The pattern of failing to take advantage of our rival slip ups continues after another second half where we failed to kick on and take the points from a winning position.

The pre match rumours of Mikel Arteta failing to make the squad due to injury was unfortunately correct. Typically rumours on Twitter turn out to be absolute nonsense, why can't those rumours of Mario Gotze travelling to London for a medical be the one that turns out true instead of yet another first team player being unavailable for selection.

With Wilshere, Diaby and now Coquelin all out also, Arsene had to draft in Yossi Benayoun to play in a midfield trio that had never started together before.

We had made a great start just moments after me bemoaning the fact that we rarely punish teams with our first chance of the game. Andrey Arshavin had drifted into a central position and had taken Alex Song's first time pass into his feet, he spotted the diagonal run from van Persie and slotted a perfectly weighted pass into van Persie's stride, I still don't know why Robin didn't take it earlier but he stalled and then slotted it away with the old chocolate swinger.

Credit must go to Swansea, they are a very likeable side who work hard as a team, closed us down from the first minute and tried to stop us from playing but when they got hold of the ball they were intelligent enough and technically good enough to keep it.

We cannot buy a penalty these days. Whether that be trips, hand balls or shoves. Referee's have tended to wave away our appeals so it was no surprise that Nathan Dyer's accidental stamp on Aaron Ramsey saw the referee award a penalty to Swansea City. Let us call it bad luck shall we? It is ridiculous the way it has gone over the last few months.

If these calls are supposed to mathematically even themselves up after time as we are continuously told then I expect phantom penalties to be awarded to us in all of our big games at the Emirates. Yeah right.

Szczesny couldn't get near Sinclair's penalty and the score was levelled up.

We really should have taken the lead again and I am very surprised that not much has been made of van Persie's second clear cut chance. Benayoun's reverse pass may not have been into his stride but van Persie had a clear run at Vorm and my first impression was that he should have dummied the onrushing defender and slotted with his left but instead he opted for the right again and Vorm made the simple stop as RVP fired his shot straight at him.

In a game of possession we missed the dictating play of Mikel Arteta. Swansea had Leon Britton doing that exact role for them and he used the ball very well. Aaron Ramsey and Yossi Benayoun both swapping positions could not keep the ball as well as Arteta could have done.

I can only assume that Rosicky was left on the bench due to recent illness. Surely he would have been better placed to have replaced Arteta and helped Arsenal keep the ball.

Aaron Ramsey returned back to Wales for the second time in an Arsenal shirt. Once against his former club Cardiff and now against rivals Swansea and on both occasions he was below his best. It could have been so different if his shot from a tight angle went in, instead of being hooked off the line.

Swansea took the lead when Ramsey was dispossessed in midfield and the ball was played across to Nathan Dyer to flash a high shot past Szczesny.

Thierry Henry and Tomas Rosicky were introduced for Andrey Arshavin and Yossi Benayoun just after the hour and it wasn't long after the changes that we grabbed the equaliser. Johan Djourou who had a difficult first half had improved in the second, it was his driving run and splitting pass that saw Walcott go one on one with Vorm, his chipped finish was perfect,

With a fresh Henry on the pitch and the invention of Tomas Rosicky I really thought we would go on and win the game. We had the momentum and the spark to take over the game. Astonishingly we conceded seconds later. So many bad decisions were made from Miquel pushing too far up the pitch and nobody covering for him as was the case for much of the game. Koscielny who was one of our better performers expected Szczesny to get to the ball first, Szczesny came out into no mans land and gave Graham the chance to finish and it all started with Thierry Henry giving away a loose pass from the left.  A real poor goal to give away.

A team who all know their roles and the roles of their team mates do not make mistakes like those. Djourou is not a right back, Miquel is not a left back, Ramsey and Benayoun are unbalanced in midfield and Vermaelen and Koscielny is our strongest central defensive partnership. We currently have too many players out right now and that is contributing to our results.

A team of players unavailable is arguably stronger than the team that was defeated yesterday afternoon in Wales.

Fabianski
Jenkinson Sagna Vermaelen Santos
Coquelin
Arteta Wilshere
Gervinho Chamakh Diaby

It may well be seen as excuse making but we simply cannot reproduce our best form without many key players. At least five, perhaps even six of those players missing are automatic starters, that is more than half a team. The absentees of key players has also meant that Arsene is not able to rotate the squad as much as he would like and we are perhaps seeing that in players like Aaron Ramsey.

