Match Review - Arsenal 2 Fulham 1 - Premier League
Say what?
Say we are toppa the league that's what.
We are not quite at the half way stage with 16 games being played but we certainly have put ourselves in a good position to date. I was saying in my pre match thoughts that we needed to get rid of the home problems but even though we have taken the three points, you still feel that the uncertainty still remains.
We had started on the front foot and our passing was quick and penetrative, we looked like a side that have won their last two games.
It only took six minutes for the Gunners to be presented with a great chance to score, Arshavin volleyed straight at former Arsenal target Mark Schwarzer from close range after a knock down by Squillaci. Samir Nasri had poked wide after a great diagonal run followed by a through pass from Arshavin. It was interesting to hear Wenger speak about his off the ball improvement from when he first joined the club.
A minute later, Samir Nasri added his first stamp of quality to the game with a wonderful goal. It was the same combination again. Arshavin picked up the ball following a mistake from a Fulham defender and his prodded pass found a lurking Nasri on the right, he jinked inside one, dummied a shot past another and then fired high past Schwarzer on his left foot. A magic goal from a very talented individual.
Samir Nasri has always been technically brilliant but he was a blunt 21 year old. He could turn his man inside and out and then play a square pass to a team mate. He used to trick his way past the right back cut back inside and lay it back to Clichy. We are now watching the direct 23 year old version. That was his tenth of the season, already better than his Arsenal best so far and that is with missing a chunk at the start with a knee injury.
At that position we needed to go and win the game. Fulham were all over the place, we had total domination but as always with us, we make things far more difficult than they should be by not killing off the game.
Arshavin had a low drive saved, moments later Nasri cut the ball back to Arshavin who had his attempt smothered on the line by the opposition stopper. Song unmarked in the middle failed to score from a superb Rosicky cross from the right. He really should have scored but he miscued his effort wide.
Two observations, Rosicky's crossing from the right has got to be the best in the squad but he had a below par performance. Another observation was that our three midfield players were not at their best. Alex Song had a 45 minutes to forget about. He misplaced many simple passes. Rosicky could not influence the game as he did at Villa Park. Wilshere struggled after playing in midweek.
It is unusual for Arsenal to struggle in central midfield, given the fact that it is probably our strongest area on the pitch. Usually one of the three at least raises their game but it was not to be.
Once we over elaborate or miss chances, then you have a good chance to know what's coming.
Koscielny and Squillaci clashed heads, Koscielny was all over the place from the impact but credit to him for trying to play on for the cause. Not many people have mentioned this but Clint Dempsey's subtle pass through to Kamara was wonderful and the finish was simple from close range.
Johan Djourou had to replace the dazed Koscielny in defence.
All of a sudden, Fulham gained confidence and we lost our fluency. Fulham were sliding balls through our defence who were very square and very high up the pitch and we almost got caught on a number of occasions. One time Kamara evaded the offside flag but Lukasz Fabianski made yet another crucial game saving stop. At 2-1 down we would have found it difficult to get to a winning position.
Although we were living life dangerously at the back we were still creating chances but not taking them. Rosicky dragged a snap shot wide, Chamakh had a point blank header saved, and Arshavin twisted and turned in the box and fired in a left foot shot that was pushed away by Schwarzer.
Once again we should be out of sight, instead the game is in the balance and dropping points is most certainly a possibility.
Arsene brought on Van Persie for Rosicky with 25 minutes remaining, to field the side that I predicted that he would start the game with.
Van Persie's first contribution of the game was not what we would have expected, he cleared off the line after Fabianski misjudged a punch and the ball was diverted towards our goal.
As a lover of good football, I find myself watching many Barcelona games as much as I despise their arrogance but with Messi in their line up they have a player who can pull out something special when the team are failing to pass through the opposition. He takes charge and skips through the opposition to either score himself or open up new spaces for others. I have felt that we have lacked that in recent seasons. Until now.
Samir Nasri is now taking charge in games and is now a match winner. With 15 minutes to go Arshavin fed a ball into Van Persie on his left foot, with Robin desperate to make an impact on the game, I expected our number 10 to pull the trigger and have a go, instead he slipped the ball into Nasri who was making his way into the penalty area, he skipped past a couple challenges then rounded Schwarzer taking him wide on his left foot. He has ended up in that position for the third consecutive game, he has missed his last two left foot shots so instead he spun around on his more trusted right foot and lifted the ball into the net from a difficult angle whilst falling to the ground.
A superb piece of individual brilliance from probably the only player in our squad who could have scored that goal. A player who is standing out from his team mates this season.
Johan Djourou who replaced Koscielny in the first half was fantastic in the final stages of the game, powering away headers from crosses and long balls into the box. Both teams had chances at the end and Fabianski made another great low save from a Gera drive but the points ended in Arsenal's hands.
Conclusion
This was very much a game that followed the Arsenal template. Dominate, score, miss chances then concede. Luckily we did not concede anymore goals and Nasri's brilliance saved the day. With Chelsea struggling to find their mojo and drawing against an Everton side that we beat at Goodison recently we leap to the top of the table as Manchester United trade snow for a game in hand.
Our midfield were below par, if it wasn't for that then I think Fulham would not have had a look in. Johan Djourou and Lukasz Fabianski continue to grow and show their worth to the side, Van Persie is coming back with some more minutes under his belt, I wonder if he will start the game in midweek against Partizan Belgrade.
Defensively we still need to tighten up and not look vulnerable but we have still conceded only two more goals than Manchester United. The pundit on my stream seemed to think that we had conceded more than Chelsea and Manchester United combined, that would be only if Chelsea had only let in two goals all season and I am sure Sunderland hit three past them recently so that cannot be the case.
Whilst we have to be stronger in that area, it would be easy to think that we are way behind our rivals when in fact we are closer than we think.
Our full backs were fantastic on the day, Sagna powered down the right and sent over a few top quality crosses as well as the customary excellent defending. Gael Clichy still remains one of my favourite players regardless of his past mistakes. You had better make sure your pass is 100% if it is anywhere near our turbo charged left back because his ability to pounce and whip the ball away from the opposition toe is the best that I have seen in the red and white of Arsenal.
Reports suggest that Thomas Vermaelen could be back in the squad in the next few weeks and that will be a massive boost to the squad if true.
Three more points, top of the league and let us forget the bits and pieces during the 90 minutes. Let us stop and say a big thank you to Raymond Domenech.
Fabianski (7.5)
Sagna (7.5)
Squillaci (6.5)
Koscielny (6.5)
Clichy (7.5)
Song (6)
Wilshere (6.5)
Rosicky (6.5)
Nasri (9)
Chamakh (7)
Arshavin (7)

