If I was writing this out on paper with a pen then I would have a dustbin opposite me overflowing with screwed up bits of paper. Never have I started, deleted and then started again a review of a football match so often. Never have I suffered such a mixture of emotions as I did on Saturday from 3pm until I finally dragged myself to bed after 1am.

Even as I write this, late on Sunday night soon to be Monday morning, I still find it difficult to try and jot my thoughts onto electronic paper. It is somewhat late to actually go in depth about the game which is a little strange given the fact that this is supposed to be my thoughts on the game of football but for me, this is a great deal more than football.

What I will say is that the first 45 minutes on show at a packed St James's park put me on such a high. We were clinical, stylish and devastating. Arshavin's pass around the corner for Walcott was magical, Theo's finish was coolness personified. Second later Djourou added his first for the club and then Theo and Van Persie gave us an almost identical goal to the one we saw against Wigan a few weeks back.

There I was watching my Dutch stream high-fiving myself that my team were able to kill a game early but taking the chances presented to them for a change, instead of squandering early efforts then giving the opposition hope. When Sagna crossed for Van Persie to head home after barely 26 minutes on the clock I had entered complacent mode.

'Bring off Cesc and Van Persie at half time, our jobs are done. We need to think about future fixtures'

How I actually wish that had actually happened. Might that have changed the direction of the game and perhaps the madness would not have unfolded quite in the way it did.

I shook my head when I saw Johan Djourou limping off the pitch. It is typical, just give us enough time for the transfer window to shut before Djourou gets a knock. I am praying that it isn't too serious. I am ignoring rumours until I get the full confirmation from the club.

Then it all started to go wrong. The wheels were about to be unscrewed from beneath us. Joey Barton had already crashed into the back of Andrey Arshavin who had dragged the ball away from our thuggish opponent. Barton's 'challenge' on Diaby was reckless and could have quite easily resulted in yet another break for Abou Diaby.

It is very easy for all of us to say, he is a professional footballer who is getting paid x amount of money and should control himself. I am sure if Diaby was a machine who was cut off from human emotion then he would have dusted himself down and walked away gingerly.

We are talking about a man who was 'attacked' by Dan Smith for it seems, no reason. He had his ankle shattered and has still suffered as a result of that injury. We are talking about a man who had studs from Paul Robinson high in his leg without a foul being given. We are talking about a man who had his ankle stamped on by Michael Essien at Stamford Bridge, given his lack of playing time this season due to injury that is quite a few assaults from players and I am sure I have missed out a few more.

I cannot fault Diaby for seething after such a dangerous tackle, especially as the referee did not blow his whistle for a foul. Abou Diaby saw red so there was not going to be any rational thought behind his actions.

Many people who are insulting Diaby's behaviour are the same people who have been wanting the same fight as 'a Patrick Vieira' a player who stood up for himself and did not allow the opposition to bully him.

I have only two regrets on that incident. One that another Arsenal player was not close enough to pull Diaby back before he grabbed hold of Barton and two, if he was going to get sent off then he may as well have stamped on his leg or broken his nose.

Enter Phil Dowd.

Arsenal fans were pulling their hair out a few days earlier against Everton for some very strange refereeing from Lee Mason. A northern referee from Bolton who had studied in Liverpool. He was bad, very bad but Dowd was worse.

I don't like using the word incompetent, because that implies that the man in charge is trying to do the job to his best ability but is making accidental mistakes.
I'm sorry but I am not buying it. I am not buying that a qualified referee can decide to ignore a sliding follow through into the back of Arshavin and then crashing into Diaby's leg and then flip out the yellow card for Eboue kicking the ball away or for our keeper holding on to the ball.

The first penalty was soft in the extreme. Koscielny didn't push or trip Best, he reached his foot to get the ball and the striker fell over.

Their second penalty was just taking things too far. There was absolutely nothing to give a penalty for. I thought the referee and his assistant were supposed to be 100% sure before making a call. Well judging by the decisions up until that point it was clearly the right one for the officials.

Leon Best did also have a perfectly legit goal disallowed for offside which shows how ridiculous the officiating was on the day. Did they actually get more correct decisions than wrong ones? Well luckily for Newcastle they were only penalised once and that would be repaid with a mystery penalty shortly after.

Joey Barton's dive when Rosicky challenged in the air was ridiculous, not because he tried to win a free kick because most players would have played for it in that circumstance but he looked so obviously like acting and not an actual foul. Yet, Dowd gave it.

