Arsenal were suffocated and pinned down by the yellow and black German pressing machine last night, and there was simply no escaping it for Arsene Wenger's players. Almost like a cat pinning down the tail of a helpless mouse, the outcome was inevitable.

Last season we managed to keep a clean sheet a nick the game 1-0. On that day we had defended in numbers behind the ball and looked to break so the game was less about the Germans trying to disrupt us and more about them trying to break us down. This time we tried to take them on and impose our game on them which just simply did not happen enough during the 90 minutes.

It is disappointing because I felt we had found our game against Manchester City and the hope was that we could improve upon that game on game but instead we plummeted back to earth with a thud.

Our players were poor under pressure last niight and we found it difficult stringing a few passes together. Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta and Mesut Özil just could not influence the game. Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez attempted to force the issue but kept running into a sea of hungry Dortmund players.

Ciro Immobile's goal was poor from an Arsenal perspective. How he was able to run unchallenged from the half way line is beyond me. There was no protection in front of a defence that was back peddling from so far back. Immobile may have been fortunate to have the ball bounce into his path after a lucky break just inside the penalty area but his finish was assured. That goal came just before half time, a bad time to concede such a cheap goal.

Just after half time it was two and game over. Aubameyang latched onto a pass, rounded Szczesny and finished. Moments earlier I tweeted that we needed to keep the second half tight as Dortmund would not be able to sustain such intensity but that second goal killed our hopes of getting back into the game.

When we signed Danny Welbeck I read up on a number of opinions from Manchester United fans and so many had said the exact same thing. Hard working, great team player, moves very well, good technique but his finishing lets him down. That was exactly what I saw from Welbeck last night.

Three good chances and he failed to take them. If you want to get something from a game in which you deserve nothing then you have to take any chances that fall your way. At 0-0 Ramsey had slipped him into the same area in which he hit the post on the weekend but this time he side footed wide. He failed to connect to a cross and miskicked the ball. He had also misjudged a low cross into the near post. His final attempt was after a wonderful bit of skill, rolling his marker and side footing over the bar rather than low into the corner as he did with England.

Jack Wilshere got injured during the game which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone at this stage. We are picking up an injury a game at the moment and that is rather ridiculous.

Credit to Dortmund on the night who were hungrier and miles better than us, we have to pick ourselves up and do much better at Villa park. We have plenty of improving to do defensively.
