We have like 100 million pounds. Why don't we buy Messi?

This is my first entry here so if it's overly long or anything, I apologise.
Well well well, I'm sure you, like I and everyone else, has an opinion whether it be positive or negative, on anything to do with Arsenal at this moment. We're fans, it's what we do, openly debate anything, from signings to tactics, even to how the club is ran and how you'd spend the finances. This is all well and good, with Twitter being the medium, everyone has an opinion now. But since when did it become okay to assume your opinion was a fact that you had to ram down peoples throats? Or in this case, onto peoples timelines?
I've always been an advocate of the saying "If you have nothing positive to say, don't say anything at all." It stands true to this day. Many people don't know the difference between critisising your club and being a straight up moron. I openly admit, I do critisise Arsenal, some of the stuff I don't agree with, but I still support them, I was raised this way and I wouldn't change it for anyone else. But when I see people calling for Wengers head, the very man who put us into Europes elite competition for 14 years straight when we only made 2 appearances before him, it really angers me. Everyone thinks they know how to run Arsenal simply cos they do it on Football Manager 2011, but reality check, it just doesn't happen like that. With the internal challenges presented to Arsene Wenger, he's achieved success in them restraints and done it brilliantly. The fact we still have European football with the very best with such limited funds and wage structure is a testiment to just how clever the man is.
I recall a Twitter poll once done by YankeeGunner, it was asking how old people were and their opinion on Arsenal as of now. The general concensus was that older folks were frustrated, they were bewildered but never once questioned their loyalty to Arsenal FC. It was infact the younger generation, the 14-24 year olds that were crying for the £35m signing, the ones crying for a new manager, the ones wanting us to be Barcelona. It made me realise, these fans who were crying for them things don't have a slightest clue about Arsenal before Arsene Wenger. I'm gonna throw an assumption, these young fans likely had vague interest in football, saw Arsenal during Invincibles and thought, "Hold on, this team is actually amazing, I will support them." And with that mentality, expected Arsenal to pull that off every year. Well let me put it into check for you, no other team in modern Football has managed that, not even remotely close, and not even going a whole season unbeaten, yes, even the mighty Barcelona lost twice last season. And because it's relevant, the Arsenal Ladies went 108 games unbeaten, including a 51 game winning streak, but of course, you wouldn't know that they're a pillar of Arsenal FC now would you?
Today was meant to be a good day, Arsenal stole a march on Lille (Of all teams) for Park Chu Young, just got him to travel to London instead of Lilles ground for his medical. It was a good sign and progress we were making in the market. But NO. He wasn't well known enough for you Gloomers, he wasn't a big enough name, the fee wasn't big enough! To give you some stats then, he is the South Korea Captain, so a big name in Korea. His fee is £3m+£2m due to Monaco's relegation, guarantee his quality would call for £10m minimum on open market and with a top tier team. He scored 12 goals last term with a relegated team, to put that stat into context, Eden Hazard, the much demanded £35m man, scored just 7, yes, SEVEN goals last season. Their ability and quality is uncomparable yes of course, but Hazard has a strong unit of players around him and he managed just 7, no disrespect to Monaco but their team was fairly weak and Park still managed 12 goals, still doubting his quality?
This afternoon, we play Manchester United, the in-form team with a blend of youth and experience, something we've tried for years! But our team is depleted, I'm anticipating a loss because Man United destroyed Tottenham Hotspur in their 3-0 win whilst we merried along until the first fluke goal against Liverpool. But even if we lose, it's no reason to boo. It's no reason to be negative, we don't even have a first team recognised defensive midfielder for a start, so another youngster is due a debut (Francis Coquelin). But if we win, I guarantee someone will find negativity in it, why would you?! "Oh it was a narrow win", "It was luck," and "It wasn't a good performance." If we win and I hear them, I really will go ape crap on people. Why would you nitpick at faults if we won against reigning champions with our thinnest squad to date? Why can't you just bask in the glory of a win and just accept it for what it is, a victory against a very strong side?
There's being critical then there's being purely negative for the sake of it. Positivity is the key to supporting them through tough times right now, if you don't believe in the players, how are they supposed to believe in themselves? Being negative won't solve anything and will only cloud your judgement on anything Arsenal do, whether it be something good or bad. Open up your eyes, clear your mind, and realise we're all fighting for the same cause, all wanting the best possible result for Arsenal FC. Booing the players will only drive them out, we now have a squad of players who want to wear the cannon on their chest, they feel pride everytime they pull on that shirt and walk down that tunnel, don't take that pride from them and belittling them by being an idiot. The players need you now the most, so stand up, cheer for the greatest team the world has ever seen and just support your club.