Take nothing at all away from Tioté's strike. It was a fabulous hit from distance and curled into the corner of the net and Szczesny who had a good game couldn't reach it.

Whilst the refereeing was an absolute disgrace and with a fair impartial referee the result would have seen a different result the team have to take a large chunk of the responsibility for not stamping their earlier authority on the game.

Our greatest strength is keeping the ball. We pass and move better than any team in the Premier League, probably in Premier League history. We panicked and continuously gave the ball back to a Newcastle side who had nothing to lose. Dowd did all he could to give them the advantage their craved but Wenger and Arsene have to address the panic that sets in once we concede after developing a healthy lead. The players have to take responsibility collectively and wrestle back control of a game that they should win.

To make matters worse Van Persie scored a late winner which was ruled out for offside. He was level with the defender. So I am being told that Louis Saha was onside in midweek and then Van Persie is offside?

At the full time whistle I lay face down in my bed trying to deal with my rather intense emotions, my nine year old daughter walked in and asked if I was ok. How must a football fan look to people who do not live and breathe the game?

I was wallowing in my mini depression and refused to believe that Wolves would take anything from Manchester United. I usually have that hope that our rivals will lose points but have that snatched away often late in a game. Amazingly we had actually gained a point on Manchester United after Wolves battled hard to beat last seasons Champions.

In the cold light of day would you rather lose to Wolves who are bottom of the league or draw at Newcastle? Obvious given the circumstances we should have taken all three points and stepped two points nearer but Manchester United and their over rated squad have some much tougher tasks coming up away from home than Wolves.

What a torturous weekend of football, I think the international break has come at a good time for the sake of my health.

Yes, I agree. The PL is showing its lack of quality, not the presence of it, by games like the Newcastle/Arsenal one. As an Arsenal fan, I'd have preferred 0-0 to that dandelion defending. And that goes for both sides.

I agree, too, that Diaby is taking waaay too much of the blame for this. Tomas Roscicky's contribution, if you could call it that, is much more deserving of criticism.

In spite of the game, Arsenal gained a point on Man U. But I'm more concerned about the serious affect to Arsenal's collective mentality. Because now, Arsenal aren't safe with ANY score, even 4-0 at half time.

Agree with many of your sentiments ML. It's crazy that even with such a terrible collapse and confidence-sapping turn of events it's still difficult to place the blame at any one player's door or even give any member of the team a truly bad mark.

A very, very odd game. Thank god it won't be like that every week.

Well done. These are fairest ratings i have seen on the day wilshere and fabregas were not as instrumental in contribution as Diaby and co. I think some people pretend to understand Diaby but dont. He is 26 and his career has not picked up becos of thugs like Barton. Now Barton calls him stupid and no one sees anything wrong. If he broke Bartons leg he would have been condemned. look at what happened to a world class player like eduardo. I think some think arsenal players are animals ready for slaugther

    Spot on mate.

How are Arsenal supposed to win the PL with this blantant bias from the refs and the xenophobic press against us?

If it wasn't for Arsenal I would stop following football.

WOW, I could of wrote that piece myself!! Never has anyone summed up my emotions about a game quite down to a tee! !

And your exactly right about Diaby!

    ML,

I feel sorry for you genuinely. I can really feel your anguish. You clearly still have that tight emotional bond with the team that myself and others have (very sadly) lost over the past few years, I was still shocked and disappointed by saturday but in reality I felt that as soon as it went 2-4 it was a case of whether it would end 4-4 or 5-4. Your emotions and your passion mean that you look to blame others, Barton, Dowd, linesman whoever, rather than confront the reality. THAT IS ARSENAL!! A bit like Keegan's Newcastle, brilliant, exciting at times but ultimately too seriously flawed to win what they should. Barton is a horrible, nasty piece of work but that was no 'horror tackle'. It was even questionable whether it was a foul at all. Diaby reacted ridiculously and deserved to go. Even so, we had a 4-0 LEAD and we were halfway through the second half for goodness' sake! it was comical the way we panicked and lost all shape and discipline. I know you still revere Wenger but the teams he did have with real reserves of mental strength and courage went when the last of the old gaurd who he'd inherited finished.

This is Arsenal ML, they cause you pain and anguish because of their faults not because of biased referees or malicious opponents. I have just accepted that this is the way it will be, I have given up on it changing for a long time...

I'm right ther with you ML, my wife and kids avoided me for the rest of the evening.

Phil Dowd was a disgrace to the refereeing profession and some of his decisions were ridiculous at best. Dowd has been our ref on 4 occasions this year, obviously at the weekend but also our collapses against Spuds and Wigan. This cannot be coincidense.