05-Dec-2010 12:26 | | dkgooner - When is a foul not a foul?
A bit of a minor matter I guess, but I was enraged near the end when Walcott took the ball down to the right corner flag. With the linesman standing right by him, Dempsey came up and pushed Walcott in the back with both hands. Walcott still kept control of the ball, but as he had not been penalised for the first push, Dempsey thought he might as well do it again, so he did - harder this time, so Walcott was pushed off the pitch and Dempsey ran off with the ball. How can that NOT be a foul? I would like that linesman to be forced to watch a rolling clip of that moment for half-an-hour and then be told to explain why it is not a foul. He should certainly go for retraining. Assistant referee my arse. As one of the commentators said during the Braga game, having more assistant referees just means we can see more clearly how poor the quality of refereeing really is and how they consistently duck making decisions.

Fabianski, Vermaelen, Song, Fabregas, Nasri and Chamakh. This is the spine of the Arsenal first team and Nasri has just become a vital component.
Nasri is now showing his teamwork and creativity on a more regular basis and the team is clearly benefiting from it.
If there is someone who deserves an extended run in the team then it's Djourou. He has been solid whenever he's been selected, but Wenger continues to select Koscielny ahead of him, a player who has failed to impress me IMO. Djourou is excellent in the air, good distribution and he slots into either side of central defence with ease. He's a class act and along with Nasri was our best player on show yesterday.

Outsatnding game from Nasri and JD and now if can accommodate RVP,Cesc(Real Cesc),Nasri and Arsh in our line up then surely the opposition would fear us no matter who they are.

05-Dec-2010 12:43 | | dkgooner - The rest of the game
Having got that off my chest, I have to say how great it is to be going to OT next week on top. Gives the team something extra to fight for. But as ML points out, there are still some worrying factors.
1) I still maintain Djourou should be starting games - don't care really whether it's in place of Squillaci or Koscielny - just that he's out there.
2) Jack Wilshere is beginning to look like he needs a break.
3) I don't see that Song/Wilshere is our best pairing in DM/CM. They are both naturally inclined to get forward, which is fine provided they have an awareness of where each other is and they don't both do it at the same time, but that's not happening, with the result that the back four are left exposed to a quick counter, which Man Utd are experts in. I would like to see Song revert to keeping back and winning ball and distributing. If he can't do that, then Denilson should play instead of one of the two because he's more disciplined. Problem is of course that Denilson is a bit slow compared to Song.
Wenger's ways are still as mysterious to me as they always have been. He builds great attacking formations but seems to have a blind spot for what to me are obvious inadequacies in our defensive game.
It will be very interesting to see who starts aginst Partizan. I agree with ML that RvP should start to get him really up to speed for next Monday. I imagine Wenger will make a lot of changes and we will struggle to assert ourselves and then he will be forced to bring on the heavy guns to get a result. I would put a strong team out from the off, get the lead we need, then take players off.
In the meantime, I think I'll spend the day savouring Samir's two goals yesterday. To do that once in a game would be fantastic, but twice is almost orgasmic.

