It was a harsh reality that after our first win against Chelsea in more than 5 attempts, there was absolutely no time to bask in the glory of what was a fantastic result and performance. We were on the road to face a Wigan who had embarrassed us in the same fixture last season, knowing nothing more than a win would provide evidence to the claims that we had turned a corner and become genuine title contenders.

Evidence to the contrary came to light almost as soon as Lee Probert had blown the whistle for kick off. Arsene Wenger’s wholesale changes, eight in all, may have had some of you questioning his tactical aptitude, but I remained confident, asserting firstly that the eight replacements would never let their colleagues’ efforts against Chelsea be devalued and secondly, that they all had a point to prove after being selected in what was essentially an Arsenal ‘B’ team.

Wigan (as if they were the only ones who listened to Theo’s post-match interview on Monday) pressed us high from the get go, while we looked shaky and constantly forfeited possession in silly areas of the pitch. In the 18th minute this cost us as N’Zogbia cut inside Eboue from the right, tapped the ball past Koscielny and took a tumble on the edge of the area after minimal contact which Probert deemed to be inside the box and awarded a penalty. In real time I had no arguments, but having seen the replay the contact was indisputably outside the area. A well taken penalty by Ben Watson made it 1-0 to the home side.

We were looking for a response and for the next 20 minutes it didn’t come. An injury to the unlucky Diaby who up to that point had looked like our best player in possession meant that Wilshere would get his second run out in 2 days and his introduction seemed to settle the team somewhat. With the game bereft of chances for either side it looked like we would be heading into the break a goal down. Out of nowhere a Chamakh chip to Bendtner presented him with a tough opportunity which he took cleanly on the bounce, the ball popped up after a good save and Arshavin, whom thus far had been at his wasteful best, acrobatically volleyed the ball across goal and into the back of the net to make it 1-1. Fortunate though it seemed, it was soon even better news as a revitalized Arshavin won the ball in the centre circle, brought it forward and played it through to Bendtner who turned two encroaching defenders well and made no mistake side-footing it past the keeper low and hard to put us 2-1 up at the break.

At half-time my thoughts had not been that we would have to press on and score a third to kill the game off because, despite our defensive frailties this season, our away form had been such that we had often seen games out with a single goal advantage (Everton, Blackburn etc).

The second half began the same way the first had ended. Not much goal mouth action of note from either side, a Chamakh header from a corner went wide but it did not seem so vitally important to be putting these chances away because our grip on the game had tightened and Wigan had lost the attacking verve they had begun the game with. In the 70th minute we had carved Wigan open with a great passing move that ended with Wilshere playing a great lofted ball through to the onrushing Arshavin who, in my opinion, should have done better with the finish. He created room for himself with a great run and first touch but seemed to lose concentration with his shot, which Al Habsi did well to stand firm and deny.

Next came a moment borne out of pure frustration from Wigan’s most potent attacking threat on the night, N’Zogbia. After having just been involved in Wigan’s best chance of the half, taking a through ball down perfectly into our box (only to be denied by a fantastic save by Fabianski), N’Zogbia lost the ball in a tackle to Wilshere and decided it best to get his own back by pushing his head into Jack’s face. I hesitate to call it a full-blown head-butt because there wasn’t much in it, but any retaliation like that and you are going to rightfully see red. Petulant, and downright stupid and a moment that I was looking forward to writing about as the point of no return for Wigan; Down to ten men, and facing a now composed Arsenal side with a quarter of an hour to play. But this seemed to effect the players negatively as they seemed to take their foot off the gas. A corner conceded with 81 minutes on the clock, an awkward ball knocked in – a little too deep for Fabianski to risk going for it, caught Sagna by surprise too - the ball was headed back across the goal and Squillaci, the wrong side of the man he was marking, had little choice but to force the ball into his own net. 2-2, just great. I immediately regretted the posts to my twitter page laughing at Zigic’s ‘hand’ in Lee Bowyer’s last minute equalizer the night before - I should know better. This would become all the more poetically hurtful as Samir Nasri (who was brought on with Theo as a last throw of the dice by Wenger) saw his freekick blocked by the hand of a defender in the Wigan wall, in the box no less, nothing given.

