1-0.

A score line that many Arsenal fans will be familiar with. Especially those Gooners who lived and breathed the late George Graham days. While we had to endure the anxiety mainly in the second half I will gladly open my arms to a much needed three points.

Before kick off I wondered how many new presents we were allowed to open at once and as expected, the two red and white wrapped gifts came in the form of Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker. I have a theory that Arteta spent his spare time at London Colny whilst registered to Everton FC over the last few years, such was the ease of which he blended into the Arsenal team. His quality was obvious with every touch of the ball. I was interested to see which position he would take up on the field and to my surprise he started the game as the creative midfielder, although he interchanged with Aaron Ramsey at many times.

The team started pretty well and passed well, barely a minute had passed before Ramsey fired wide after being freed by the skipping Arteta. Ramsey was in the inside right position, the Walcott position. He should have composed himself and struck low across the keeper but instead sliced it wide. Arteta's run and through ball was very reminiscent of another player that we used to have on our books. Cannot think who.

Swansea could have scored with their first chance of the game and they should have scored. Unlike Ramsey, wayward finishing was not the issue. The issue was a goalkeeper who is playing right at the very top of his game. Wojciech Szczesny made an amazing point blank save low into the corner after a header from Swansea striker Danny Graham.

I couldn't quite understand why the ball hadn't crossed the line and I was even more amazed when I had watched the replay. It would almost be criminal if the Arsenal team did not provide the defensive foundation that Szczesny deserves right now. He has come back after last season a much more commanding and determined keeper.

Per Mertesacker made one amazing block on Sinclair as the wide man was about to shoot. He looked pretty composed in possession but as Wenger said post match, he will need time to adjust to the frantic pace of the Premier League.

Swansea were starting to frustrate us and our football on the whole was just not quick enough or imaginative enough on the whole to break them down until a slice of luck fell into our lap. The Swansea goalkeeper had rolled the ball out to his defender who was facing the wrong way, the ball hit the back of his heal and Arshavin pounced, curling the ball into the net with his weaker left foot from a very difficult angle.

Typical Arshavin, has the rare ability to consistently be the very best or very worst player on the pitch at anytime. A fine piece of opportunism from the mercurial Russian.

Early in the second half both teams exchanged woodwork kissing. Sinclair curling a free kick onto the crossbar and then Robin van Persie opened his woodwork account for the new season after cutting inside on his right and bending a shot wide of the keeper and unfortunately onto the post.

Yossi Benayoun came on for the tiring Andrey Arshavin as Arsene looked to defensively help his full backs out a little more with extra protection. Benayoun showed some neat touches and looks a real addition to the squad.

As the time ticked away and chances were not being created for the home team, Swansea started to go for broke and throw everything they had at us. At 1-0 with chances spurned it is difficult to ignore the possibility of the team throwing it all away in the dying minutes.

That was so nearly the case when Szczesny showed that he is still human when he came to meet a cross and failed to get there. Graham spun and shot towards an unguarded goal but he couldn't keep over the ball and the ball flew high over the bar.

Lady luck has shown mercy on us today given the nature of our goal and then a last minute chance missed for the opposition that would have nestled into the net during the second half of last season.

Arsene Wenger is right when he says, confidence goes quickly and is slow to build up. The team are refinding their feet and has to do so with new personnel as well as missing first team players. This Arsenal team are still stuck in first gear, there is plenty of internal scope to improve upon and that will come. The most important thing right now was to get points on the board and we got that, we also have a clean sheet to pin to the wall. Alex Song and Gervinho will add defensive and offensive quality to the team.

I still felt that captain Robin van Persie looks a little too isolated at times. Arteta did link up with him in the first half but as the game wore on, we started to drop off him. Gervinho will be important for Robin. He is a player who likes to take on his man and exchange one-two's. He will make diagonal runs across van Persie which will allow van Persie to exploit other areas.

Although very premature, I am looking forward to Arteta and Wilshere swapping positions and playing keep ball. With Alex Song behind them, it has the making of a very strong midfield.

Next up is possibly the toughest task in our Champions League group, Borussia Dortmund away. From now until Tuesday, the new players will have some time together to work on partnerships and understandings in training. Arsene also has the chance to reshuffle his squad a little.

Not the bright attacking and entertaining victory that we may well be seeing from other clubs right now but it is a start. We have started quickly many times over these last six years or so, like the 6-0 victory against Blackpool last season. We know how that ended.

If we can build momentum and get better as the season progresses instead of falling off from a massive height then we may well have a better end result. Plenty more gelling has to happen so I will gladly take these three points and expect improvement. thank you very much.

    good article.

