That is more like it, I have drained Sunday well and truly out of my system now and am more than happy to look forward to our future games with confidence. When Leyton Orient equalised right at the death at Brisbane road, many a Gooner were gnashing teeth and pulling out hair, I argued the point that an extra game for the second side can only be a good thing and today I feel vindicated for arguing that point.

The balance of negativity after the cup final defeat will have been slightly balanced in terms of morale and it was better than going straight from Sunday into an important Premier league game against Sunderland where the players might have caught a bit of Arry's twitchyness. I am not even sure if that is a word but it will have to do for now.

I spoke pre match about our strikers needing to get their names on the scoresheet as we will need those players returning to full confidence, ok, we need Chamakh returning to full confidence as Nicklas Bendtner apparently does not lose confidence and I have trouble understanding why he gets criticised for that when it is a strength that I would love our whole squad to have. If we had a squad that believed in their abilities at all times then I would bet that we would have already filled up the trophy cabinet over the last five years and appeased the fans and footballing media.

With Robin Van Persie sidelined for 3-6 weeks, probably more knowing our injury luck, we need Bendtner and indeed Chamakh to find the back of the net as often as humanly possible.

The Dane has more than his fair share of critics, I have been one of those in some capacity in the past but what cannot be doubted is his hunger to score goals. It might have only been a plucky League one side who I now have massive respect for but he was in the right place to take home the match ball, he was also able to put away those chances.

His first goal was one that Gooners have complained that we have lacked in the past, a player willing to stay in the penalty area and hang in the air when crosses come in. The timing of his leap and direction of his header was like the typical, traditional English striker of yesteryear.

Bendtner's second is becoming his trade mark for this season, cutting in from the left and bending like Bendtner into the far corner past the outstretched reach of the goalkeeper. When Kieran Gibbs was pulled down after jinking his way inside and outside his man in the second half, Bendtner took over and buried his spot kick into the corner with little fuss. He must have felt pretty assured, yet probably still a little frustrated when being replaced in the second half as it was the biggest indication of Wenger's future thoughts with upcoming games. He probably also thought that there were more goals on the cards for the team.

There was plenty more to the game apart from Bendtner both before and after his contributions to this enjoyable cup tie.

Firstly Wenger surprised us all with the inclusion of Conor Henderson who I was impressed with when I watched the boys down at Barnet in pre season. A young left footed midfield passer, who has good awareness of players around him. For the life of me, I couldn't work out exactly what his position and role was to the team. I threw the question out to the Tweeting Gooners and received about 7 different answers. A sort of left sided, central midfield/attacking role.

Abou Diaby is a player I absolutely love watching and I enjoyed his work last night. I read a stat last night from OptaJoe that Diaby completed all his passes in the time he was on the pitch and he ran the show. Showing the ball to the opposition, ducking his shoulder and striding off into the distance.

Diaby has plenty detractors, I guess there are not many players who don't in our squad but I truly believe that had he avoided his horrific injuries then most would be talking about Diaby has being a true world beater. His Arsenal and International career has had a stop, start feel to it and it will continue unless he somehow manages to go a full season without major injury problems. Thank you Dan Smith, well done you little runt. You have robbed me of watching one of my favourite players at the peak of his powers.

Tomas Rosicky was far more inventive last night than he has been in some time and that is very good to see, especially as he may well have a part to play on the weekend. It was his burst into the box and cut back that allowed Chamakh to score his first Arsenal goal since November 27th against Aston Villa. With Cesc likely to be missing from the squad on Saturday, it is important that Rosicky removes those shackles and proves that he still has what it takes to make an impact in our side. I refuse to rule him out completely after being so impressed with him at the beginning of the season, hopefully he can push on from here and play a vital role in our hunt on three fronts.

I want to give plenty of credit to the opposition last night who came to a side two divisions and some above them and tried to express themselves. They played out from the back and passed the ball well. On many occasions they played around our pressure and threatened further forward. They didn't quite have the quality in the attacking third to trouble us enough but they should be very proud of themselves for giving it a real go.