The fulltime whistle was blown and with it came the all too familiar feeling of missed opportunity that has plagued our season. Wenger says the team who finds the best consistency will win the championship and you can’t help but agree with him. Unfortunately, given our current form we seem to be amongst the most inconsistent of the teams challenging for honours. I’ve tried to let the poor refereeing decisions slide, in actual fact there were two game changing errors made by the man in black last night, however it hardly seems like a poignant complaint having seen an officiating error lead to United dropping two points the night before. So too have I tried to keep the blame away from Wenger (the more fickle demographic of our fans have probably already changed their Wenger tune from ‘genius’ to ‘mug’ within 48 hours), however with 8 changes to the side you can’t help but admit that although it was a statement of his belief in the strength of our squad, it was a risk by the manager and evidently a gamble that didn’t pay off.

Where does this leave us now? Well, we have another potential banana-skin on the weekend against a Birmingham side that are solid at home, having drawn with the league leaders midweek. After that it’s a massive game against Citeh at home. We are 2 points behind Citeh with a game in hand and 3 behind league leaders United who have a game in hand over us. So altogether, last night’s result is hardly the end of the world, just majorly frustrating after such a good win on Monday.

DrakeGoona Player Ratings:

Fabianski – 6 - Not much to do but other than the equalizer did well when called upon

Sagna – 8- Our best player on the night, mopping up after sloppy defending by the others, ironic that he was one of the unchanged players.

Squillaci – 4 - Looked out of his depth against an almost toothless Wigan side.

Koscielny – 6 – Got better and better as the game went on, made some crucial interceptions.

Eboue – 5 – Looked sluggish, tried too many flicks in areas that experienced fullbacks should know better.

Denilson – 6- Did what he does, anchored the midfield, played the simple balls, tidy but didn’t penetrate.

Rosicky – 5 - Ineffectual as Cesc’s replacement today

Arshavin – 5 – …and would be less if he hadn’t scored! Pass completion and work rate were poor as ever. Step up Andrei!

Bendtner – 5 – Same as Arshavin, got a goal but was so disappointing in possession, maybe lack of match fitness in his case.

Chamakh – 6 – Worked hard as always, but needs to have more of an eye for goal, not something I should be saying of our striker.

Wilshere (sub) – 7 – Worked hard, stabilized the team with his presence, set up some good chances and never hid.

Diaby/Theo/Nasri – N/A -

It not the end of the world if you expect to win fuck all - so I suppose you are correct.

For any team with title aspirations it was a disaster - but I guess that's not us.
  • MeanLean

That is nonsense. Drawing a game does not mean that you do not have title aspirations. I suppose Man U drawing at Birmingham means that they do not have a chance either.

It was a very frustrating result, especially after Monday but don't go over the top.

Very disappointing how it happened, but we'll bounce back. If Cesc had played and we'd only made 7 changes, can't help but think we would have played much better.
And only 2 points from the top...
  • CHGooner  - Denilson - there's your answer

Think back 48 hours to how we played in midfield. Sharp, incisive winning tackles and moving the ball forward quickly and puposefully. None of this 25 passes to go nowhere, but real intent, creating real problems for the opposition. A joy to watch.

Denilson - what does he do? Lollops around the centre circle and plays safe 5 yard square balls to make hisstas look good. A total fraud, and the moment hewas namedin the line up I knew all our goodwork against Chelseawould be undone. I detest this player.

We wont win the title as long as we have a keeper who is scared of crosses and the Chuckle brothers at CB.Not once in the 2nd half was i confident we could hang on.This team just cannot concentrate for 90 mins.As for Eboue at LB was that in Wengers christmas cracker. We are in a fight to finish top 4

Assuming that you do not already know that the future holds, I could say the same thing I guess.

I base my thinking on our position half way through the season, with the team having played the top teams away. Although its much easier to just say we cannot win.

Diaby and Denilson in midfield.Wenger is just taking the piss.Bringing on Walcott and Nasri with 8 mins left.Do me a favour.Pick your best team every game.We dropped 2 pts because of Wengers arrogance. The good work v Chelsea was thrown away.We need a CB signed in Jan either Cahill or Samba as SS18 and Kos are just not good enough and a DM because without Song we have NO one.And please Wenger bring in a DEFENSIVE COACH to teach us to defend set pieces

Guys seriously, why are we so negative?

We would have taken 4 points from these two games before hand so why are we grumbling now we have them?

