Where to start? Arsenal football club, a club with amazing tradition and history and a club that plays football the way it should be played. That said, what persists in my head is the thought that our club embraces the new motto “Foward”, have we really?

I remember the years of Highbury, with a burning hot Thierry Henry, a driven Patrick Viera and a hearty Tony Adams, not to forget to mention the others. My point? At that point in time, winning trophies and reaching finals were to the Gooner a norm, every game at the Highbury was expected to be won not only by the fans but by the players too, but as time progressed, we notice we are in a time where we aren’t able to finish off the most average of teams, even at home, we are in a time where the club is satisfied with achieving 4th place and qualifying to play in Europe. Let me point out that never finishing below 4th place in all those years is a remarkable feat, but we are Arsenal Football Club, and in reality we should be aiming higher. Standards have not only dropped in terms of our ambition, but the quality and depth of our team as well.

I start by reviewing the team, and understandably different people have different views but here I go. In goal we have W.Szczesny, whom I’m a very big fan of but what concerns me is our back up keepers, Fabianski and Mannone who haven’t been all that convincing. Defence I’m proud to say if we field our first line of Santos Vermaelen Koscielny Sagna, it looks and sounds pretty solid to me, with Gibbs,Mertasacker, Djourou and Jenkinson for back up, our defence looks decent to me.

Now, I would say our strongest midfield would be Song,Arteta and Wilshere, it’s a decent midfield but would I expect that midfield to take control against bigger opposition? Not so sure. For backup/rotation we have Coquelin,Diaby,Rosicky and Ramsey, the problem is apart from Rosicky in my view, the others just...Average. Coquelin looks to be a promising young talent, but isn’t at the level we require just yet, Ramsey has been poor in my view, looks like he hasn’t recovered from that horrible injury he suffered, and we at the moment can’t afford to play him over Rosicky. Diaby is just, well injury plagued. What worries me more is the fact that being a team that plays through the middle, we haven’t really got a playmaker in the middle or a “Cesc Fabregas” in other words. Out of our CM’s, Alex Song has the most assists and he is our DM, that in itself speaks volumes, also too RVP has created the most chances in our team and he’s our main striker, what’s going on! Another factor which I believe is crucial is we lack that burst from midfield, that surging run, we lack that now and we make up for it with that boring, slow and predictable side to side passing, before we had Nasri, Fabregas and Wilshere who could all do so, now we have?

Up top, I really think we should play the three of Gervinho,Rvp,AOC. Simple. Walcott isn’t a player who should play for Arsenal, he can’t cross, dribble, pass, header, control, take on his man and finish with composure. Andrei Arshavin is a player I really like but unfortunately we can’t afford to keep on to a player who produces such performances week in week out, we need consistency. Chamakh and Park quite simply need to be sold. Up front is the weakest part of our squad which needs fixing urgently, if RVP suffers an injury (God forbid) then we are in trouble.

This summer is crucial for us to show we want to move “Forward”, Emmanuel Petit mentioned of Arsenal needing to sign five or six players, I agree but also feel we need to offload that much as well, Chamakh,Park,Squillaci,Walcott,Denilson,Bendtner,Vela all need to go and that would free up some cash to invest in new players, I also would add Ramsey to that list, to me it seems as though he’s suffering the same problem as Eduardo, just can’t recover from that injury. If we want to move “Forward”, we need a very productive summer in which we act fast this time, and not on deadline day. There are players out there for us to buy, we just need to act fast and do whatever we can to get them, Hazard for example knows Vermaelen from the Belgium national team, same with Podolski, he knows Mertasacker from the German national team. I have faith in Wenger, and am sure he will do us all right this summer.

No matter what anyone thinks, we DO have the right manager in charge, and he WILL get us out of this mess.

Keep the faith.

Mean Lean's Response

I think what is clear is that Arsene has yet to reshape this new Arsenal squad. He wanted players in the summer but for whatever reason he was not able to obtain those players.

It has hurt Arsene Wenger that his previous team was not able to win trophies and it doesn't always take one transfer window to get the exact team that you want. Hence loan signings like Yossi Benayoun and a low price purchase like Park.

Tomas Rosicky and Andrey Arshavin are heading towards the end of their Arsenal careers due to age or form so I expect the squad to keep evolving or as you put it, keep moving forward.

We have several players on loan like Bendtner that will more than likely be moved on. We have out of favour players like Squillaci and Almunia who will move on so as long as Robin van Persie stays with the club then I will enjoy the rebuilding of this squad as long as Arsene is given the money he needs to strengthen. If there is one thing in Wenger I trust to get right more often than not is the eye for a good player in the transfer market.

I must say, I am very surprised by this wave of criticism on the shoulders of Aaron Ramsey. The waves of negativity are increasing and getting larger and that is a real shame.