Mean Lean's Response
Great passionate article thank you, and make sure it is not your last.
I am all for differing views and supporters criticising the club, manager and certain players. We all do it to different degree's but it really feels more than that for some. It almost feels as if certain people have dropped actually supporting the club for venom at every available opportunity. I find that very strange indeed.
You can see patterns in certain fans behaviour on this blog, other blogs and Twitter. Some only post when we lose and suddenly disappear when we have performed well and come away with three points.
In the George Graham days support seemed very different than it does today. We sat at Highbury through some god awful matches with Martin Keown in midfield whacking balls into the channels and pumping balls long to the head of Alan Smith or Kevin Campbell.
A 0-0 draw at home to Aston Villa was the worst 'game' of football that I had ever seen. This was when Graham reverted away from the attacking football that had served him so well and he began to kill the life out of attacking football. Yet, I do not remember a sense of anger that Graham should be sacked and manager x could do a better job. Obviously there has always been a bit of that at every ground at pretty much any time. But on the whole, supporting a club was just that, supporting the club you love. It was about the experience of going to the ground with your mates or listening to the radio praying that Ian Wright could snatch a late winner. It was about the hope that your team would do better than the last. It was just part of life and not a chance to prove you know more than the manager of your club.
I think society has changed, and with that supporters have changed. While we all want the same goal which is winning and ultimately trophies, a sense of entitlement has crept in amongst fans. Not just Arsenal but at many clubs. We all know more than the management, we all think we know the full story in every situation.
I do not have an issue with differing opinions but I do have an issue when the negativity starts to get passed onto the team thus jeopardising our chances of getting results and the possibility of losing more of our best players.
I am just going to continue doing what I have always done and that is support this great club because it is just that. A great club with great traditions. I supported them when we were in midtable under Graham so I will certainly support this young team who haven't dropped below fourth since Arsene Wenger took over in 1996. It is not about ambition as you can only have ambition if you have power to change anything. It is about support.

28-Aug-2011 12:08 | | Johnny Tran - You make a good point
I just have to wonder why we are not showing more ambition. I mean, 3 million for this Chinese guy? Why didn't we pay 15 or 20 million for him as a statement of intent. I think Wenger missed a real opportunity to send a message that we aren't afraid to spend money.
We have like 100 million pounds. Why don't we buy Messi?

Thanks. I liked the word Gloomers.
And Johnny Tran was funny too, if I understood it correctly as sarcasm.

28-Aug-2011 12:23 | | HmmGunner - what???
I'm hoping you're joking? You cannot seriously be suggesting blowing £10M more than we need to for a player just to scare our rivals (cos yeh, City and Chelsea are gonna be terrified of that). Also, Barca would never sell Messi for £100M, and we need more depth anyway. If we blew all our money on one player, we would become a one man team.

28-Aug-2011 12:34 | | highburyleg - Serious ?
you are tring to compair park to hazard,
if park was so good last season why did nobody but lille want to snap him till 2 days before the window. And because they went down has no bearing on his price if he was a top class player..
You talk about others having no clue have you ever watched football outside of england ?
Hazard is one of the best young players around and just 20 years old he plays as a winger and is wanted by the top clubs in europe park is none of these and the club have banked 60 million.
Why is the squad so thin o'year we have signed 0 midfielders and 0 defenders. but plenty of wingers ffs.

Very good article. Good to know there are people like you still surporting our club. I've counted myself, you and mean lean. Are there any others?

And by supporting the club you mean having to pay from £42 to £96 for the chance to watch swansea at home.

28-Aug-2011 13:25 | | Kipmonster - Sanctimonious Jerk
Another sanctimonious superiority complex ' you are no fan if you have temerity to boo ' jerk. Fans are entitled to show displeasure at the END of games & Boo . If players are sooo lily livered & can't take it then best they fuck off & are replaced by those who can Man Up & accept due criticism.
The club themselves raised the bar of expectation with move to Emirates. Back in 2004 Keith Edelman said the move would enable us to compete in top end of transfer market. NO fan has demanded Real Madrid / Man City style spending spree but top players being sold & NO marquee signing whilst STILL no experienced top class defensive signings is unacceptable when the club acts like Harrods when charging fans but shops at Lidl.