Ian - with respect Fabianski has been a revolution this year, and in my own (admitedly biased) opinion he's been one of the top keepers in the league. He has saved us points in multiple games so Arsenal 'fans' need to get off his back.

Why can't we win the title? We start the new year 2 points off the top and ahead of Chelsea. I still maintain that we have one of the strongest squads in England and come the end of the year that will show. I'm not saying we WILL win the title, I'm saying we CAN win it.

Arshavin 5 Denilson 6.I suggest you give up watching Arsenal.Arshavin tries to pass the ball forward ie the Bendtner goal Denilson never passes it forward. He is just a sideways tosser who makes David Hillier look like Iniesta.
We will have our usual end of season collapse and be lucky to get fourth place because Wenger will not strengthen.Oh well we will win the Mighty Carling Cup

Agree with you all the way Goonerfish.

I do not understand how some people can start the season so negative, suggesting that we are nowhere as good as Chelsea and will probably drop out of the top four then moan when we draw away from home. You can't have it both ways.

If we beat Birmingham on Saturday and City at home then I would have signed up to this draw before hand.

We should have won and it is bloody frustrating that we didn't but pretending that we didn't make big changes to accommodate the fixture pile up and that 'this team' cannot win the league is weird.

I agree with a comment from Mean Lean.

Should the original 8 come back in at Birmingham and win, and then again v City at our place next week then it’s a very good run over the very congested period. I am very disappointed by the result; however, it was two days after Chelsea. And we go to Brum on Saturday. Had they all played v Wigan we would have struggled late on in the game and most likely lost one or two of them for the Brum game.
A comment that a draw is not the result of a potential champion is ridiculous considering Man U have drawn all but one game away from home.

Yes arshavin 5, denilson 6. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but so much of the game yesterday was screaming out for us to calm down, keep the ball , play our game - and I believed that arshavin contributed more to our lack of cohesion than denilson. Much more in fact. He is constantly redeemed by his assist or goal but look at the difference players with 50% less penetration but 100% more work rate had against Chelsea. There's a reason he was dropped for that game!

    @ ML

I've got no complaints with Wenger regarding rotating the side for last night's game. My only issue is that he should've played our number one centre-back and that has been Djourou in Vermaelen's absence. I don't know what more he has to do in order to get an extended run in the backline. The partnership of Squillaci and Koscielny hasn't been effective thus far IMO.

Wenger sent out a very strong team to face Wigan. The likes of Chelski and Liverpool would be crying out to have some of our "second string" players.

Haven't seen any of the goals due to being at the hospital, so I can't make any comments on individual performances, but from what I've heard from Wenger, it appears that a draw was a fair result.

Keep the faith fellow Gooners. We're still in the title race.

Firstly, I hope everything is ok and you are not in for anything serious. Your views have been missed.

Onto football matters, Wenger has said recently that he has to ease Djourou in slowly and not play him too much too soon as he spent a year out with injury. Perhaps the medical team have had a work in Wenger's ear regarding his knee, who knows. But clearly he is in top form right now.

If I was in Wenger's seat and I could have played Djourou in two of the three games then Chelsea and then Birmingham would have been my choices considering their strength in the air.

I think Squillaci has had a dip in form and hasn't looked assured for a little while now.
  • Micky D  - You what? You what you what you what
    avatar
What you want in pro football is someone to keep hold of the ball. Chamakh does this well - Bendtner not so. Nicklaus is fine around the six yard box but that's about it. Nothing against him but not in the same league as Chamakh.

What do you what from your key midfielder? Making things happen ... Rosicky was tidy but didn't create anything of note so I maybe 5 is a little harsh but no more than six in my book

Best player by far ........ Sagna (you would have to be a decent player yourself to understand why but it has to do with his reading of situations and his positioning was excellent)
  • Craig  - FABIANSKI
    avatar
ARE you MAD! Please tell me why he was where he was? He should have seen the flight of the ball and stayed on his line then he would have been able to catch or punch that ball away! He goes missing he has no concentration span and he WILL LOOSE us more points than he will make us! Give Szesney a chance....
  • dkgooner  - Defence still all over the place...
    avatar
... from set pieces. This has been a major problem for at least 3 seasons now and still hasn't been sorted out. I doubt frankly that it ever will be because Arsene isn't interested in good defenders otherwise he would buy some quality. Just go to 101greatgoals.com and watch the Wigan equalizer.
    1) Fabianski first moves as if he's going for it, then stops and is caught in no man's land.
    2) Wigan have a tall striker who's strong in the air - who is the Arsenal player going to challenge with him for that corner? TR7. For JC's sake, it doesn't take rocket science to work out a pre-game strategy for set pieces. Big striker, put a big player on him - Bendtner or Chamakh for example. No organisation whatsoever and that's down to the coaching and/or pre-game planning (or lack of it in this case.)

