Here we are again, we are in that situation once more where a victory would claw back some points on Chelsea who only managed to salvage an injury time equaliser last night. We start the day six points away from fourth and in sixth position in the league table. We have been in this position before and we have failed to capitalise on rival slip ups but the difference this time round is the strength of our available players. At Swansea and Fulham we were depleted at the back and we missed the composure and fight of Mikel Arteta, thankfully we have Sagna back in the squad, Coquelin can continue as right back if need be and Arteta is ready to play and hopefully that will give us a major boost.

While no games in the Premier League are easy games, Bolton's recent victory against Liverpool proves that point, we have to take six points from six against Bolton and Blackburn over the weekend. We have dropped more than enough points already so the wriggle room to drop points has all but disappeared.

We have the players again, we have the quality so it is now down to the attitude and commitment of the players. I want to see the second half team against Aston Villa from the first whistle instead of waiting until the second half. That said, perhaps our apparent raising of the handbrake is due to the amount of games we have had to play in a short time without the previous option of rotation.

With every game being so important, it will be difficult for Arsene to rotate too many of his best players but at the same time overplaying them can lead to injury. A classic case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Arsene would get blamed if we drop points due to not starting with Vermaelen but then blamed if Vermaelen picks up an injury. Who would be a football manager? Well I guess the few million a year may just convince me to give it a go.

Arsene has a few decisions to make tonight for sure. Mikel Arteta is likely to come back in but in the place of whom? Aaron Ramsey sparked our come back with a superb second half effort but Tomas Rosicky has been floating around the pitch in recent games, linking everything together. Aaron Ramsey is currently Arsene's first choice right now but I suppose it depends on his physical recovery after Sunday.

Arsene has to decide whether Bacary Sagna is ready to come back in, a leg break should not be rushed but something tells me that he will return to the starting line up today, I guess it all depends on what we do not see at the training ground. If Francis Coquelin starts then I will still feel confident because the lad has done a fantastic job in whatever positions he slots into. Well worthy of a place in the Arsenal squad for the foreseeable future.

I created the line up graphic last night, but it now occurs to me that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may well be pulled out of this one. I am not sure if Arsene will start him in three games in a row, even though he more than deserves his place. It is a shame that we do not have Gervinho about the place right about now, he would be the ideal player to rotate around with Walcott and Chamberlain.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Andrey Arshavin starting the game today or perhaps even Yossi Benayoun who hasn't really had much of a sniff since his disappointing showing at Swansea a few weeks ago.

Thierry Henry should return to the squad from his recent injury but I cannot see a starting place for him. Hopefully he can come on with the game already won and it would be nice to see another goal from the former legend.

Like I say, regardless of who starts, who plays. The players just need to fight for this and give their all. Play with a quick tempo and take the chances that come our way. Should we do that then we can win the game. We must win this game.

Come on you Gunners.

Just learnt that Jack is believed to have suffered a second stress fracture to his injured ankle. He's tweeted saying he's staying strong but unsure how long this latest set back is going to keep him from training. I'd be surprised if we see him before April. Shame, the lad had such a promising season with some impressive performances. We certainly miss him.

I agree it time for Ramsey to be benched, Rosicky is more creative in the finally 3rd, we cant keep relying on our wingers to create for RVP its too predictable now   . We desperately need a creative attacking midfielder! :!: :?:
  • JoeCarbonUK  - Midfield Options
    avatar
I think we have plenty of good options in midfield now that Arteta is back. Coquelin can cover Song and Song can push forward and cover Arteta should Arteta be out. Rosicky can cover both Ramsey and Arteta if required. So there is scope for rotation.

Coquelin is proving to be a really usefull squad member and I am really glad we got him to sign a new contract. He is versatile in that he can play in many positions and has shown that he is reliable.

We can cope without Wilshere for the rest of the season as our goal is to finish in the top four rather than win the league.

We will get stronger still when Gervinho and Gibbs come back into the side.

I am praying that we can put in a strong run in to the end of the season, rather than the usual running out of steam.

    Come on you Gunners!

We really sucked tonight as a team. We had plenty of chances to win the game in the first 20 minutes, we could have been 3 - nil up, but as is the norm lately, we weren't efficient at all in front of the Bolton goal. There was mo urgency like what we witnessed in the second half against Aston Villa on Sunday. What is going on with Arsenal? Since December, we haven't been playing well when it really mattered. I hope it is not "Mr. Complacency" creeping back in... I also hope that Van Persie is not starting his love affair with the woodwork all over again. We really could do without that...
Very disappointing result tonight especially since Chelsea only managed a draw yesterday.
To be honest, Bolton deserved a penalty. WS13 did commit a foul (ever so slightly) in the box, but I am not going to complain about that. By the way, his kicking was terrible throughout the game. He is becoming over-confident with the ball, I think. He'd better quit that before he gives me a
heart attack one of these days.

To be honest, I didn't see it as no urgency. I didn't think there was much wrong with our attitude I thought once again it was down to god awful finishing.

Apart from van Persie our team just do not know how to convert chances and it is scary. We should have been cruising in the first half, but instead we go in 0-0. It happens so often. Dominate the game, have all the ball, carve out chances that just get hit at the keeper.

How can we win enough games if we cannot score goals? So frustrated tonight.