Arteta fit right in. excited about him. he looks like he has a lot of desire to win and show his worth.

    mertersacker was solid.

benayoun looked a little rusty but I am sure he will come around.

not the best game overall, but an important building block...

As I digested the final seconds of the game at The Grove, all I could think about was "A win is a win" and boy was I thankful after a pretty nervy afternoon. If we didn't have a good player in Arshavin it could have been 2 more points lost. But I have to say that our performances in attack were far from impressive. It looks like we lack ideas in the final third. This is surely not good enough if we are to be considered contenders-not pretenders. How many times is Wenger going to keep playing Walcott on the flanks. The kid clearly does not have the skill to be a winger. He is a born center forward.
I was fairly impressed with Arteta.Hopefully he will continue to add some quality to the way we play.Per was also pretty good.
On the whole, the squad has been mixed with experience and that is of course encouraging but it would be crazy to expect us to win a trophy this season. We have realistic shots at the Carling cup and the FA-maybe but the Premier League and the UCL are well beyond our grasp. The team is still distinctly average compared to our primary rivals. It becoming clear that it's not just a matter of the players we have but also the tactics Wenger instructs his boys to play with.We are looking more and more easy to defend against and predictable by the game and though we have made some fairly good addition to our team, our style of playing may well be our Achilles heels.

Chezzers kept us in the game today. Thank gawd for our young pole. This is a deeply mediocre side, the worst since the dog days of GG, and am very worried about the rest of the season.

@Jekyll..my thoughts exactly. We will be lucky to make 4th especially if we do not strengthen in the January window..and if our style of play is not tweaked.
No disrespect to Swansea (quite ironical given that they played us off the field for large periods) but 1-0 is definitely worrisome and disappointing-not just because of the scoreline per se but or lack of incisiveness and fluidity.

    What do you expect?
Still well and truly understrength, and almost a new side.....we get the result in a game we probably would have lost last year, and you still want to look for the negatives?
Arteta was fantastic considering it was his first hitout,Szczesny was his normal brilliant self,Gibbs was terrific,The German was very good,Sagna was great,Ramsey was much improved.....did I miss anyone?
    Walcott......very average......give Ox his spot.
    RVP was out of touch.
Gervinho will give us something,as will Song.
Still missing Jack and TV5......how the hell can you all be so downcast????? We have more upside than any club in the League, and you don't win a thing in August.
  • Scott  - the young Pole.

One more thing, six months ago,nobody....except myself and Arsene......wanted a bar of Szczesny, yet now you all live him.
Amazing what happens when a player actually has a little faith shown in him.
Give the team a chance guys.
I tipped Szczesny to be a world class keeper on various blogs the day after his debut and was howled at by everyone........hopefully,I'm right here, too lol.
  • Passenal  - Don't be so quick to judge

I can't believe some of you calling the team average. We have many key players to return from injury and suspension and we will look completely different once the new players have gelled. Try getting some perspective.

I totally agree with you. We are often a little lacklustre after Internationals, it often affects our game. A bit part of our spine is currently not playing either.

We should be judging when these players have a run of games together. I think we will shock a few people even if we do not win the league.

Like I have said, I am expecting a title fight until the day comes that we cannot.
  • stevenup  - wheres the mid field?
    avatar
Watched with relief, a win is a win. But... so often the ball is in play, in the opposing half and gradually it gets passed back and back till Szczesny boots it back up the field. Why cant we run in to gaps like ...erm Barcelona? Arsenal are a passing team. We just seem to have forgotten which direction. We have the men to do it lets just see it going towards their goal!
  • JuniorMeanLean  - Agreed

I agree with this article, especially agree with what you said about Van Persie being isolated (left out).

On a happier note, I believe arsenal played a good match and deserved a win.

  • dkgooner  - Lucky we don't have to play Swansea every week.
    avatar
Well, maybe I was watching a different game, but I thought we were outplayed for long periods. Swansea more than deserved a point - Sinclair and Dyer look like proper wingers - haven't seen Sagna get skinned so often for a long time.
Positives - 3 points of course; Arteta; Mertesacker; Szczesny; Arshavin had one of his better days.
Negatives: Lacking cohesion and ideas in the final third, but there's time I guess to get things to gel. Song will be an improvement on Frimpong (who yesterday played like he's putting a lot of pressure on himself - still tries those naïvely optimistimic through-balls into a clump of opposition players). Gervinho will add some thrust going forward.
I agree Walcott isn't a winger, but what is he? A centre forward? Not tough enough. Owen was good at holding the ball; Walcott is very easily knocked off it. His final pass is still abysmal 95% of the time. Spent a lot of time yesterday whinging at the ref. He's a one-trick pony - pace, so he's dependent on others to produce the right ball. Personally, I still think he's an over-hyped BGB, but what do I know? He gets picked for England and Wenger plays him whenever he's fit. Baffling. Chamberlain can't possibly be worse.

walcott didn't have a good game, but he is pretty good and happens to be our leading scorer. i think the doom and gloom is a bit over the top.

