Arsenal have signed a lot of French players since Arsene Wenger joined the club. Many of the best players the club has signed in that time are French Henry, Pires, Vieira*, Petit and Sagna being the top ones. The positions that need to be strengthened now are centre back, left back, centre midfield, left wing and up front according to most fans and critics. Arsene Wenger is a very respected and trusted man in France, he enjoys good relations with most clubs in France and many of the national teams senior players. Is it time to use those connections again?
At centre back we need a physically dominating centre back many have linked us with Mahamadou Sahko who is by all accounts a beast, he would cost a lot but at 20 has a long and trophy laden future in football. Surely A man of Wenger's standing could negotiate the fee to under the 20m asking price. Clichy may be leaving and that may or may not be a bad thing at 26 he is still making the same mistakes he did 5 years ago and his final ball isn't improving. Gibbs looks like the heir to Ashley Cole's Arsenal and England throne but needs more experience. France's current left back Eric Abidal is hugely experienced only has a couple of good years left and is a world class defender. Why would he leave Barca? they have shown an interest in Clichy before, and a player swap + 5m sounds good for Clichy.Abidal is ageing and wouldn't stand in the way of Gibbs when he is ready to step up.
"No cover for Song in midfield and a general lack of height and strength in the side" not a direct quote but sums up the feeling of many.Alou Diarra, much improved since his Liverpool days(if they even count) he is 6'3 and tends to dominate any midfield, captain of the very successful Bordeux team of the last 3 years and captain of France since Blanc took over 29 and has experience in a few different leagues around Europe. A buy-out clause of 7.75m euro roughly £6m would be worth it. Another option for this position is Mahamadou Diarra formerly of Real Madrid now at Monaco at little more experienced and technically better but a year older and far more injury prone, could be available on a free considering Monaco's relegation. M Diarra is a Mali international but may or may not be retired from international football. Both Diarras are born leaders who captain club and country.
Every football fan wants a superstar signing for their team not sure if Arsenal really need one but hey there's a couple of French ones we could sign. Left wing could be pretty bare if (hopefully)Arshavin and (hopefully not) Nasri depart. A player we were outbided for not too long ago Frank Ribery had a pretty poor season at Bayern after lets just say personal problems. a couple of years ago he was arguably the best player in Europe as Bayern made it to the Champions league final. He would cost a fortune but is perfectly suited to the premier league.
A well rumoured signing is Real Madrid's Karim Benzema, I really like Benzema and see him as a replacement of Thierry Henry not just in goals but style he drifts to the left wing often to pick up the ball has a great turn of pace and brilliant first touch also a clinical finisher and a threat in the air. Many Arsenal fans would love to see an imitation of the Henry Bergkamp front line that brought us so much success.
Now I'm sure a few Arsenal fans might not like us signing half the French team but 2 of these players coming in would be a great summer of business for Arsenal.I'd like to see Sakho and A Diarra coming in to add to the squad we have hopefully Nasri and Clichy stay(and improve in Clichy's case). If we spent 16m on Sakho and 6m on Diarra while recouping 20m for the sales of Bendtner, Denilson, Rosicky and Arshavin we could still afford Falcao :p
Mean Lean's Response
I always find it a dangerous game to list a collection of players who could do a job for Arsenal because Arsenal go through such a thorough process before making a move for players, mainly first team players. This is probably the reason why we do not tend to waste as much money as the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham have done in recent times.
I know that many players are scouted around the world and our scouts watch these players for a long period of time before a dossier of the player is compiled and then given to the manager to make his decision.
I get the feeling that we do not often deviate away from our targets and when Arsene has let a transfer window go by without a signing, his version of not finding better than what we have could be closer to 'not being able to purchase one of his targets passed on from our scouts' instead of any player in the world.
You make a good point about Alex Song and his lack of cover. With the likely departure of Denilson away from the club you would expect that one of Wenger's top priorities will be a defensive midfielder to supplement at least two quality youngsters we have in Frimpong and Coquelin. Both players showing great promise but I do not see Wenger seeing them as the next best option in such an important season especially with Alex Song going away in January for the ACN. Who that player should be is anyone's guess but I would like to see a player with the right character come into that area. Technically good, mentally strong and a fighter. In fact, I want those attributes to be part of any player that comes to Arsenal this summer.
As for the rest, it is almost impossible to say. Because a) we do not know exactly who will be leaving the club and b) how those departures will impact the restructuring of the system and approach.
If I were to hazard a guess then I would say that we will see new faces in almost every area of the squad. Perhaps not a goalkeeper, unless Vito Mannone leaves the club. If Squillaci is moved on, (which is not really the norm in a first season at Arsenal) then perhaps Arsene will be after another center back. An attacking wide player who can play centrally would be advantageous, especially if Bendtner is moved on.
It is hard for us fans to know which players will be suitable because we often do not know the characters, attitudes, wage demands, price tags, current happiness etc of these players.
What is for certain is that, it will be a very busy summer ahead.