No, it's not the end of the world, but we're dropping points CONSISTENTLY because of this one issue and it's not being addressed and that's why we are unlkely to win the Premiership. I would like all of you who are members of the "be positive" school to come on here and say you are comfortable or confident watching this Arsenal team defend a 1 or 2 goal lead against ANY other team. There was a time when we could be, but those days are long gone. Even 3-0 up against Chelsea, I didn't feel confident.
  • DJ Dragonfly

    Cheers ML.

The hospital visit was just a precautionary check up, but I've also been very busy with work and family commitments of late.

Djourou is a class act and I can see why Wenger is easing him back shortly. It's just a bit frustrating seeing the link up of Squillaci and Koscielny because I don't think they compliment each other very well.

I've got so much faith in those squad, I am convinced that we will end our trophy drought at the end of the season. Once these set of players pick up their first silverware together, watch them kick on.

Denilson makes timely interceptions, and the stats bare this out, but his outings in the prem have been limmited, and so his play like many of those who played yesterday was rusty. We all agree Songs a better DM but Denilson's a reasonable understudy. Sideways passing can be a player with the balls weakness or it can be the result of teammates not making themselves available in forward positions, its a 2way street. Shava should make forward passes he's an attacking mid ofter all! Look what happenes when Song moves forward making attacking plays everyone jumps on his back and criticises. Our mid like the rest of the team looked exactly like it was! A team thats hardly had enough prem- time played together. Disjointed
  • richie  - I too wished we still had Sol
    avatar
I know AW wanted Sol to stay but he married a Woman from the north east who wanted to live near her family, knowing he doesn't have long prem time left to play & knowing he wouldn't neccessarily have been AW's 1st choice CB he choose the Toon for family reasons. CB like Sol even at his advanced age don't come cheap!
  • richie
    avatar
We've lost consistantly playing Kosh & Squilla. I keep saying CB's come as pairs. Squilla looked ok alongside Djourou. Kosh looked good along side TV early on and Kosh looked o.k along side Djourou.
TV often rises to meet crosses Djourou the same. It reminds me of why Toure looked so good along side Sol, yet terrible along side Gallas. Its not good to say it now now Gallas looks ok along side a proper centre half. Just as Toure did along side Sol. There is a common thread that we should all be able to see.
All the very best with your test DJD.
  • richie
    avatar
Your point is well made. We are dropping points and have been for a while, although I'd argue our current defensive line up is stronger than its been for some time.
I've made the point above replying to DJD that my opinion (made consistantly) is that a combo of a CD & a CH works best for the prem.
I'd class a cener half as a player who goes up for the ball and meets it, heading it out of harms way rather than letting it drop to the ground before playing it out of defense. Or trying to play it out of defense because in the prem there often isn't the time to do that before two players are all over you. Add that to the fact that if a defender doesn't go up to challange for a cross attackers have a free ride (Think Newcastle Think Caroll). Or think Wigan a free header back accross.

I used to think that the only foreign CH's that've played in the prem played for Manu'er. Stam and laterly Vidic. I know one stat no team has won the prem without a CH. Now neither TV nor Djourou are typical CH but they both go up to challenge. A pairing of a CH and a CD works well. Think Sol & Toure or Terry & Carvalho.

2 CD don't work well think Toure Gallas or Kosh & Squilla. Pair Kosh with TV you get a different deal coz TV goes up to meet. Pair Kosh with Djourou who goes up same thing. Its the dynamic's of the pairing's that don't work. AW's been unlucky because he can't play Djourou every game as he's still returning from a year out, and TV's been out forever and a day. Just my opinion for what its worth.

the boys did a fantastic job, though we came out with a draw.wigan were in better shape in terms of agility.we played a team fighting relegation and it is often very difficult palying them like they were at home.

we came from a massive win against chelsea,we had to keep going.

i hope scezny is given more games.the second wigan own goal was lack of knowing where you team mate should be.misplced positions.
overall we did ok,we should expect even tougher test, arshavin's goal was class and of quality, there is still room of improvement.arshavin is a very important part of our team ,hope he knows it,we want our anfield arshavin back. the rest of the boys i wish em happy new year ,the fans ,manager, fellow gooners.

our strikers need to start beeen more clinical.for a team that creates an average of 4 chances pair game.

