's best defender on the night.

He was my player of the year last season - as recorded on this site - and I've no doubt that providing he gets a proper run of successive games, Koscielny will hit the outstanding standards of performance he produced in 2011/2012.

I hope the racists from serbia get punished worse than suarez.
But i hope whoever punishes them doesn't come from a racist culture where they'll be taken to court and declared innocent (with cashley as their witness). They don't need to drop the brother of danny rose from their national team, because it would make their national icon uneasy, since he's not serb anyway. And if they "donate to a certain 'charity' heh" then it's all forgiven.

Good writing ML as always. I hope your game went well & you're coping ok with the aches that come after a game at our age.
Cobra Kos had a bad 1st half, no doubt about it, he was all over the place if I am to be over critical. But in the 2nd half with France chasing an equaliser & their midfield doing a lot better, he was his usual self in both boxes. In fact he could've had a goal or assist if Ribery had been a tad accurate.
I've only read twitter summaries of Cesc comments & like you I am not interested, but I'll say this whenever the Cesc topic comes up I remember two things, 1. An ecstatic boy running with tears in his eyes to the touchline at San Siro after scoring against Milan & 2. A petulant disinterested young man backheeling to the best player in the opposition at the edge of your own box for him to score. To keep it short I dont give a shit what Cesc thinks / says

ok ..first per..he was at fault for two of the goals sweden scored... and i dont want to listen to any crap that ibra fouled him with his elbow..per is a defender..a german defender.... and should not be bothered about elbows from anyone....if anything he should be giving elbows to the strikers and not get beaten like that....

konscielny ..very wrong behaviour and comment....konscielny is naive...he is forgetting how the press has attacked arsenal on henry, pires eduardo and the general witch hunt we get from uk media and refs...

gooner ..big words there about serbia...to be honest i dont give a shit about any player who might get abused by some muppets in the stands...i dont care if the abuse has to do with colour, ethnicity , religion, family .....football is a game and whoever gives attention to such things is an idiot. lets not ;lose our focus which is the game and lets try to put an end at trying to solve social problems through a sport ffs...a sport that due to its speed and passion can lead to volatile situations

more importantly if we want fifa to ban serbia because of racial abuse ( originating from the terraces) , then what should we really do to the actual players who abuse their coloured fellow pros ...i speak of course of john terry vs anton ferdinand and the ridiculous case of suarez vs evra....

as for suarez...shame on you arsenal fans ...shame on you ...how easy you forget the witch hunt vieira had to endure seeing red whenever a white english ref felt like it...you are forgetting how a bunch of neanderthals were enjoying kicking our players and noone doing anything about it..... you are forgetting the scum in the media who were calling eduardo a cheat ...you are also forgetting all the scum in media calling our manager a french tosser who is past it....you are also forgetting that it is IN THIS COUNTRY where our manager gets abuse about paedophilia which to me is a thousand times worse than suarez calling evra a negrito in the heat of 90 mins battle .......

So lets think a bit before opening our mouths or typing yes ?.... and dont forget how this country;s media and f.a establishment has been an enemy to our club ever since we approached football in a non-brittish manner.........

arshavin is still waiting for his penalty at o.t when fletcher butchered him from behind with a two footed lunge inside the penalty area.....

campbell ( as well as myself) still has not forgotten who dived to end our unbeaten run.......

Now as for racism itself...this is a social phenomenon which has to do with education and family uPbringing. There is also the factor of personal preference. An attempt to harnest the preferences of every individual is utopic, therefore the matter of racism will only extend as long as we allow it.

If a black /asian/white/whatever was not allowed EQUAL opportunities in work, education health then yes by all means make a case for racism...but when its a bunch of drunks on the terraces shouting like urangotangs then why give a shit? why give value to their behaviour with your responce ?

The greatest weapon one has against a bunch of people trying to get under his skin is to ignore them.....let them sizzle in their attempts to wind you up...the more attention you give them the more you encourage them. Its exactly like trolls.....do not feed the troll...and there are trolls everywhere ..not just the internet..there are trolls in the stands , there trolls in the media...there are trolls in politics...everywhere..its a human condition..if i find which button to push to irk you i damn well will push it if it means that i will gain something from it. and if your misery is my satisfaction you can bet i will do it to you the whole time till i see you crumble and psychologically destroyed.