we'd like to think it may be a busy summer with tranfer targets coming in,but allthe signs at pres are pretty ominous.assuming he (wenger)has 4/5 wkks before pre-season,where are they? you would think 1or two would have been sown up already, would you not.the sad thing is the man has only got one more year left.tha's the reality-if he does not deliver this coming season no one,i mean no one wil save his bacon.

It seems as if many people are getting rather jumpy about our 'lack of signings' so far but what people have to think about is that transfers are complicated procedures that take time. Most players are currently on holiday. Early June is usually about negotiations with clubs and agents. The rest will come.
Compare with 99% of other clubs and you'll see that hardly any movement is curently taking place.
Patience.

As much as I want us to sign players.. we will at best sign a second rate striker and poss Emir Sphahic an average cb from Montpellier...
we badly need reinforcements... but as in prev seasons the new players wont be the standard of those leaving...
Cesc will go and will be replaced by someone young with potential...
Wenger will be quoted as saying having the Verm back is "like a new signing"...
And will say how we dont need CM as Ramsay back...........
and wont buy a gk as wont wanna hinder Chesney and Flapi's progress....

You mentioned Sakho, I watched him the other night alongside Kaboul for France.......they won 4-1 and Kaboul was absolutely dominant, Sakho seemed in awe of him....and I swear Kaboul doesnt even play centre back for Spurs.
I t isnt 1998 anymore, footbaqll has evolved and so has the french league, we cant sign players because they are french, we must sign players who are bigger, stronger and generally more powerful.
I know people with limited football knowledge would crucify me but I feel Drogba for 2 seasons would be great, he is physically in better shape than most 20 year olds, add to that Samba who is big and dominant and surprisingly quick, I would then go and sign Jack Rodwell, once again big and with a massive future, Everton have no money, go and offer for him before Man Utd do.
Ins- Drogba, Samba, Rodwell- Spine of the team and all physical

That is only based on your fear. We do not know what the managers plans are.

If Wenger does what he did last season getting bargains I fear for the gunners. If Wenger were to leave/resign,it would set the gunners back by at least two years. That is the time taken to restart the gunners as a team challenging for honours.
I believe time is running out for Wenger to turn things round. There is no guarantee assuming he goes for quality players the gunners would finish first/secod/third or fourth.New players take time to integrate into the team. Pirez took one year to get to grips with the epl.