Not rotating the squad would have been suicide RVP Cesc Djouruo Nasri are important players so i wouldd rather draw with wigan than risk losing any of them long term and thats what would have happened had they started. We are in the exact same position as we were after beating chelsea as manu drew we missed a chance to close the gap we must take the next one and we will be fine. What last night proved is that 1. Squllaci and Kos are not an effective partnership if Vermaelan isnt ready to come straight back into the starting line up twice a week by the end of january and Djouruo is still not ready to play regular football i think we should bring someone in even a loan deal. 2. The squad lacks leaders Cesc Vermalan RVP are leaders but after that i dont think we have anymore. Rosicky and Arshavin are the 2 most senior players in the squad yet when the team needed leadership they provided none someone needs to step up in these games. Had Rosicky been orchstrating our attacks fluently bringing in the wide players creating and finding space for the others to exploit then we would have killed the game off early in the second half and been 4-1 up when Squllaci made his mistake. You generally dont buy leadership players in the squad need to step up, if TR7 and AA23 havent already they never will and its hard to expect leadership from 22 year olds but that is what we will need if we are towin the league this year. We have the best squad of players on paper and injuries havent been crippling like in previous seasons we need leaders of the Veiria Pires Campbell Bergkamp Henry Seaman Lehmann type 3 leaders in a squad is not enough to win the league
  • richie  - Youngsters can't really be expected to be big pers
    avatar
Senior players in terms of age don't mean a thing. Leadership is all about personality. You rightly point out that buying personalities that are leaders on the pitch is almost impossible. Likewise its next to impossible to buy a winning mentality. Cesc leads by example in his play, but he's not a shouter! Neither was Bergy, nor Pires, but they were and are winners.

Sol was and is a defensive organiser, Veiria's massive influence came from his personality he always wanted to win. TR7 ain't an organiser nor a shouter. AA23 I think is someone who wants to win but he doesn't communicate well verbally his body language reminds me of the very worst of Henry at full sulk. Lehmman was a real shouter who definatly communicated with his defense.

At times when watching our boys we've been crying out for a personality, a shouter, a communicater. Someone, to take charge. Anyone to take responsibility. With a new GK and 2 new CB's none can be expected to be in charge. Song's vertually a silent ghost when playing, almost mute! Thats not a criticism its just his personality. Like you with TV still out I'd bring in a player! Wouldn't it be wonderful to bring in a defender with carracter :D it could make all the difference.

Well, surprise, surprise - Diaby is out again for "a few weeks". Diaby on his day is an asset to any squad, but those days are few and far between. He's either the unluckiest guy on the block or he doesn't have the robustness of physique to weather the demands of Premiership (professional?) football. Either way, we clearly have to reckon on him being absent for half of each season, and along with RvP and Djourou, that's three members of our squad in the same box - too many. Maybe Djourou wil recover fully but they seem to be treating him with kid gloves at the moment.
I read that the club will listen to loan enquiries for Carlos Vela and will allow Manuel Almunia to leave. I'm really disappointed about Vela - feel somehow that he has never been given a fair crack of the whip, but there are no doubt things behind the scenes we don't know about. Still have a bit of a soft spot for Manuel - he had a spell when I really thought he might make it, but at the end of the day, he wasn't good enough. Only time will tell how long Fabianski lasts.
I wouldn't be expecting anyone coming in, although God knows we need another centre back of quality. While the current quartet is better than last season's, without TV and with JD still being eased back, we are looking decidedly shaky. But Wenger will not pay - there's no sense expecting that he will suddenly change. I love the guy to bits, but that doesn't mean I don't think his stubbornness and lack of flexibility is a handicap at times.
Writing after ManU's win over West Brom, so 3 points at St Andrews this evening are vital. One thing is for sure - we'll have to score at least 2.
