A healthy dose of competitiveness can only be healthy for a team, and such is the case in certain positions in our team. sometimes the first choice is evident in a certain role. such is the case of Fabregas, van Persie, and Arshavin, who need to be in the squad for us to present the best lineup possible. from what i saw from today's Birmingham game, Rosicky and song are earning that privilege as well. those areas are all covered, and many alternative players could be used in case of an injury. Diaby played very well i might add, scored a goal and made some remarkable tackles.
in central defence, however, the situation is different. The options we have are limited, specially since Djourou got injured. Senderos and Silvestre are noticeably inferior to both Vermaelen and Gallas. they probably would lack of confidence if they ever came in.In certain positions, at least to me, the difference in quality between first and second choice is a bit blurry. such is the case of Clichy in left back. he is fast, likes to contribute in attack, but so does Gibbs. Clichy is very error prone, and has not had a great game so far this season. with the return of Traore from loan, i wonder if selling Gael to Madrid for 17 million euro would affect us too much. playing his best i believe Clichy is the better option, but not by far, and Gibbs is younger. Traore has impressed me in the past, i like him very much and it would be a shame to let him go.
The position i have the most trouble with, is the goalkeeper.Mannone is third choice, and apart from a couple mistakes has been massive on occasion. against Fulham, i could bet Almunia would have let past a couple goals at least. our fourth choice keeper has been very impressive as well. Almunia is of course more experienced but he didn't have a single clean sheet at the beginning of the season, and the players don't seem to respond as well to him as to Mannone. (by the way don Vito brought a smile to my face when he cleared a pass that was a certain goal from Birmingham)
another player in particular i'm having a bit of trouble with is Eboue, i think as a right back he is much better offensively than Sagna, and just as good defensively. also playing in right half i would rather have him as first choice rather than Walcott, but it's close. for now at least. he is consistently delivering and has improved remarkably from last year. he is more of a squad player but his performances so far should guarantee him a spot in the starting eleven.
i'd like to know what you guys think.