I expressed most of the same opinions on my blog but have to say that our boys need to take some blame. We lost our shape when Diaby left the field with no natural DM to fill the role. Also RVP was offside - just.

However, we must look at the positive. Man Utd's next 4 games are City (h), Wigan, Chelsea and Liverpool all away. In the same time we play Wolves, Stoke and Sunderland all at home. If we are within 2 points of Utd when they come to Ashburton Grove, we will win the title.

to me this is the reason england will never win something on the international stage.if spain should score 4 past england in the world cup,do you you think england will get such a bias referee to help them equalise all 4 goals. i dont think so.refs should be fair to both teams and allow players to be more expressive on the pitch. in england if u are foolish in your tackles they see u to be playing with passion.me of all people cannot blame arsenal for the comeback i think the players did well.though best a goal which was clean, the goal he scored came off his hand so that shouldnt have counted the rest u know.

I would start by saying let's go back a little.Wigan v arsenal: There was no contact with Charles Nzogbia by konchelny and a penalty was awarded Arsenal v ipswich: prinsk offside goal allowed, huddersfield v arsenal, Bendtner brought down for second penalty. No red card but squillaci was red carded. Everton v Arsenal, offside goal scored by saha given. Arsenal v newcastle: RVP sandwich by 2 defenders in the first half, free kick given to N'castle.Arshavin harshly tackled by barton from behind no free kick or a caution. We drew the match cause Djorou had an injury. That injury came towards the end of the first half from a tackle by N'castle attacker.its like Alan pardew went into the break and told his players to roughen arsenal players a bit and they won't get sent off for every hard tackle put in by the referee, that he has got the refereee backing. Arsenal could still win the league but am scared of referee decisions
  • redman  - this wont break up

arsenal are the best team in england weather they win the league this year or not, the brand of football is second to none, but yet they are hated by the referees and not protected enough, the love that manu is shown by the refs is ridiculous, what happened to a skillful tackle a booby moore, maldini or franco baresi tackle, the ref allowed so much thuggery that the arsenal players were probably apprehenisive about going into tackles for fear of a card freekick penalty, never once did the referee slow down the game by speaking with the players to be mindful of dangerous tackles. Wenger has too much dignity to stoke the fire right now as we are target no1 right now. Arsenal fans need to appreciate our players more and support diaby and co, although the subs that came on were not so great, perhaps this is one flaw wenger has he keeps faith with players who dont perform. Up the gunners!!
  • TrueGooner  - Will we ever be allowed to win
    avatar
ML.. I agree with you. I was so hurt and I am still hurt by this blatant cheating we endured in England. The thing that hurts is the headlines that say "Newcastle fight back", "Arsenal Collapse" come on now how did they fight back when clearly we were being cheated off the park? I think it's time the hierarchy at the club start saying something and stop being weak. They can't keep ignoring this because it is too blatant. If Arsenal as a club keeps ignoring this it will continue to happen. They have to start speaking against it. Peter Hillwood and co, time to stand up for the respect of the club. By the way is it that players get fine when they say they were cheated especially when it is clear as day.

A bad result and the bad penny's back. You are so predictable I told ML that I'd expect you as soon as we had a dip.
I thought we'd put some of your lie's to bed long ago so please don't pedal your usual lying wears all over again.
Less the sickness rear's it self again please try to remember what some of us have told you time and again. Although I see you've attempted to muddy the waters slightly compared to your passed efforts by saying fight left with the last of the olg guard.
This of course imply's Vieira was a player without fight. Spec savers anyone?

    Arsene Wengers
invincable team was built without members of the old guard as principal members. True Parlour if he's considered an old guard member by yourself played the most for us. And the great Keown
had a few cameo role's that season. But the defence was built by Arsene as was everything else including team spirit never say die
    attitude and plenty of fight.
  • richie  - losing a man
    avatar
We only defend well in one style we play a high line type of defense. Losing a man and then retreating in mass into our own half was the begining of the end, it invited Newcastle to come on to us and it ended up with players who are clueless as defenders defending in our box. We should've moved to a 3 man mid and kept two up top either Jack or Cesc could've pinged balls up to our forwards. It took us completely out of our comfort zone.

the only way to clear up the doubts into ref's integrity is for fifa to investigate our ref's as the PL and fa would cover up anything they found as long as they get a decent pay off..
it has happend in italy and in france and us english are ust as bad if not worse when it comes to brown envelopes