While I would like to see another go to player brought into the club, a player that has something special and can unlock doors as well as being on van Persie's wave length, I feel that the key for getting into the top four is to get our injured players back on the pitch and not pick up anymore injuries. That is easier said than done when it comes to Arsenal.

In the end three mistakes cost us the game. The referee awarding a phantom penalty, Arshavin under playing a pass and Ramsey subsequently losing possession and the mess that was the Swansea third a minute after we had equalised.

I would say that had two of our unavailable players been in the starting line up then we could have won this game but credit must go to Swansea City for their commitment, style and attitude. They should be an example to many clubs in this country and I really hope that others try and copy what Swansea have done. It would be great if we can form some sort of relationship with the club and perhaps send some of our youngsters on loan to get more game time at a club who have a similar style of play to ourselves.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was brought on in the closing stages to try and make a difference and I thought he looked very bright, hopefully this will be the start of a bright 2012 for him but it needs to be a bright 2012 for many more. This is such an important season for the squad and the future of many of the players could be dependant of securing the Champions League spots

Dropping six points from winning positions in the last two league games has been harmful but there is time yet, but our form has to change we have to find the form that catapulted us up the table. We have a week to rest legs and hopefully get Arteta and Vermaelen back in the squad, possibly even Bacary Sagna which would be a huge boost even if not 100% at his best.

There cannot be any feeling sorry for ourselves, the players need to pull their socks up and fight because if we don't then we might soon find those above us drifting out of sight.

dream on this team under Wenger has had it, we will fail to qualify for the CL and the clueless board intend to raise the ST again, watch how the attendance will fall at the soulless bowl, we lack bottle, steel, courage, leadership and that is down to one man the dictator Wenger, his team, his tactics and never his fault. it's Arsenal FC not Arsene FC. this has been the same for six seasons always falling short and nothing changes, I for one like many have had enough with Wenger and his failed ideas, his lack of ambition.

whats dissapointing is that United has had numerous injuries too and for the most part they are doing alright.

the second disapointing thing is that for the second straight league game we dropped points from a winning position.

we need that second goal. how i miss going up 2-0. there needs to be an urgency to get that and it seems like the attitude has been oh we're up 1-0, we have it in the bag...

AOC was really good when he came on. more AOC please.

Every team suffers with injuries. It's about having a strong enough squad to cope with them.

Besides, Injuries or not, our squad is packed with a load of dross.

We can't even trot out the whole 'oooh, but we play lovely football' anymore. We were comprehensively outpassed by Swansea last night.

We won't finish 4th, no way. Can't believe that winning the '4th place trophy' is now treated like some amazing achievement.

    We sound like Spurs!

    Anyway, up the ar*se.

Well said Mean Lean. It seems to be groundhog day with Arsenal over the last five seasons. Injuries to key players have been the single most devastating root of our problems.

I defy anybody to tell me that Barca can replicate their best form without Messi, Cesc, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Alves, etc.

It's true that we should have a squad strong enough to cope but at the same time, we seem to be getting the worst luck. For example I can't think of another team that has injuries to all fullbacks at the same time plus key defenders, keepers and midfielders.

The fact that Park still isn't ready and Chamakh is a shadow of the man that first arrived at the Emirates just adds to our dodgy form.

    Very worrying but COYG!!

After the latest defeat, Wenger said the game was lost in suspicious circumstances and because of a penalty that shouldn't have been awarded.

    Sounds like excuses to me.

He goes onto say "in the last games we have made mistakes that are difficult to explain. It is unbelievable, it happened at Fulham the same and again today." In a similar vein, he added "we were unlucky because we got a penalty that was not a penalty, and we made mistakes." Also "we defensively made some mistakes that we should not make."

So the theme developing is that we are making mistakes.

Given that we conceded 3 goals the defence has to take the brunt of the finger pointing. Ok, people go on and on about how shocking our injury crisis is (how many seasons have we endured losing key players to long periods of injury and nothing is done to address this like reviewing the medical staff, training methods etc- surely there is a connection?) - but Wenger could have made a signing over the past 2 weeks the window has been open to help ease the pressure?

The key question is why the defence has been so shocking. Djourou yes is having a poor season. Yes the defensive back four have not been settled. Yes injuries have had an impact - but too many times this season, we have been too poor at the back.