I am sure you have heard the opta stat but if you haven't then Leyton Orient passed the ball more times than every other visiting team at the Emirates bar one. Not sure which team that was but I guess it doesn't really matter. I think we should give them Henderson, Chuks Aneke and whichever youngster who needs first team experience.

Arsene Wenger rang in the changes after the hour mark. Diaby, Bendtner and Rosicky were replaced for Wilshere, Clichy and Nasri. Gael Clichy played on the left wing ahead of Kieran Gibbs which made for an interesting left side of the pitch.

Less than ten minutes onto the field, Clichy scored his first goal for Arsenal that did not involve deflections from two opposition players like his first against Middlesborough. Eboue's cross was dummied by Chamakh and then missed by Wilshere before Clichy struck a great shot across the keeper and into the far corner.

I found myself secretly hoping for an opposition goal at that point, you could feel Orient's desire to leave the Emirates with a goal to hang on their wall. Something to say they did but they were not able to find that opening even with the introduction of Jonathan Tehoue.

Conclusion

Our victory against Leyton Orient can be seen as a rebuilding job for the squad, a rebuilding of belief is a good place to start. Many of those players can look forward to travelling to Old Trafford in the next round. If Manchester United put out a weakened side then our boys will have a very good chance. A weakened United side is quite likely given that they have a Champions League tie three days later, which will be somewhat higher on their priority list as is the case with Arsenal.

The most important game is Sunderland on Saturday and hopefully we have Bendtner, Chamakh, Rosicky and Diaby all in better shape than they were a few days earlier.

A bit of the gloom has been lifted from the weekend, now onwards to bigger and better things one hopes.

After the match, I am starting to fear that I may be a bit of a Jinx (please God don't let it be so!!!!). After travelling for 45 minutes by bus to watch the Sunday match (as it shall be referred to from this point on) at my in-laws, I thought lemme just follow this one on BBC. Low and behold, 5 goals later, I find myself thinking, more often than not, I watch my team on telly and they throw away a four goal lead (first match I'd seen on telly in 3 months) or lose in the Sunday match.

I really don't wanna be a Jinx, for surely that is a curse!!! Being unable to watch the most beautiful football, and to be allowed to only follow that beauty in the form of text or a crappy stream!!!

Maybe God is telling me to move to London and watch live, where the curse will in turn be transformed into... well into whatever you call the opposite of a curse (mebbe a blessing? I dunno)

Anyway, great bounce back from our team. Well played to our striking Viking! AND

    COME ON YOU GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice report ML. I was impressed with Orient. I dont know if you had marin taylor too, commenting the game but the guy clearly does not understand much about football. He didnt stop saying orient should stop trying to play and play long balls. It drove me mad.

Just wanted to say thanks for your article!

I'm an Orient fan and was there in the away section at the Emirates last night. I appreciate your comments on us trying to play football and not just being 'hoof it' merchants that some lower league teams can be, we do try and play football. I didn't realise we are the team with the second highest passing though, a pleasant surprise!

That said, you outclassed and outpassed us, I hope you go onto win silverware this season, to be honest the football you play I hope gets rewarded!

    Thanks again.

I think we should put this down to the test. For the remaining games it will have to be the BBC for you. When we win the treble then you can take the credit! :D

i like your 3-6 week adjustment for the van persie injury. actually that is what is bumming me out more than the carling cup defeat, the fact that both he and walcott (i've ignored fabregas since all the signs are pointing to him being just about ready) are missing, and what was becoming a rather potent fist eleven will have to be disjointed once more.

however saying that, the boys did a fantastic job yesterday so fuck all the rest. man utd in the quarters should be interesting. but before all that we've got sunderland, then the inbreds with the exclusive gene pool at camp nou.

so despite a once again active sick bay, it seems we have quite a few options to field for both matches. in the offensive arena anyway.
and for me, the three conundrums are diaby (as he has been pretty much throughout his existence as arsenal player, and to a lesser bendtner and arshavin. and how we incorporate and utilise these players most effectively in these matches.