if wenger continues with his casual and pedestrian approach to defense then arsenal will always suffer. JD looks like the best cb he has ever signed out of the blue though his reflex and concentration off the ball should improve.all the three cbs should work on their left foot

I thought Theo could have stood up a little better to Dempsey's shove. He got muscled off that ball too easily for my liking.

>Van Persie's first contribution of the game was not what we would have expected, he cleared off the line after Fabianski misjudged a punch and the ball was diverted towards our goal. to get the ball. He did it in order to put the Fulham player off. If you watch the play the Fulham player is completely unmarked and the easy play for him was to head the ball back across the goal which would have caused lots of trouble. There are at least two Arsenal players on the goal line behind Fabianski and that is the reason why he can move out. By going out he put the Fulham player off heading back across the goal and opened up the choice of heading towards the goal and towards the two Arsenal players, one of whom did his job.

Afternoon Gooners,
Some very interesting points from many comments. Would anyone start with Robin against the Mancs on the 13th?

05-Dec-2010 15:16 | | richie - Kosh or Djourou?
DJD Yet again I find myself in total agreement regarding Djourou. In my pre game line up choice I put Djourou & Squilla because so far thats been our most consistance combo. When Johan replaced Kosh he was excellent, he looked far more assured. I like Kosh and I really think he's a prospect but he's struggling in the prem, and he needs time.
Djourou should be 1st choice on merit not promise.
Whenever TV returns from his mamouth injury conundrum then we'll reassess, but he'll have to win his place back. By 1st playing in the reserves and B team. (He's not even back in training so its gonna be a good while).
I can only think that Kosh looks great in training for Arsene to pick him before Djourou. Training as we know ain't the real thing.
Nas has always had the talent, technique, ability and promise to be a great! All thats needed is consistancy (a bit like the whole of our team).

If I remember rightly a double pawed shove in the back is against the rules so Walcott shouldn't have to "stand up better" to it

05-Dec-2010 16:13 | | richie - Ahh ML thats a hard one.
It would be great for AW to have the confidence to do just that. I'd love it!
but I'd argue that would mean 442 because RvP ain't up to midfield duties, we'd need to answer 1st is RvP fit enough? 2nd up to it? Because before answering that comes a the little question of our defense.
If its a conservative team selection? Considering our recent defensive failings I'd say it should be, then AW will pick both Song & Dennilson in the middle, so our back 4 gets cover.
Nas has/must be 1st name on the list for offensive mid. Which leaves either Shava or Rosicky? I'd say Shava gets the nod, because if he's up for it he can change a game on his own (we are still waiting for his post world cup blitz). I say this despite us all knowing Rosicky & Nas work well together. So...........
Fabski
Sagna Djourou Squilla Clichy
Nas Song Dennilson Shava
RvP
Chamakh
That would be a very offensive confident way to approach the Manu'er game. It could easily be a 451 variation which I could imagine AW being inclined towards.

05-Dec-2010 16:29 | | Joblow - Kosh and JD
Actually i think the pairing should be Kosh and JD. Everyone talks about Squil but i think the others do more and thus end up in more bad situations covering for him, e.g one of Kamara's first offsides where Squil was totally out paced and Kosh came from behind to reach Kamara only for him to be called offside. If he did scored and it given everyone would be saying Kosh fault. Similarly against Braga the final goal where he totally blocked off JD who had the guy covered on the left.