What big clubs exactly have signed any players Madrid confirmed they will sign a couple when the transfer window actually opens on July1 apart from that a few bosmans in Italy.Arsenal don't talk about transfers until they are a done deal which I agree with just look what happened with ManU and De Gea. The 1 transfer we have heard about is Ricardo Alvarez which basically means he is as good as on his way

If you looked at things logically and not just based entirely on newspapers you would know Cesc isn't leaving as Barca simply cant afford him and to be honest I'd say he is a bit hurt by their refusal to bid more than 30m for him they don't want him that badly and I think he has realized that. At centre back I think we need a new fourth choice to replace Squillaci and that Djouruo-Vermaelen should be first choice. Centre midfield depends on how Coquelin and Frimpong perform pre season. And Fabianski proved he currently has what it takes to be no1 at a trophy winning side

I don't want us to sign all these players they were just examples of positions we are told we must improve who happened to be linked by their national team. You don't really get bigger stronger and generally more powerful than Sakho, he is huge. No its not 1998 which means 4-4-2 is dead among other things. Are you really going to judge a 20yr old on 1 game?I have watched Sakho repeatedly and he is an outstanding centre back who I think we should sign and use mainly as back-up and against the likes of Stoke

Drogba would be an amazing signing for us, totally agree, he's got 3 top years left in him and would probably deliver us the title with a couple more like him in the spine of our team. IF only!

We better get some decent buys in before the CL qualifier or we could do an Everton

Part of my reason for doing this list of players was to show that even if we do sign top class players in every position the media want us to they wont be happy unless its the players they have picked i.e Samba or Cahill, Baines, Parker, Hazard and Falcao. These aren't the players I want but if we signed any 2 of them I wouldn't be complaining, actually either Diarra in midfield would suit Arsenal very well and better than Parker who despite his qualities doesn't really suit our game and there are better options available than him. The right player at left midfield will improve Clichy, a decent back up in defense and possibly a defensive minded centre midfielder I might do a list of players for the media positions who I think would be the best options

Having read some of the comments I have a feeling that some of these comments are exactly right, Wenger will say that having "the Verminator" back is like a new signing as well as Ramsey, because he thinks we are good enough to mix it with the best, but how wrong is he. The likes of Bendtner, Eboue, Denilson, Rosicky, Almunia and dare i say it there have been times when even Fabregas looks as if he wished he wasn't in the team anymore. So now we have Nasri wanting to go to United well I say sell all the dead beats, get as much as we can for Fabregas and let Nasri go if these two players think the grass is greener on the other side, but don;t sell Nasri to United.
-
07-Jun-2011 12:26 | | mohd ismail - nasri
With Nasri's future unresolved and the likelihood of him being sold, and Feb looking to jump ship,Arsenal will lose 70% of the mid field. This is a really scary scenario.
Maybe Wenger can pull a rabbit from his magic cap. I know no one is indispensable but Wenger is not ferguson. The red faced lost Ronaldo and Tevez but stll rebounded back with a vengeance.
Can Wenger do the likewise. I am keeping my finger crossed.

07-Jun-2011 12:42 | | DaygeeDr - ma usual rants
Think I agree with U ML, just a comment today.. I've supported Arsenal for years now, and I just like it when everybody says "this summer is gonna be a busy one" and Wenger comes up with the usual one signing of the summer, then the whole world writes us off, then we surprise them all in the first half of the season, then crumble in the 2nd half.. I expect the same this summer and first half of the season, except we doing better in the 2nd half and winning the league... And one more thing, Wenger is not a Rookie- we can't see AA,NB, Denilson, Clichy, Nasri, Fab, Rosciky- all leave in one summer, never gonna happen- for that reason alone ayam all the more positive. #teampositivegooner.. @DaygeeDr

Just read Blacburn 's Jones is probably going to OT. Arsenal have just got Jenkinson,a youth product.Jones is on paper probably going to make a better impact than the new gunner player. That's why when the tw closes, don't be surprised at only players without epl experience going to Arsenal.
Wenger has to show he means bussiness by getting the epl guys.If not ,expect another season dominated by the red faced. Then gunners will ask when will the trophyless run end and be second best to the red faced or Chelsea.
In fact I am beginning to doubt whether Wenger is able to shake off the shadow ot the red faced cunt. If not, someone will have to get the gunners challenging again.