That was quite harsh on Walcott dude.............!!!
He has got an eye for goal thats for sure and has got a neat finish on him - that is something most of our players lack......they are all wonderfully talented but when it comes to finding the back of the net they all look lost.........Even Van Persie who has a great scoring record hits the woodwork far too many times!!! He has definitely improved last season and started off well this season....lets hope he continues the good form....
  • dkgooner  - Just an opinion
    avatar
It's just my opinion IGF - I've never rated him and I find all the hype around him baffling. He looks good one game in 10 - the rest of the time he disappears from view. Maybe he'd be better in the middle as he himself seems to think. Time will tell. I'm quite happy to admit it when he's had a good game, but I just feel they are few and far between and other players get a lot of stick while he seems to be our "Teflon Tony".
  • dkgooner

    Forgot to say - I know it's a minority opinion. :)
  • Man United Killer  - Most people not keeping it real
    avatar
Minority Report eh?Tom Cruise anybody?I agree with 95 percent of your points.Whiles we have showed some intent and signed some players this window, winning the title is not going to happen this season.at least not with this squad. We will be lucky to make 4th unless we make some changes.
Walcott is not the only over-hyped player in the team.Ramsey and Wilshere are equally overhyped, Koscienly is an intelligent player but he is not first team material..I dont want to get started on Djourou. The general consensus on this website is that 'he is world class'..and 'he is a youngster'...talk about large scale humor..In Arsenal, the term 'world class' is often abused and misused. In England, people are pretty darn good at doing that.If players like Djourou and Ramsey and Walcott are world class it makes me wonder what we call players like Cesc,Messi, Rooney,Gotze,Hummels and Aguero- to name a few..Someone once said he believes Wilshere is going to be better than Cesc,Really? Was that to start a joke? What didn't we think Owen couldn't do when he started to shine? And it makes me wonder what kind of fans we have these days.We have turned into a club that accepts mediocrity and substandard quality. After struggling to beat Swansea (a game in which they played us off the field for large periods), Arsene Wenger is shameless enough to spout rubbish like "we have gained our confidence back"..if this kind of unconvincing performance against a newly promoted team inspires confidence, I am left with a dropped jaw and a mind that is trying to fathom if Wenger is truly the Wenger he was.

I like how you and your little movement of Wenger faithfuls wallow in oblivion.Though you admitted that this squad would not win the trophy before our flurry of transfer dealine activities, you maintained that we would still qualify for the UCL next season.
I find it funny that your manager did not think so come transfer deadline.Show how organized he is-doesn't it. So tell me ML, I got one nice question for you-do you think we will qualify for the UCL this season?

    avatar
I´ve never understood why some people would like to go back to the GG era? Can anyone explain it to me? Back then we didn´t have the so called "World class players". Had any of our old players distinguished themselves on the world stage? Unless I missed something our famous English back 5 didn´t have an International title between them. Our strikers rarely got any international call ups and can someone remind me if we ever had a midfielder in the national squad?

We as a club back then, were famous not for the football we played but because we were difficult to beat. Many of the bloggers on this site don´t stop talking about how we were great in the GG era, when we often won 1 nil! Suddenly those very same bloggers are complaining about a hard faught 1 nil victory and are upset that we don´t have world class players. Double standards or what?

IMHO RvP is the only "world class" player in the squad (in his position). Shava could´ve been called WC in the passed when he was with Russia but (not withstanding being grateful for his last excellent strike) he´s very rarely been WC for us. Even the recently departed Nasri can´t be called WC unless you make the statement WC potential. Cesc on the other hand has been part of a World Cup & European Cup winning squad, plus on an international stage in the CL with us he has shown his WC credentials.

For many years under Arsene Wenger we have for the first time in our clubs long history been spoilt by having actual WC players in our squad. That is not an opinion of mine its a simple statement of fact!
Why in recent years have we had so many WC players?
Was it because we were hard to beat under GG?
Was it because under GG we were gonna play CL?
No it was because those players wanted to play in a particular style. Under Arsene Wenger they were guaranteed attacking stylish football, thats why all of them came.
I don´t want to go back I want to continue on this route, WC players will grace our ranks again but only if we stay true to the way we have played under Arsene Wenger. Chief AKB! And proud.

Couldn´t agree more Muk WC for me is RvP the rest are that favourite word potential, we´ve got plenty of that though.