This is his first full season as an Arsenal player, he is still only 21 years of age and talk of selling him because he is not yet at the level we wish is hugely premature. He has all the tools needed to become a top player, what he is having problems doing is putting all those tools together consistently.

I am more than convinced that by 23-24 Ramsey will be hitting the back of the net regularly and dominating midfields up and down the country and in fact out of the country for Wales. He is the captain of Wales at 21 and you don't captain your country if you do not have something about you.

I am sure he will change many an opinion and it won't be long. He gives everything for the club, every time he steps onto the pitch and isn't the cliche that if a player gives everything then he will be fully supported? He has been abused by Arsenal fans and mocked (not by yourself I want to add) and I find it beyond sad.

Personally I wanted to see a quality creative player come in over the summer to play in that role and I think judging from reports, that was the position that Arsene tried to fill with late bids for Mario Götze and Eden Hazard according to the German and French press at the time.

I hope that powder 'was kept dry' for a reason and the strengthening of this squad will improve dramatically this summer.

    I thought for a moment I was reading a blog from 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011 then.

Wenger has had his changes to fix the trouble we are in, but he just wont. Its time that with some attitude steps in. Ill go for Moyes any day. Keeping Everton in the middle of the table every year without any money to build with! He has done a fantastic job.

In the middle of dec. Wenger knew that we where out of fullbacks for a long time, but failed to adress the problem. How many points did that cost us? He knew all sommer that Nasri and Fabregas wanted to leave, didnt adress the problem.

Get the man out of our club!

It's funny how fans of one club can see another manager in a different way. So many Everton fans were calling for change when Moyes went from top half to fighting relegation every other season. I bet a vast majority of Everton fans would swap Moyes for Wenger in a heart beat.

Would you expect Moyes to make us compete with City and United on our budget? If so, why do you think that?

Wenger has a far better record in the transfer market than Moyes.

Ali, RvP very recently said he cannot understand the fans' criticism of Walcott. Now I don't know you from a bar of soap, therefore I can only assume that you are not a vastly experienced player or manager. I used to find it amusing that people who have no credentials to speak of, hold such strong opinions. Nowadays it irritates me more than amuse. Mostly because of the ripple effect. Every second idiot starts saying player so and so should not play for Arsenal and next thing you have a player who has lost confidence. You expect loyalty from the players (just look at the reaction to anyone wanting to move) yet you show no loyalty whatsoever. You feel justified to criticise harshly, even insult. I am also seriously concerned about Ramsey and he would do well to leave Arsenal for the sake of his future. He would be grabbed up by every, yes every other club in the EPL incuding City and United. He has the potential to be a captain of this club, yet suddenly a lot of numpties have started picking on him. You do not know what you are doing. For the sake of the Arsenal stop this shit.

Think what you say is pretty much on the ball, my only comment is that I think Ramsey should stay, this season has been hard on him, he was great when accompanied by Fabregas and nasri, the injury certainly has had some effect on him but not insurmountable, he doesn't shy away from challenges or look particularly off the pace, he just needed that feeling of complete confidence in the surrounding players and everyone can see that although atreta and song are quality players they don't have the passing and penetration skills of Fabregas or Nasri, i'd be keen to see what would happen if we had gotze or hazzard or both join in the summer, I think Ramsey would develop and become the kind of busting attacking midfielder he was starting to look like before the injury.
I'm inclined towards Podolski too but wouldn't mind Ba either, think he would be a very good foil for RVP.

What was plain to see at the Milan game was that it takes 3 world class attackers to play the formation Arsenal does. Arsenal had one.

The pace of chambo and walcott is better utilitized in a 4-4-2 where they can terrorize full backs and supply assist to RvP and who ever we can muster un top with him.

Walcott especially can not produce goals. And to put rocky up there is just plain wrong. Neither have the passing ability of the barca equivalents. The only attacking player Arsenal has who looks good in a 4-3-3 is Gervinho.

Miyatchi was used as a winger at Bolton and looked dangerous in that posission. A player which could be a top player for arsenal. And he has the same full back terrorizing speed of walcott. He looked poor for arsenal in a 4-3-3.

With Nasri, Arshavin (in good shape) and Cesc Arsenal had the quality in squad to do a good 4-3-3. They could pass, dribble and finish off attacks, making it hard for defenders to pick em out.

Arsenal are playing decent quality players in posessions they are not comfortable in. And are in desperate need of a quality striker so that RVP is not easilly to mark for defenders.

And yes there are a lot of poor quality plaers in the current squad which should be sold if possible. Squilachi, Djourou, Denilson, Vela, Diaby, Arshavin, Bendtner, Gibbs, Park, Chamak, Almunia, Mannone, Lansbury.

Wenger has a better record than Moyes in the transer market....are you INSANE??????