All good things must come to an end. Arsenal with a depleted squad are lowly underdosg. Nothing will give as much aststisfaction by beating the red faced. It's about time he loses. He thinks he has a divdine right to win games and trophies.
I hope the gunners put on a commanding defensive show and neutralize the ugly bull dog .It can be done. If some lowly teams can do it,why can't Arsenal.Get two gunners on every rd who has the ball and hit on the break with a fast counter repeat fast counter.
That will slowdown the red faced for a while and not make him think the epl is his private domain.
Btw I have looked thru the stats and indeed his record is impressive. ten cosecutive wins. By the law of averages he is due a defeat, not draw despite the gunners woeful record.

28-Aug-2011 13:51 | | Dan - Expectations
Keep the faith Gooners. There were some terrible games under Graham, but with our back five and Wrighty stealing the odd vital goal for us we still won some trophies. I think most of highbury nodded off during the 1993-94 home league matches : ) Remember thinking back then if only we had a couple of class midfielders to complement the strengths we already had, that we'd be unbeatable, then Wenger comes in, buys Viera and his amazing debut against Sheffield Wednesday, it was like a moment where everything fitted together at last.
I don't mind not winning a trophy for a while, but be great to see them lower the prices then... or bring in what we need to complete this team. I can see the directors now though, looking at that balance sheet, thinking, damn! that's a shit load of money we got there... hmm lets see how we can appease the fans without spending much of it! I would love the club to buy a big big star. To lift everyone. My choices would be Drogba, Kaka, Hazard. We all know the club really needs it, but we no longer take financial risks (ala Bergkamp), and winning trophies is simply is not a priority for the manager and the current board. We got the stadium. We got the money, we got the great support. The club created that big demanding beast. What we don't have is the genuine ambition to match the new expectations.
Win or lose tho, we all love the Arsenal, we must keep believing in Wenger until the day he leaves, even if we're not majorly competitive, because as the post here says, we're still fans, we still love going to the games and soaking up the atmosphere, we still hope that we're gonna spank the opposition. One day it'll all come good, and let's not be ashamed that when it wasn't, we all whinged like bitches. Come on Arsenal.

Why are Arsenal always decimated by injuries not only this season but in previous seasons?Wenger has alot to answer to this.If the gunners are routed, believe me it's time for him to get the quality players and not some sensational kids.
If he refuses,sack him.
-
28-Aug-2011 15:43 | | Mohd
Can you believe it?RVP misses apenalty and the red face dcunt has gone 2-0 .Wenger doesn't know or doesn't want to play defnsive soccer. His one style attack is a god send for MU,Chelsea, and others.
Beside his high defensive line give opposition strikers time and space.
This FM says keep the faith. I have switched off my tv because I aint going to be surprised the gunners lose 5-0.His dithering is causin g the gunners to lose ground. By the time he gets the quality as opposed to sensational kids,it will be too late.As for the cl,forget about winning it unless there is an injection of several wc players. I believe the gunners can scrape for fourth place. It's really pathetic. The ES was funded for the gunners to challenge. Thanks to the Fm" s blindfaith in kid after kid with no end in sight,Arsenal will be better off without him.
Now it's 3-0.
I won't be surprised it ends in 9-0. thanks to Wenger's hdl
-
28-Aug-2011 17:18 | | Mohd
So I did the right thing by switching off the tv when it was 3-0.What has Wenger got to say?More kids I suppose. His philosophy aint working the last four years and this 8-2 beating is unprecedented in modern soccer. This manager has been given more than enough time to right things but has refused.
I wonder when the board will take action to sack him :only when l the guuners are relegated. In truth all this could have been avoided if he had taken action to get the quality players.Forget about winning the epl and cl .The qualification for cl is papering over the major flaws in the team:be it in defence,md or attack.Yes the team was greatly weakened but it doesn't diminish Wenger's responsibility.
The tw closes on Wed. If nobody comes in,then it is as sure as the sun rises, the gunners could be consigend to mid table stature and it would take ten years to get back to the current top four status.
I believe Wenger has taken the gunners as far as he can. The in Arsene we trust brigade can dream on the next ten years. If no action is taken by him with regard to
player imports and quality ones not sensational kids who will develop in ten years time,he should resign. Enough of his pass to tomorrow style.

28-Aug-2011 20:13 | | Thomas bjorlie - You idiot

There's a reason that all the big clubs want hazard but no-one will buy him... BECAUSE THEY WON'T SELL HIM! And don't criticize AW for the players he buys HE'S smarter than you! Just because there's no-one on the market and eight of his starters were inelligible for the games doesn't me we need to panic! By winter brake arsenal will be the best team in the epl... Just pray they haven't lost all there games by that time... You must understand that if any other team ever had there captain and runner-up captain leave to rival clubs and have as many key injuries and suspensions they would suck
