I have just read that Kolo Toure has completed his move to Man City for a fee around between 15 million pounds. This is coming just a week after Adebayor left for the same club, making them worthy contenders at least for forth place finish at the end of the 2009/10 season. I am not upset by anyone leaving. In fact, if Fabregas were to leave today, I would not lose sleep over it( as long as we get good money for him and find a worthy replacement)!
My anger at Wenger is his penchant for selling quality and buying substandard to replace them. Ade was supposed to be Henry's replacement, right? Great was he? Now we know Vermaelen was the replacement for Toure all the while! How can anyone sell Toure and keep Silvestre? How can we lose Hleb, Flamini, Diarra and Gilberto and Wenger believes the the young players 'will step up and fill the void'?What 'great' replacements Denilson, Song, Diaby and even Nasri have been!
Now we have to put up with the rhetorics of other younger players will fill the void. Bendtner will replace Ade and Vermaelen, Toure. After the CL and FA cup collapse of last season, I am suprised we have not dealt with the problematic DM position. I can bet that Wenger cannot be right and the rest of the world wrong. The stubborn decision to keep on relying on lower quality to fill in for more experienced and better players who leave has been our bane and will continue to be the open secret behind our trophyless run. I am prepared to ENDURE another shambolic display from a 'growing' team of average and untested players but it will be the last!
I am shocked that a coach of Wenger's standing will sell any of his strongest players without having an able replacement in place. And when we do, we search for the poor man's version of the departing player, talk up his averageness and 'sell' his good points to all.Half way through the season when the team is under pressure and the so called 'quality' signing isnt performing, we see on TV, a confused and shattered Wenger wringing his hands in frustration(You may want to watch out for these hand wringing sessions in the new season...lol).
But no sooner has the match ended, the old fox has recovered and he is offering us trite for sure, singing along about how the team lacked'depth today', lacked penetration tomorrow, and at the end of the season, our replacements have made a few improvements so why should the coach buy experienced players to 'block' the development of the younger players? This is the process of Arsenal'sgradual descent into the abyss of mediocrity that we see today!
So we head into our 'decisive season' (according to Wenger and Gazidis) and we are yet without a credible DM, no replacements for our main striker and the last of our Invincibles defender and it doesnt look like they are due for replacements anytime soon. By the way, great attempt by Wenger, for at least targetting Melo even if the effort looked half-hearted.Why? Do we remember how Ramsey and other players said that what made them come to Arsenal was that the coach came himself to see them?If Wenger wanted Melo he could have done better considering how sensitive his addition would ahve been.
I love Arsenal but I am not very happy with the traditional low quality replacement for our departing stars. And though the next season looks as if we may finally turn the corner, let us not forget that we all felt the same way before the start of last season. Has anything changed?