Wenger HAD a good record. For the past 5 years he has sold great players for sub-par fees and bought crap.

    End of.
  • KnysnaGunner

The "crap" Wenger bought over the past 5 years include Koscielny, Chamberlain, Vermaelen, Ramsey, Arteta, Mertesacker, Santos. Who is really the insane one?

Funny how everyone suddenly wants us to clear out a lot of players, but hardly mentions anyone who played on Wednesday. So all your ranting and raving is about squad players and not regular starters. In reality you do not have any constructive comments to improve the situation, just joining the bandwagon.

I honestly think that a lot of people who comment on Arsenal websites are not real Arsenal fans. There can be no other explanation for the stupidity of the comments.

To begin with arsenal shareholdest.it deosn't make sense when you own a club by name without looking into the problem that going on at the club.what I meant to say is that, where is the money whereby the manager should out there to buy a good talented players which are actually coursing 15 to 25 million.keep the and see your club going down everytime will make you feel better
  • Colesy  - Sorry KnysnaGunner but you're being selective mate
    avatar
What about these players which Wenger bought in since 2007?

Fabianski, Bischoff, Silvestre, Arshavin, Chamakh, Squillaci, Campbell.

Perhaps you can explain the convenience of your post omitting this selection of players?

@kynsnaGunner - you hit the nail on the head by mentioning how stupid some of the comments have been.....

@Frank - moyes is great because he keeps Everton mid-table without spending any money is what you say - right. Well my friend isn't Wenger far far better if we apply your logic - cause he makes the club a healthy profit every season and still keeps us in the top four!!!!!

Coming to more footballing matters which what should be discussed more ideally rather than costs of players and constant chatter about who to ship out and who to bring in during the summer.....cause well the summer is three months away anyways.....I think what we are missing apart from the obvious back-up to RVP up front is some fresh ideas in the mid-field. Arteta, Song and Ramsey have played so many games non-stop that they almost seem to have run out of ideas when it comes to cutting open defences or even giving them a hard time with some really incisive play....Rosicky has appeared fresher in relative terms but he doesn't seem a likely candidate for playing 3 or 4 games on the trot. We really need Wilshere or Diaby back pretty badly......Yes Diaby's name almost always polarizes opinion but I just wish he gets fit and has a run of games for once......How that would be sooooooo ideal for us if it were to happen now....

90 minutes without creating a good chance against a mid table team.

Arsenal has 2 world class players. Sagna and RVP.

The reason people keep complaining about squad players is that wenger wont buy when we have a large squad. Without them leaving there will be no new signings.

We are all Arsenal fans, the reason we critisize so much is that we are fed up after 6 years without ANY trophies.

I have made constructive comments about the way Arsenal play and I think I have been proven right today as the 4-3-3 formation was as ineficcient as ever.

slow, slow, back back, slow. No penetration, no movement up front or in midfield, no players creating space - no wonder the back four keep digging themselves into holes - they've got no-one to pass to. Side to side then back it goes again. Arsenal are playing as if they're convinced they're Barcelona.- trouble is they haven't a quarter of the skill of the Catalans. Too much complaining and arm-waving when decisions don't go their way. Too much victim mentality. Excuses, excuses, excuses - the pitch was too rough, the ref was too lenient, the ball was too round.......In 45 years of supporting Arsenal I can't remember a time when things looked quite so bleak. Spurs then Liverpool - anyone looking forward to the next two weeks?

@KnysnaGunner, doesn't take being a football manger to tell when a player isn't up to the standard required. It's not only my word that Walcott isn't good enough but the words of many AFC fans, and many other people including those involved in football. Alan Hansen claimed he hasn't a "Footballing Brain", and I wouldn't disagree with him and oh guess what that's an ex-pro footballer speaking. What is worrying is that you choose to take only the word of Van persie who of course isn't going to be critical of Walcott publicly. Seriously that doesn't take a numpty figure out.

    Dear Frank....
If you read my comment properly you will find that I mentioned Wilshere and Diaby both in my comment. But typical of the doomers you chose to only point out Diaby's name from my comment. And again if you had read the whole comment properly - I have mentioned clearly that Diaby's name instantly polarises opinion and that is exactly what it has done hasn't it!!!

And by the way if you find my comment 'stupid' then I am sure you find Thierry Henry stupid as well cause he mentioned in his farewell interview before flying off to new york as to how both of those players could re-vitalize the team. Of course there have been other eminent people who(I think it was Laurent Blanc??) have compared Diaby to Zidane no less but then they are all stupid aren't they??? or atleast stupider than David Moyes for sure isn't it??

I just find it slightly sad that a player and a mighty talented one at that who lost out because of a horrible horrible tackle is a laughing matter for the fans of his own club.....Thankfully I ain't one of them and if and when Diaby does come back and play for us - I will be the first one to cheer him on....
  • colesy