05-Dec-2010 16:30 | | dkgooner - Man Utd
Well reasoned richie - I'd agree totally with your team if I was assured that Robin was 100% fit and comes through Wednesday's game unscathed. Every time he goes down and the trainer comes on, I think, "Oh no - not again" - like on Saturday, but fortunately this time I think it was just an arm in the mouth. But assuming he plays against Partisan, and it hardly seems credible that he won't start that one, we will be able to judge how fit he is. If he can give 60 mins at full tempo, then I'd start him at OT.
The defensive midfield is just as interesting. I'm happy with any two from three of Song, Denilson and Wilshire, provided that one of them is instructed not to venture further forward than the centre circle. But against Man Utd, I'd prefer to see richie's line-up. I think Denilson's instinct is to hang back and we will need the extra cover in front of the back four. United are very quick on the counter as we all know and they are a good footballing side who keep the ball on the floor. It's going to be an exciting evening.

i dont understand why everyone is giving our defence a hard time when the only goal we conceeded came after a clash of heads and a clear distraught koncielny who had no idea where he was in the pitch and was holding his face.....besides i think it was a bit offside cause squil and kon are ahead..dont know where clichy was though in the line..maybe it was him who kept camara on side and not kons..anyone seen a clear replay?
and again it snot the fault of the defence...arsneals problem is not their defence as much as not killing the game when it matters.. our attack should have put us 3 or even 4 goals up front in first 25 mins..but because of ott elabprate finnish efforts we ended up getting equalised and chasing 3 points in a game we could have been resting players in second half...
if the attack gets ruthless then the defence will have an easier job....when the opponents gets stuffed in first 20 minutes and finds himself 3 goals down there is little he can do. thats were wenger should tell his players to concentrate..in finishing their chances.
-
06-Dec-2010 10:17 | | richie - Sorry Sapman you've got that one wrong!
The idea of scoring more than you concede has been tried unsuccessfully many times. The last team to try it in the prem I think was Newcastle under Kevin Keagan Its entertaining but it doesn't work!
All successful teams are built on a sound defense.
True Fulham only scored after a clash of heads, which had our defense in disarray, but its not true that we are comfortable when in front - 2 up we loose 3-2 remember? (Shit! forget that I don't want to remember) it wasn't off side not even slightly, catch it on youtube, its also "untrue" that our defense was o.k Fabski's shot stopping skills saved us more than once. I'd have to say we rode our luck.
I agree our attack could and should be more clinical, but in truth thats not why we lose or draw. At times our defending has been schoolboyish. Go see any decent sunday afternoon kids game and you'll see defenders clearing their lines.
Kosh shows all the signs of being a top class defender for the future, but centre halves/ central defenders come in two's. Likewise its a defensive unit, think of our famed back 5. Although I think Djourou & Squilla are our best partnership as of now I do expect Kosh to develope the partnership needed, he just needs time to adjust to the prem.
We are in need of a well drilled properly organized defense if we are gonna progess and start winning. Its what we need to ballance the level our fantastic attacking side of the game deserves.

06-Dec-2010 11:46 | | richie - Worryingly Arsene seems to like things a bit Kamak
AW said
"The teams close us down so much high up because they know we play through the middle"
"I push my midfielders a bit up at the start to give us more room to build up the game"
"When you come to the ball we are always under pressure, SO SONG IS A BIT NATURALLY UP BECAUSE I WANT HIM HIGH UP"
"I AM COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. SOMETIMES IT LEAVES US OPEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK."
"We want to play in the other half of the pitch and therefore, we have to push our opponents back"
"But my philosophy is not to be in trouble but to fool the opponents into trouble"
Richie says;
If this is AW's idea then to me its worrying in the extreme because Arsene doesn't seem to mind leaving the back door open o.k. not wide open but open nonetheless. The idea of trying to fool the opponents into trouble is o.k but only if the opponents are tactically nieve. If we are playing a team who can adapt tactics onfield or change systems at their managers behest as some have recently (from 451 to 442) then we aren't fooling anyone except ourselves. All defense's in the prem need cover our more than most at the moment.
-
08-Dec-2010 13:34 | | SAPMAN
but i didnt say that we should score more than what we concede..i only said that we must be more ruthless and kill of games
what i meant about konscielny and defence is that our defenders arent so bad as the WHOLE of the team;s defensive play...u defend as a team...if song and arshavina nd nasri cant be bothered to chase back and kons and squil are looking at three opponents coming at them ....it aint their fault..... for instance..where was the def/mid to mark dempsey before releasing camara for the goal? where was rosicky when the young aston villa midfieler controlled and shot at our goal unhindered?
as for not feeling comfortable at 2-0 ..thats natural ..cause a) our defence is practically new b) they get no cover from midfield c) our strikers dont make them feel comfortable by striking out any idea in opponents minds that they can get back to us
when an opponent sees arshavin making silly smiles while in an open goal and misses it..he shows complacency...the kind of complacency that the oppononet does nto like and thus will seek to punish you.......this idea must be eliminated from our opponents minds and the only way to do that is to stuff them with a 4-0 in first 20 minutes ( like bergkamp pires henry and ljunberg would do) and then watch them pick up their pieces while we rest players ...