i think everyone admits diaby has all it takes to be a world beater, and yes injuries have taking their toll and led to this stop start episodic player, i feel another issue has been the variety of roles/positions he's had to play. he is just a diffcult player to fit in to the system. pre-jack wilshere, i thought we had finally sorted this out at the start of the season. song, diaby ably supporting a more advanced cesc. now that we have the great jack hope, just where does he go. i do however think that diaby could be crucial against the barcelons.

then we have arshavin. for me, even at his best, it is just not in his nature to do enough to give us that cohesive element on the left hand side. whilst you have bendtner, who is proving very effective cutting in from the left. however is he reliable enough to handle the wide role, particularly with his (comparative) lack of pace. whilst i'm still not sure if he would flourish as the central (lone) striker.

so enough rambling, and back to my initial point, how do we do this.....

    just a thought.

    sunderland:

    .........................................szc.......................... .........

    sagna.............. dj.................. kos ....................clichy

    denilson....... rosicky..............diaby

    arsh............. chamakh ............bendtner

(i feel we can afford to rest song and jack, perhaps with nasri featuring instead of denilson)

    barcelona:

    .................................szc................................

    sagna................ dj .............kos ...................clichy

    ................................song..................................

    diaby ...............cesc................... jack

    ................................nasr.................................. ...

    ..............................bendtner................................ .......

(there really isn't that much pace in this line up though, but should be compact and creative, with bendtner needing to be on top form)

Hi ML, you made a misake, clichy scored the deflected against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium in 2008/2009 season. Nice report though.

Are you sure? I should have sworn it was Boro in a game that Reyes scored an OG and we lost 2-1. *off to check it out*

Agree with the injuries being worse than losing the CC, well at least if we do not pick up the points/victories that we should.

I was also looking forward to the Song/Diaby duo behind Cesc but Jack has now stepped in and grabbed the bull by the horns and stuff.

But seriously Mr. H.Please do us a favor and stick with BBC till the end of the season. That will be much appreciated.I couldnt catch the game as I was in meetings the whole day but I am glad we came away with the win--more especially the clean sheet.Miguel looks like a good one for the future.I have been watching him for some time. And I am impressed with Gibbs crosses.
I want to see more from Bendtner. If he is to be thought of as someone who can hold the mantle in RVP's absence or even possibly give the manager selection headaches even when RVP is fit, we will have to be consistent. He does not have to be perfect but consistent to a very reasonable leve.Good luck to us.Sunderland will be a tough fixture. They dont concede much...So we need to work hard to find space...and we have to make sure we dont concede.Up the Gunners....Keeping that hand on the trigger!!Time for Gunners to get trigger happy!

I made my comment on the pre CC final blog, and then, just like you said on the post CC blog I went into hiding. I didn't want to think or talk about why we didn't play our game.

I only re-surfaced to watch the O's game and really its only now that I can think objectively about our performance in the CC. Even if I'd seen you heartfelt plea I couldn't have helped, not at that point, I don't remember having any thoughts. Normally I would have been in a rage, but I just I retreated inside myself with my dark thoughts.

I have to recognise I'm a missrable excuse for a human being after a loss, I don't even want to be in the company of my own kids, its pathetic I know.

Richie, I don't blame you for staying away and getting it out the system, I was certainly not referring to you post cc blog. It was to those who have nothing good to say about the squad and who only post after a set back.

The CC final shouldn't have happened but the quicker the players forget about it the better.

The CL will be tough but the league is very much achievable. I hope the players convert their disappointment into desire to win our remaining league games if not all then most especially that Manc game.

Interesting reading - even though it's in the Mail :)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1362722/Samir-Nasri- Arsenal-star-argument-Thierry-Henry-problems-William-Gallas.html

Post Orient: Well, I asked them to do us proud and they did. Fascinating to see Wenger's confidence in Henderson and Miquel after the CC final. It's true it was only a League 1 team but all the same, they did what they had to do with style. Worth the risk I thought to get Clichy, Nasri and Wiltshire out there to give them a good memory to take with them into Saturday's game. We all know the 3 points are vital, so I don't think they will need motivating. Bendtner should surely get the nod to start but if we have a couple of goals to the good, Chamakh could come on and give NB a rest. There are bigger challenges looming but 1 match at a time.
Amazing how many negative blogs there are out there after Wednesday. I feel so sorry for people who's only purpose in life seems to be to find the negative in every performance. They must live miserable lives. I'm not saying we should get carried away but a good performance is a good performance no matter who the opposition - look at Everton.
  • richie  - Our captain is our strength & weakness
    avatar
Why didn't we play well in the CC final?