    ML,
I honestly didn't think that we played with the same energy and determination that we showed against Villa in the second half of that game, hence me saying no urgency. We started the game in 6th place looking up at Chelsea and Liverpool in the race for 4th. There were way too many backward passes and sideway passes. We would go from the edge of the Bolton box all the way back to WS13 on more than a few occasions and that was driving me completely nuts! Against Villa in that second half, Rosicky was constantly driving us forward at almost every opportunity and was linking up well with van Persie and Chamberlain. I did not see that same urgency from either Ramsey or Arteta tonight. We should have passed better and we should have taken a couple of our chances early on. I still cannot believe that Ramsey, Chamberlain, and especially Walcott all missed those glorious chances with only the keeper to beat. Walcott really should have done better. I wish that chance had fallen to either Henry or van
Persie. We either need to learn to convert our chances or kiss 4th place goodbye for good. RvP cannot do it all by himself. If it continues like this, we will definitely need another prolific striker to complement RvP next season. My goodness, I am already looking forward to next season... That can't be good, can it???

To be honest, It is not looking good at all...We hold faith but it is disappointing...creativity is not the major missing factor here it seems...is a do or die attitude in the final third as well composure that we are missing ...Technique is there (It would be nice if Walcott could turn his marker more often), energy waning a bit but there...

I am beginning to think for the kind of wastefulness energy we are showing in the final third that a 4-4-2 may not be such a bad thing...where you get the wide players to just get the crosses in ...
Our direct competitors for the 4th place (Liverpool and Newcastle) display a more clinical attitude in the final third...

This may be a wild idea but in an effort to relieve Ramsey (for a bit) ...why not push Song to CAM and bring Coquelin to play alongside Arteta...or use Rosicky more in the CAM role...
if we are persisting with the 4-2-1-2-1 formation..just a thought..
  • Colesy  - 7th Place

Well some (including ML) have voiced their disappointment but for others, last nights result was not totally unexpected. 3 defeats preceded the victory over Villa in the cup on the weekend - which I suggested was very fortunate and more to do with Villa's poor defending than anything else. Our form has been very poor since "the run" dried up in December.

Now down to 7th and even further behind the scum and Chelsea. Europa League seems our best hope for European action next season - what a thought. How low has club sunk??? I only hope that we don't sink any further - although the damage is already done as far as the clubs income it can expect to generate next season with less TV money and loss of ticket sales. Anyone noticing the growing number of empty seats in the ground these days??? The damage is also already done as far as RVP leaving in the summer- I'd be hugely surprised (not in the same way as Pika looking at his favourite picture of Wenger kind of way through  ) if RVP doesn't leave before the end of the summer transfer window.

Wenger WILL be judged. Just as he requested.

Well as a supporter, I think I live in hope that the next game is better one than the last...a positive attitude to adopt in my opinion...dont think it cost much...

RVP may leave but I am sorry to say...the club is bigger than him...we can't be pinning our hopes and dreams on one person...thats illogical...football is a collective

I couldnt care whether Wenger is judged or not...I think pinning the blame on one person is irresponsible and unappreciative of all the parts that make up a team, squad, club, a business .... If the finances are affected and the board and the other 'powers that be' see that Wenger has no viable solution for us making a sucessfull campaign then so be it...until then I support ... I for one would say that for his part he (and Dein) have played in estabilshing Arsenal on the top stage, I think some patience (at least until the end of the season) would be nice before we cast such vociferous vitriol his way or even worse BOO our own players...

As for loss of tickets sales ...well thats down to us supporters...
Let's all see how the rest of the season pans out..shall we :)

As ever Eric, you make a lot of sense. It is not as black and white as many are making it out. We are not privy as to what is happening behind closed doors.

Many mistakes have been made and I am sure it is mistakes from many different people. Having said that, I don't think the world is about to cave in either.

We are still rebuilding the squad but the mistakes of the summer cannot be made again.

    Pika,

While I agree with plenty of what you say, I would advise you not to use phrases like 'little englanders' as that is nothing to do with the argument.

I wouldn't like to be seen as encouraging Xenophobia by not making you aware. I was born in England and class myself as English but that doesn't change my stance on the club and management.

Let's keep it strictly Arsenal. Cheers

an allerdyce can never critisise an arsene , neither a redknap nor the cousins of rooneh and shawcross and the relatives of barton, pardew, pullis etc etc

to me all them people who critisise arsenal and wenger are scum. no logical person who knows a thing or two about football would ever dare doubt the experience or knowledge that managers like wenger ferguson lippi mourinho hiddink possess.......

yet england must be the only place on earth where clearly unqualified neanderthal thinking muppets think they can advise a guru and a scientist on how to do his job.

    its madness

some are even saying wenger doesnt understand modern economics and finance in the football industry......lol ....

ML, I read comments that suggest that stuff is going on behind closed doors that we mere supporters are not privy to and the hint therefore is that its not all Wenger's fault. Wenger doesn't necessarily decide the transfer policy etc.

My question is this. If Wenger is a scapegoat and therefore decisions are being made by the board and he's taking all the flak from the supporters and media etc, why does he keep signing new contracts? No matter how much he may love the club, no contract is worth all the grief he is getting. It's not like he needs the money- he's being paid £6M or so per year (wages for a successful manager btw)

    Anyone got any answers?