The trolls in media have found which buttons to push to irk you ..trophyless years..wages...deadwood...wenger is uselss at tactics, "they dont like it up em"..Theyve got a whole keyboard to use and play with your minds. The more you/we respond to it the worse it got. They know damn well that Wenger aint useless, they know damn well that 7 years without a trophy while repaying stadium costs is nothing ...but they also know that YOU WILL BITE THE BAIT.. and once youre on the hook they can do whatever they want with you...drive you mad..turn you against your club manager and players....which has happened.

Do you see Wenger giving value/responding to the abuse he gets about a matter far worse than racism ? No you dont..because he is above all that shit... Do you remember Drogba...PROUD DROGBA ever giving a shit about racial abuse? Do you think he never got it? Of course he did...but he didnt throw his toys out the pram like some pseudo-sensitive muppet who manipulated the fame of the club he worked for and its public profile to get one back over a striker who had given him a horrid time on the pitch.....

And lets be honest here yes? If evra had genuinely felt offended by suarez;s words, then as a man he would have stood his ground right there and floor him like any man would do who honors his trousers and his dignity. The fact he went behind the cameras to get suarez banned is the thin line between racial abuse and hypocrisy.

Also whoever has played football knows very well that what goes on the pitch stays there...you also know that you will get verbally abused by opposition players and fans...your mom will be abused ..your sister,..your ethnicity , your religion maybe..even your colour.......if you bite the bait you lose your temper and consequently the match ....and then youll get abuse from your coach for paying attention to things which you shouldnt.

if you rise above it ..it will remain below you.....it will remain under the surface....if you pay attention to it it will come out in the surface......

if you keep banging on aboutracial abuse .."oh racial abuse there" ..."another there i heard it"..."yes here too" ..then the racists are winning for you bring them in the surface..fuck them. ignorance is strength. the correct kind of ignorance ...(not just being oblivious)

wenger is not oblivious to the chants he hears he just ignores them and rises above them and in the end its them who have egg in their faces and the stain of a sub-cultured animal. wenger dignity = intact.
point of story...dont bite the bait...
  • paspartu
    avatar
but here is the catch..you need to be clever to ignore it...you need to be able to seperate the chants aimed at you to unsettle you and the real actual evil behaviours that prohibit you from putting food on your table or your kids in college or your family members to hospital, even your ownself.

can a player show strength and the intelligence to understand that the chants are aimed to unsettle him and his game? does he recognise that those chanting them awful things are deprived individuals with psychopathic issues with nothing better to do in their lives than watching football and swearing ? since the people making them chants are sick in the head why pay attention to mentally disturbed people? do you let mentally disturbed people govern your emotions just cause they found which button to push?

if the player understands these things then no chant will unsettle him...if a player believes in his self and his abilities and knows where he comes from and where he is going he wont let any words from any stands be an obstacle to his game, career, life.

p.s what did cesc say ?

  • richie  - A firm handshake cure for Racisim says Blatter
    avatar
Only a Swiss born in 1936 could make a statement so far removed from reality! How is this old fool who is so out of touch still in his job? It beggars belief!

For me the John Terry case was/is cut and dried! (And its brought our Judiciary into disrepute, in fact its been made to look like a bit of a jackass)! If you weren't on the pitch you couldn't have heard what he said but we could all read his lips. The fact that JT hired an OJ Simpson style array of expensive lawyers who constucted a defence based on a point of order, in that no one could know without a shadow of a doubt that he "JT" hadn't simply repeated the words he was being accused of using was both audacious and incredulous. In fact as with Blatter so with JT it beggard belief! Yet on a point of pure law it was a defence and it was up held. Fortunately JT had no such luck with the normaly toothless FA. the facts were there for all to see (if not to hear) he racially abused Anton Ferdinand!