This is going to sound like madness but here goes. Our problem seems to be Cesc. With captain fabs playing we click. Without him we don't. All our play is built around Cesc in possession. He's not only our captain & playmaker he boss's the middle dominating it, he's the main man, everything flows through him. Take Cesc away and we don't flow, which is natural if you think about it. We are like a car without a steering wheel, we've got petrol, an engine, & wheels but no direction. We are incapable of playing our game

None of the above would be a problem if there was another player who could step up and take captain Fabs place. Nasri is a talent, he dribbles beautifully with such balance and he has vision, but not Cesc's vision. We all know that Shava has increadible vision and immense technical talent, his vision is often too intellegent for his team mates, countless times I've watched Shava deliver a defense splitting pass thats come to nothing because no one's read it.
But we all know Shava ain't the one to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and boss it.

Likewise Rosicky who seems to have lost his way recently. I think Arsene expected our No.7 to develope into more of a play maker. He's talented but things don't flow through him and he's never gonna boss the middle.

Who does that leave? Immediatley realistically only Jack which is a lot of weight to put on the young mans shoulders. I have little doubt that one day he will boss the middle and he has got vision but he's still a work in progress. If Diaby could stay fit for long enough we might've been in a position to judge him as the force he could be.

This is a little bit like deja vu, once it seemed like we couldn't play without the great Thierry D Henry. Partially true, when you build a team around one player its difficult for any team to play when for whatever reason you take that player away. When TDH left suddenly the other players stepped up remember anyone? No one wants to get rid of Cesc so whats the answer? Is Cesc our problem?
  • MeanLean
    avatar
    Richie,

You make some very interesting points and it was clear that we missed Cesc massively against Birmingham.

Cesc's distribution of the ball is unmatched, there are not many players in world football who can see the pitch and play a pass like our captain can.

I think the choice of Rosicky was not a bad choice, even if his form is not quite as it should. He is proably the closest player to Cesc and it would have disrupted the team the least.

The problem is that he has not played enough to show his best. Remember early in the season when Rosicky had pre season behind him, he looked very sharp and delivered some vital passes against Liverpool, Blackpool etc

Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey could be players who could thrive in that role in future but right now they cannot do what Cesc does.

The easiest way that I look at it is that teams cannot replace their best players, simply because they are the best.

Take Messi out of Barcelona and then they have no one else in their squad who can change a game the way that he does. Take Ronaldo out of Real Madrid and they would be much more predictable and lose so many goals.

It is the same for Cesc and Van Persie. Bendtner has potiental and scores goals but he cannot do what Van Persie does and it is the same with Cesc.

The team has to adapt to the strengths of the players that come in and we have to look for other players like Nasri and co to step up when it is called upon.

Here is to three points today.

Strangely Barca can live without Messi, but they can't play their game without Xavi everything flows through him he's their Cesc he has vision and distribution - I see plenty of Barca (I'm in Spain as of!) Even Ineista as great a player as he is isn't Xavi - Likewise Ronaldo playing with Manuer was indispensable for the goals especially as a midfielder, but he didn't effect their game in that way, with or without him they played in the same way (they just wasn't as effective). Remove Xavi and Barca suffer remove Cesc and we're the same.

The problem seems to be that we can't change our play. With Cesc we play in a certain way. Take him away and we can't adapt. We try to play the same way as if he's still there, and we obviously can't because he's such a big influence. Which is why I say either we have someone who steps up or we change our style of play or our formation or both. No way we can continue to play in the way we do with Cesc without Cesc.

Same thing today against the Makams we try to play the same way no matter the personal. If either Cesc or RvP plays today probably we score, but without??? Trying to play the same way with lesser personal just doesn't work for us.