He went onto say "We had a lot of energy in the game but not enough energy". Why?

As it stands (with Man City winning 1-0 at Wigan), we will be 15 points behind the leaders.

With the visit of Man Utd this weekend it could get a lot worse. Anyone who were thinking we could put a run together to possibly win the league will have to admit that their December optimism was misplaced.

We are fifth and the best we can hope to achieve is 4th realistically. But with Liverpool and Newcastle within 1 point of us and our indifferent form, that's not a certainty. A couple of seasons ago Wenger got a roasting for his quote about being satisfied finishing 2nd for the next 20 years or something like that- now, I wonder how many supporters would actually settle for that given how much we have fallen behind?

I agree with you regarding missing key through injuries/ACN but that cannot be an excuse for a lame and pathetic performance yesterday. Any player who plays for AFC has to know how to retain possession and pass the ball quickly and accurately. That is our trademark. Only Barcelona can do that better than us. Even if you Guardiola leaves 2/3 of his starters on the bench, I would bet you my left nut that the reserve players would be more than capable of retaining possession of the ball and make more than 5 passes in a row. We simply could not do any of these yesterday. Worst than the atrocious and un-Arsenal-like passing, we got outworked by Swansea City. They closed us down pretty quickly and effectively while we just stood 2-3 yards from the ball carrier and allowed them too much room to make easy passes. It was as if we had no clue what to do. That is not acceptable and I hope Wenger does make it clear to the players. We have to show more passion and desire to win the game. We cannot allowed a promoted side to play us like Barcelona. When nothing is going right according to plan, any top team aspiring to contend for the title or at least a Champions League spot must find courage, desire, and determination to give more than 100% to win a game again a side playing football in a lower division just a season. Win or lose, there has to be commitment and hard work by all from the first whistle to the last. I did not see that yesterday, I did not see that against Fulham, I did not see that against Wolves, and that is to be avoided at all costs after the tremendous progress that we have made in the last few months. There simply cannot be a return to complacency because I believe we have turned the corner and we do not want to go back. If personnel must be changed, so be it. I actually think that Rosicky and Oxlade-Chamberlain should start the Man U game instead of Ramsey (out of sorts and tired right now) and Arshavin (really no point in starting him) respectively.

Yesterday's result must not be excused by the absence of key players, in my view. Hopefully, we can get back on track against Man U next weekend.

Having had several penalties turned down for us even though they were clear cut over the last few weeks and then getting a penalty given against us for their player fouling our player, can't you see why Arsene would be annoyed about that? Why on earth is that excuse making, it is a fact. Do you not see it that way as a Gooner?

Also Arsene was clear about the team making mistakes and not being good enough defensively at the moment, I wouldn't say that is excuse making at all.

As for signings, I don't know if you know but our squad is already full and it requires players leaving the club before new players can be brought in. There are rumours of Squillaci being moved out so maybe we will have space (squad restrictions) for a new player should Arsene find one that we can buy and that he rates.

The reason for our poor defensive play of late seems massively obvious to me. Go through our line ups over the last few months and show me 2-3 games in a row where we have had a settled defence. I already know the answer, you cannot. Anyone worth their salt knows that a solid defence cannot be built on continious rotation of players, especially one's that are being played out of position. Miquel, Coquelin, Vermaelen, Djourou etc.

You are spot on when stating that my optimism was misplaced about a title push, it needn't had been because we are and were good enough until our players started falling like flies. Since the team lost at Spurs until recently against perhaps Wolves at home I would say that we were capable of making the points back to be involved.

Football is about narrow margins and in all the games where we have dropped points (Wolves, Man City, Fulham and Swansea) we have been good enough to have won those games on other days.

This current crop of available players are not gelling and we probably wouldn't get anywhere near the top four with what we currently have but we have players close to returning. Sagna and Vermaelen are key for us and they make players around them improve and remove some square pegs from round holes.

As I said on Twitter, do you really think that Blackburn Rovers would have beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford if it wasn't for a huge build up of injuries? No, I thought not. That is why they have also lost games of late. Regardless of what squad you have, you cannot compensate for losing 10-11 players.

    Gino,

I am not so sure it is that simple though. We played against a side who all know each other's game, they work together on moving the ball in training and have all developed a good understanding. They pressed us really well and didn't allow us to settle but yes, we should have passed the ball much better than we did.