The Suarez case is far less clear for me. Negro or Negrito in Spanish is not the equivalent of the N..... word or even little N.... word. In Spanish Negro is the colour Black. Negrito is simply little black, but could be used in the form of Blackie. My son's name is Jack he's mixed race i.e. Half Caucasian Half Afro-Caribean and he has never lived in the UK although he is British through and through, and of course a Gooner. He was raised in Spain. I called him Jack after my Grandfather a fervent Gooner, (the man who took me to my 1st match aged 4) trouble was the year he was born Jack had been the most popular name for the passed 3 years. There are lots of Jacks in his age group. To differenciate him from other Jacks he became Black Jack, or Amoungst his Spanish classmates Negrito Jack. This term isn't Racist its factual. He is/was the darkest and his name is Jack. In Spanish he should have been called Mestizo (Mixed raced) Jack which would have been more accurate, but Mestizo in Spanish also has reference to a mongrel dog so my son much prefered Negrito Jack for obvious reasons.

The question I pose is this; Is it racist to call a man who is black "Black Man"? It would be if you called him a Black C U Next Tuesday. But I know if I was in Dalston (The nearest area to my beloved Highbury) with a large Black population and I said to a Black man I didn't know. Hey my Black Brother do you know where the nearest petrol shop is? No offence would be taken where none was given or meant. My point is this Suarez calling Evra Negrito, of itself wasn't racist. The word or phrase had to be said in a racist context for it to be racist and for me it was never shown that that was the case.

As for the Serbs they shouldn't be fined or match banned. The Serbian population needs to be made to understand that they will not be allowed to enter into any international tornaments while their fans do not observe internationaly accepted norms. If English clubs as a nation can be banned from European football for 5 years because Liverpool fans were considered at fault after the Heysel stadium disaster then the Serbian nation can be excluded from a World cup and a Euro until they bring their house in order. Thats whats needed for Serbs to understand.

PP @ 17:51 Sometimes I've had sympathy with your loyal Gooner views but there is absolutely no place for Racist Chants eminating from the crowd at any football matches, just as there's no place for racist comments exchanged between players on the field. The days when that type of thing was acceptable (back in the Blatter days in Switzerland) are thankfully long gone, as should be the sickening paedophilia (mainly Spuds chant). Likewise although the Spuds call themselves "Yids" I would prefer it if Gooners didn't, as I'm not completely at ease with the terminology (we have Familys at the Emirates and as should be expected some are Jewish) . We discussed this point on these very pages and I'm glad to say the general concensus was we were better than dropping down to their "the Spuds" level. I hate the Spuds but I don't hate them because they are Jewish! We can't just say as you imply that we all know the type of insults that fly about on a football field, so if Racist comments are made don't rise to them ignor them and they'll go away.

I used t play on Hackney Wick 10 years ago and if someone Racially abused one of our team members there would be a fight. Have things changed? Can you racially abuse a player to wind him up and its acceptable now? In the 80's it was acceptable but by 2000 it wasn't have things gone backwards?

richie very well said mate..that 3rd paragraph of yours where you describe cultural descriptions of factual appearance/colour/background of your boy holds all the meaning.

what i meant with them chants is not to give them any value for they give strength to the urangotangs...by reacting to it you give them strength.. that is why i chose the example of wenger who is called far far worse things than any racial slur could encompass. to give an example of how ignoring it can help you walk with your head high and your dignity intact. of course its difficult for some ...but that should be the purpose.

peace..and thank god we got arsenal football at 17:30..this interlull has been really really shit...

and as for the suarez/evra case ..i think we all saw what happened..suarez was tearing evra to shreds, stealing ball..winning headers..dribbling past him ..evra was having a horrible afternoon. Since evra couldnt cope he started the pullings and the pushings and the kickings and the " look ref look what he is doing" repertoire of his..then he was kissing badges in front of the kop...highly provocative behaviour...and when suarez gave some back ..evra started crying...these are not the actions of a MAN, these are the actions of a pussy seeking to divert attention from the fact he was getting outplayed onto other things....then he used the cameras and his club's public profileand influence to launch a character assasination attack on the uruguayan who has a black father ffs ...it was beyond a joke ..it was scheduled , well programmed and had one purpose in mind...to tag a foreign player playing for a rival and to have public sentiment turned against him. which has happened.

that day evra reminded me of all them cunts who called arsenal players soft and " not liking it up em" and when one of our players gave some back we were told off for our discipline and how our players play dirty . hypocrisy of the highest order.