You say that Barcelona would be more capable of keeping the ball if 2-3 players were out but this is exactly it. We are missing much more than that, almost double in fact. We build up from the back and our full backs are key to that. It is no coincidence that our form has had a massive dip since we lost all four full backs.

I am not excusing the performance, especially some of the ridiculous defensive mistakes but I do believe that it is a big reason for our lack of cohesion on Sunday.

I agree that we need to keep up the fight that we found post Spurs. That made the crucial difference from the team last season and the sooner we get that back, the better.

Comments from Liam Brady was about the closest indication that you're gonna get. But basically none of us know for certain what Arsene has to work with. What is a fact is that Arsenal FC were prudent spenders way before Arsene Wenger took charge of the team. Look at former managers and show me ONE that was a big spender or one that paid large wages compared to other big clubs. Best of luck.

The idea that Arsene holds us back from big spending as if the manager is pushing away money has got out of hand.

Even when Barca put out reserve teams they still tear apart opposition especially that of the quality of swansea an I don't think I'm being harsh when I say that. Swansea were made to look good by the fact that we kept giving them the ball. Our second string side are not good enough and thats because Wenger has filled the team with average players that he feels deserve to keep getting chance after chance. I thiknk he is a great manager and players seem to want to play for him not to mention the style he has brought our club and the boost he has given our youth programme but I think he has shown time after time that he cannot handle transfer business. Football is football and there is no doubt that Wenger has a football brain but the transfer window is business and that is something different. The reason that Spurs are doing so well is because they have a good manager and crafty chariman who knows how to do business and has overseen a good transfer policy. Something needs to change at our club beacuse the excuse used to be that we don't have the money to compete but thats not going to hold water anymore. If we had bought cleverly then we could have a squad strong enought to see us through a season instead of wenger trying to play the same 11 players all the time beacuse deep down he knows the rest aren't good enough.

why kid yourself after building a world class 60,000 seater stadium? If you can't get better players, why pay through your noses and put up with dross like Arshavin, Rosicky, Squillaci, Chamakh, Almunia, Djorou etc. Problems are compounded by the quintessially injured Diaby, Gibbs etc.

Your pathetic chairman has stated today that not qualifying for CL won't hurt, already preparing excuses/justifications for such an eventuality. Better would be to get rid of all the dross. The better players like RvP, Walcott, Vermalen may leave once you are out of CL. Integrate the reserves with the first team and select players from the pool created. Homegrown, virtual nobodys, less risk of fatigue, stress as they would not be called up for international duty sooner. Its win win for Arsene and his footballing principles.

It doesn't matter if we play in the PL or championship or second division. At least we won't kid ourselves.
  • colesy  - To buy or not to buy-that it the question
    avatar
All the signs are that Wenger won't be buying anyone. He seems unable to offload players from the squad and for most people this appears to be the single reason for the lack of activity. Other commentators are not so sure this is the case. Interestingly though, there have been hints that he'll go to the market if the result on Sunday is negative.

All seems a bit strange. He should be clear to the fans and media what the club's position is. He has made it clear he is not a fan of the winter transfer window. Yet he has flirted with the idea of a defensive left back buy/loan - but if they are up to the hilt with squad numbers - how can this be? Surely he can buy or loan players into the club or not?

If the outcome is that he can actually bring in new players, why wait until after Sunday's result? If we lose, we'll be 18 points behind Man City. Too far behind Man U & Spurs also to seriously push them for 2nd or 3rd. Hardly going to make the club more attractive to players is it?

The boards stance is very well publicised. Wenger has money to spend in the transfer market yet all wages both players and all staff have to come from the clubs season ticket sales budget. So although Wenger has more than 50mil in his war chest to buy, the club can´t afford to pay high wage bills.

Whoever Wenger picks from the recomendations of our scouts and asks the board to buy, it won´t be any player with big wage demands unless we can sell or loan out some of the squad. That some of these players might not be up to the standard that we´d all like them to be can´t be dumped into Wengers lap.

We need a squad, and Wenger would be in for plenty of criticism if we didn´t have any depth, but how can we expect Wenger to shoulder the responsibility if the board has a policy like they have?
We sold first last summer not because we needed money to buy players, but because those sales freed up salary money.

I believe the clubs policy would apeal to the Government its called trying to live within your means.
